2000 SXR SQUEELING at IDLE!

So once i let the sled warm up it squeels at idle, if I rock the sled back and forth it goes away and comes back. If I pick up the back my track turns and is hard to stop with your feet.

I took everything apart and used a SLP clutch alignment tool to realign everything. (A added note I took the secondary off and there are no washers behind it, just on the outside). when i aligned it, the tool was on and the secondary was pussed all the way in toward air box, and the arm of the tool was touching teh inside sheave of the primary where the belt rides.

Do I need to make my adjustments with the secondary pulled out some?

I checked the 3 bolts with the washers on back of secondary and they seem good???

Also is there an easy way to check center to center without a sled pro

Let me know any alignment tricks or if anyone thinks this is something else?

Your belt its to tight, remove the 3 washer and run it, that should fix it....

Is it a new belt you put in...?

I bet they are.

I had this same issue on my venture when I put a new belt in last year. I took the shims out, and the squeal went away. It is a 10-15 minute job. Pull the belt off the secondary, take the bolt off the secondary, and then simply remove the 3 bolts that have the shims, take the shims out, and reinstall in the reverse order. or something very similar to that;) Keep the shims/ washers as you might need them when the belt gets worn.
 
I am not sure if this is the same tool as I have if it is along with the alignment you have to also make sure that the clutch center to center distance is correct or you will have issues also.
 
Dumb ?.....So what you guys are saying is as the belt wears you need to add the shims. Correct?

I can only assume the sled comes with the shims in the secondary from the factory???

If so, then does the belt that comes with a new sled narrower????
 
are you possitive the primary spring isn't worn out or bent.(for lack of better words) I had the issuw after I had ridden about 5 miles an on thru the day. As you said rocked it and the noise would change or go away. It turns out the spring was worn out putting un even pressure on the clutch face not alowing the clutck to fully dissengage even tho it looked like it had. When you shut the machine off centrifugal force stops allowing the clutch to open up. Just something to try. The only way to know is take the primary spring out and look at it on a flat surface or put a new spring in and try it. I replace mine every 5000 km's whether it needs it or not. Good luck
 
I took out the bolts in the rear of the secondary and they are FLAT.. I guess they are supposed to be round when new. I took of the washers and saved them (ordering new bolts) and will try it out.. I only have 150 miled since I bought it this fall and thought it was wierd that the guy had the crappiest of the 2 belts on the sled.. the nice new one was in the holder :) now I know why!
 
the wierd thing is it is a new belt but it is just about flush with the top of the secondary, definetly NOT above it.. so according to manual all should be good.. but clearly not the case...

Also, quick thanks to TURK for the right or close enough clutch settings on this SXR 700 with benders... put the 89L's and 51/43 in it and it pulls the front end up until 70.

Put a new Pro/X Skid in the back with a 1" hacksaw and 96 picks and I get 0 slip even on ice. I made 2 holes up front so I could perform the Pro/x front torque arm drop and it soaks up everything perfect.. So thanks again!
 
belt

May seem simple, or ridiculous....Did you check the belt part numbers to make sure they are correct for the sled? Experienced a similar problem and found the previous owner put on the wrong belt and the same for the spare.
 
You need an 8DN...I know they made a few diferent ones....I think it was 00 or 01...one is harder or something...DAMAN will know.....I am not sure.

Nicko's right. This is common when you install a new belt. I too just recently checked my clutches (good thing) and then installed a newbelt. Did the same exact thing. Pull the washers, belts a tad to high. Yamaha does sell a thinner than stock washer that will let you adjust it in a smaller increment. I have these and was able to get rid of the squeal with them.
 
BTW, my 600 has been noise for a few rides allready, it seems like I know how to fix the problem, I just have been busy and lazy to get it done....I guess now I will have to pull my secondary and remove those stiking washers.

had the same problem with my 00 sxr 600 after i put the new belt on. i just put the old belt back on. good to know how to fix it tho. since we are on the subject of belts, how often should they be changed?
