rather nasty clunking noise on accel or braking. buddy says maybe the chain is screwed...motor runs fine and the sled will move, but it sounds bad. I'm waiting for a friend's trailer to show up.

does this sound like a chain issue? I'm replacing the track soon so hopefully it won't be a hard fix, but I wanted to get some riding in before then...

If your track is really loose, could be ratcheting, but wouldn't do it on braking. Chain is best bet. Will need to remove to do track anyway.
 
Oh the speedo doesn't work either (did the other day)..it seems like I have either a working speedo or a working tach, but not both. The battery is trashed..I am hoping that's the problem there.

One minute I'm running 60mph down a railroad bed, the next I'm slowing to a stop and that noise started on braking from maybe 15mph-stop. I doubt the sled has been wound out much at all in the last year or two (previous owner ran it around his house) -- would that cause spontaneous failure of drive bearings? We had been riding for about an hour and a half before this, over some fairly rough trails. We had maybe a mile on nice smooth trail when it broke.

I've found these part numbers..

93317-33179-00 Bearing, Cylindrical $15.55
93317-21578-00 Bearing, Cylindrical $13.79

I imagine I'll have to pull it apart first to make sure what's bad, but I'm trying to get an idea of what it'll cost to fix.

Seeing the sleds new to you ? its hard to say how it was really taken care of. Best thing to do is get it home. Get it in the air as high as you can and start checking thing out. Try and see it the drive shaft is tight or does it have any play. Play is bad. If your droping the drive its a good time to do that track and go through the suspension. Let us know what you find.
 
I put about 15 miles on it prior to today, and probably 20 today..so it made 35 miles or so before this happened. It's home now, safely on a trailer. New to me, yes - 86xx miles on it.

I already have new limiting straps (frayed), new hyfax (not too bad but they are cheap so I might as well), and a new lower control arm (bent).

I'm bringing it over to a friend's (amateur sled mechanic) tomorrow, so we'll take a look at it and see what's what. Hopefully it's not too bad.

A bit off topic, but I'm looking at 96 1.075 studs down the middle on a 1" track (off an RX1) -- will that work okay for me?
 
if it has 8600+ miles on it, and the speedo drive bearing was never gone thru or checked, i would be willing to be that it is cashed. when those bearings go, the speedo usually quits working.

That is my experience as well.

Check the chain tension before you get too far though. With that many miles, it may need a few things. If the driveshaft bearings are original, you probably need to put a set on now.

It is not hard work, just take your time and don't force anything.

If you have a question, ask here before proceeding:)
 
As we're going to be pulling stuff apart anyway, I might as well replace what 'might' be bad if it's fairly inexpensive. Is there any reason I should replace the chain (if it's not obviously worn)? Does anyone have a part number handy for the driveshaft bearing? I'm looking at a parts fiche but I am not 100% sure what's what.

I'd rather spend a few bucks up front and fix stuff before it breaks. :)
 
What year sled??? Dont get ahead of youself untill you see excactly whats wrong. You sound like me (cant stand it, no patience). See what you need and post pics of parts if your not sure. You might be able to get what you need cheaper from a member here in the classifieds. As ive learned nothing is inexpensive on a yamaha, but you get what you pay for. When your done this sled will be better than new!!

Hahaha yeah, I hate waiting...I lived in NH most of my life and I've never had a sled - now that I do, I want as little downtime as possible! It's a 2000 VMax 700 Deluxe...elec. start, reverse, etc.
 
If you locked brake up causing track to lock up and that's when it started making noise,,, I'll bet all I've got, which isn't much on speedo side drive shaft bearing......
 
I dont have any pics handy, but if you go to babbittsonline.com and use the oem parts finder. Your part for the drive bearing will be under Track drive 1, part #7. This is the spedo side drive bearing.

I don't believe I locked it, but we'll check it out.
 
My sled was doing this. Then one day as I was riding taking it easy sled just stopped moving. The collar on my jackshaft spun out. If you can see jackshaft it will look discolored from heat caused by the slippage if it has been going on awhile.
 
Pretty well a sure thing it's the PTO side axle bearing if your speedo quit. I throw a new bearing in every year on all my hard riding customers. Can be changed in 15 minutes and its alot easier than relacing a gauled axle.

Good to know. I tend to run stuff hard but try to take care of it, so I should probably replace it whether or not it's bad. I'm not familiar with sled terminology - is that the same bearing mentioned above?
 
Yes PTO side means power take off (clutch site). So hence PTO side bearing.
So your pistons would be PTO (clutch), center (center), MAG (exhaust side, magnito). Have a chance to get at it yet!?
 
Brought it to a buddy's house today. Took him about ten seconds to discover that the lock nut had backed off the chain tensioner, which was quite loose.

We're putting a different track on anyway, so he'll pull the cover and make sure everything is ok inside.
