high engagement , why ?

02 Viper 1600 miles , ya, doesn't get rode much. All stock, Clutch engages at 5000 rpm or more, engine warm on hard pack snow, new belt, sheaves clean. WOT is about 8200. What could be the problem ? Should I be looking for a cracked spring , a bad weight ? I did a search , but can't pinpoint.
 
you want 3900,what spring you have in? stock weights and rivets?

clutches ever been removed and inspected?

Daman, Glad to hear from you,
It is all original stock, I don't know exact #s. Thing is It use to engage at 3900, now it doesn't, like something happened all of a sudden.
Primary never been inspected, secondary disassembled cleaned, inspected, reinstalled. found no problems, only has 1600 easy miles.

what max said and yea on your post here,grooves in the weight arms just good looking at etc...
 
Cracked primary spring would do the opposite (friend just busted one on his SXR, engaged at about 2500rpm, lol)... and cracked secondary would lead to a wicked bog when ya take off...

I agree with the others, dust in the sliders...
 
Mine was like that too last year, this year took er apart, the primary was seized up, had to stand on it to seperate. it was eating belts too. Took alot of work to make operate smoothly again

thats why every other year depending on mileage they should be disassembled inspected cleaned and back in use.
 
CLUTCH MIGHT BE VERY DIRTY, EXCESSIVE BELT DIRT WILL CAUSE THIS, THESE GUYS COVERED ALOT, POSSIBLEY BAD CLUTCH ROLLERS ALSO. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
I got a puller from local dealer, I got clutch off, and removed Primary sheave cap, Does anyone know any tricks on removing spider from fixed sheave / I know its reverse threads but, i cant seen to get mine apart. Also i dont have a fixed sheave holding tool, I am using a big vise with blocks of wood to hold. Help !

Put some grease in there fill the hole and hydraulic the thing off... grease does not compress very well so it will create alot more pressure than oil leave overnight and in the mornin it should pop!
 
Ok , I got it apart, Used small amount of heat behind fixed sheave and welded together my own spanner wrench.
I just gave it the once over and it is extremely dirty with belt dust, all parts rollers , weights & bushings look good, I will clean & reassemble and run. Hopefully the dirt was why it was engaging so high.
 
I don't want to take over this thread, but is there a write up, like how to clean carbs, for cleaning clutches? I have never touched my clutches and don't want to pay someone to clean them for me. Sounds easy but I'd like to see pictures and get proper steps on how to do it.

After cleaning & inspection, I found no wear marks on weights or rollers (rollers spin free), I will take photos & show them tomorrow , maybe one of you guys will spot something I missed.
