I'm looking for part #18, 'Bracket 1'. I ordered a week ago and Yamaha said it's backordered and could be '1 week to a month' before I see the part.

If anyone has this part, I'd like to purchase & pay for 2nd day AIR from UPS/Fedex over USPS shipping.

As for my questions:

Trail riding, I'd like this sled to have a lot of snap to it. The few times I rode it, it felt like you really needed to wind it up to get going...much more than my 97 Mach 1 700 Triple. I know there is a big difference in cc's, but how much would this sled benefit from some clutch modifications?

It looks like it may have the original track. The original owner rode in Vermont & Canada. I installed 96 .875" studs on it in hope of getting a touch more bite for a season or two before I spend $400+ for a new track.
 
I know I have a few. I'll bring one back from my cabin this weekend and shoot you a PM to see if you still need it. The ones I have are from a 95 500 but they should be identical.

I have the whole suspension out of a 96 xt minus a blown rear shock. I am quite a distance from you up by Sault Mich. If you have any ideas let me know and I'll see if I can help

Have you tried any clutching changes? The tech pages have a few setups for "trail aggressive" riding.. I have a set of primary 8AB weights, rivets, and spring for this setup. PM me if you want and I can get you a price.
 
I haven't messed with the clutch at all. The guy I bought the sled gave me a couple different colored clutch springs, but I have no clue where they ended up.
 
Thanks everyone, my brackets actually showed up. So much for being backordered?

Next question, while the brackets were completely busted, I could jump on the back of my suspension and it would travel very far. Now I have the brackets installed, I'm 180lbs...now when I jump on the back, it barely moves? I can get it to travel maybe an inch? Is that right?

Now, my track is EXTREMELY loose. I need to tighten it, I'm looking at the tension bolts in the back and I don't understand how they work? There is nothing to push the rear bogie bar OUT? The bolts can only push the bogie bar inwards? How do I put tension on the track?

if your rear axle is properly installed, along with the adjusters, the adjusters have loops (eye bolts)that go around the axle and as you tighten the nuts on the eye bolts, it pulls the axle back. once you figure that one out, do a search on track alignment, plenty of info on this site, or i will explain it. as for the brackets, you must have something binding in the suspension which would have caused the breakage, and now that they arent broke any more, whatever else is wrong is limiting the travel at the front mounts. could be bent or broken w-arm, seized shaft in w-arm (where it bolts to the tunnel), worn bushings, or anything up there. take a good, long look and it should be apparent.
 
Sorry I had a complete DURRR moment on the track adjustment. It took me a few minutes to figure it out, it's a little different from my skidoos.

As for the W-arm, it looks straight to me.

So if my suspension traveled nicely BEFORE i replaced the broken brackets, and now with them installed - it doesn't - I can almost surely blame a seized shaft or broken bushings?

I know that pulling down the W-arm to mount it was hard. It always wanted to snap back up into the tunnel and it took all my might to hold it down long enough to line it up and bolt it to the brackets. Should it have been like that?
 
yes, and no. should be some resistance as your working against the shock and spring combo, but i dont recall that much of a fight. i would definately check for other underlying conditions contributing to the stiffness and cause of breakage.
 
To bolt the w-arm to the bracket...I had to jack up the front of the skid with the rear of the sled off the ground. I had to jack it up as high as I could before it picked up the rear off my stand, then I had to pull down as hard as I could in the position I was in to pull the W-arm down to get a bolt in it. Shouldn't have been that much of a battle huh? I know when I finished and jumped on the back, there was a loud CRUNCH. It didn't happen any other time I jumped around on it.

Sounds like I am not going to get to ride this sled tomorrow!!

I was just about jumping on the back of the sled and it was BARELY moving down, whereas before I replaced the brackets it would travel and bottom out if I bounced hard enough.

It looks like the shock & spring have to come off, then unbolt the w-arm at the brackets and then the tunnel right. How hard will it be to get the shock back on with the skid in the sled? Or will the shock be fully extended and it'll slip right back on? If the skid has to come out I'll just park it and ride my 'doo the rest of the year and fix this pig in the off-season.
 
Well I just went and pulled the w-arm & shock. The bushings are fine, the shaft is fine. Everything was greased heavily. The W-arm is straight. I unbolted the shock and I was able to compress it on the floor putting downward pressure on it, but it took a lot of weight and without knowing how it SHOULD feel, I have no reference. The coil is turned a little past halfway down the shock.

While the W-arm was out again, I took the opportunity to jump on the suspension and it bounces freely.

I'm at a loss?? Everything looks straight, everything appears to be in good condition.

I'm completely defeated...LOL.

I checked everything over again today. Everything is straight, I can compress the front shock. I put everything back together and sure enough, the suspension compresses an inch with me jumping all over the sled.

I guess I just need to see another Pro-Action skid in person and see how it should operate. The Viper I messed around with at the dealer compressed with ease??

My buddies SRX is the same exact way as my suspension is right now. Is 180lbs of me jumping on the back of it not enough to compress it and replicate what'll happen on the trails?
 
Did you put the brackets on backwards pushing the base of the W arm to far back? This could bind the shock causing the problem you have.

My XT had a seized Top shock and it would barely compress i would look there next (have extra hands ready if you take the bolts out of the top shock as it will drop) if it suddenly compresses then i would have the shock checked.

The brackets are installed too far away. It looks like I need to flip them around. Looking at parts diagrams didn't help but seeing this picture, it definitely looks like I need to flip them around...ugh.

It was hard enough to pull the W-bar down to the brackets with them installed too far away... I can't even begin to imagine how hard it'll be with them installed correctly. Looks like I'll have to loosen the track quite a bit and hope I can install this with the skid still in the chassis otherwise I'm gonna scream if I have to pull it back out!! LOL

might be easier as the shock will be working correct.

If it makes you feel better i was thinking they went the other way in my head thats why i looked up some pics when my skid was out :)
 
Loosened the limiter straps and pulled the lower shock mount, connected with ease.

Stripped track tension nut so I pulled the whole skid so I could get a grip on the nut with an adjustable. Sucked having to go through the extra effort but surprisingly the skid came out with ease! But, after getting the w-bar mount installed right - this sled is pretty nice on the trails!

Total gas hog though, but I think I burned some of that fuel up when the track was too tight. Braindead, is your XT a pig too?

Also, I noticed my lights dim a considerable amount when it returns to idle and when I hit the brakes. Normal or not?

It also does something a little funny when returning to idle maybe every other time. It sounds like it wants to die, the idle drops down to 1200 or so - but it never dies. If you barely blip the throttle it goes back to normal, or if you blip it on the way back down to idle it will idle normally. Whatcha think?

1200 is to low adjust the idle up a little i think the hood says 1600rpm. Low idle can cause low voltage output therefore poor lights, hopefully thats all, or it could be several other things, such as a stator or something.

I would adjust the idle first and see what happens.

They aren't the nicest on gas, i think i get 10-12mpg on the XT and like 8 on the DX(needs to be jetted down from the pipes it had)

You can look at the plugs and see how its running alot are running fat and sucking down the fuel.
