2011 Mystery Sled!!!

Talked to my dealer this morning and he said Yamaha had been getting about 158hp on this motor, but were in the works of tweaking out some more.

Until you get it stuck - then you will feel the weight. I sold my 09 XTX because it was so heavy. Other than the weight it was a fun sled.

I have to agree. I talked and talked on me never buying the newer style Grizzly700 due to the power steering and FI till I rode one and I was sold. Picked up a 08 with 500 miles for $5500 beats the hell out of $9000 OTD for a new one. Couldnt be happier with the power steering and FI of this machine.

BTW I also always talked the 4s sleds down due to there weight(Mrsled drill for for this a while back) till I rode one and not long after I bought a Apex. I hop on and off my SRX and Apex quite often and the only major diff I feel it in the handling aspect is cornering, but again check the ground clearence diff and suspension travel diff. between the 2. I think its more the older foke complaining about the weight more than anyone.

Reports have the EPS as adding 5-6 pounds. It's an electrical power steering for those of you who do not know, no hoses or oil or anything. The spar frame may be die cast now which means the whole front bulkhead are may be diecast with the related weight savings(this is speculation on my part following reports of a 'webbed' front spar). The new skis are blow molded which means they are lighter.

Shave a couple pounds in the motor and I'd be surprised if there isn't a net loss in overall weight. At any rate, we'll all know on the 2nd.

02 SRX No ER Dry Weight 522lbs
04 ViperER Dry Weight 529lbs
06 ApexER Dry Weight 551lbs

20lbs diff.......Is this really what you guys are complaining about in the 4s sleds....20lbs?????

You could easily drop that weight in the suspension, exhaust, and seat.

I would be amazed if the new apex doesn't weigh at least 10 pounds less than the current one, even with EPS.

I bet many riders here could drop 20 lbs off their own seat.

True about the weight......but I'd rather drop it off my belly!!! I always thought the weight of a viper dry was reported at 489. At any rate. I held out for a long time on buying a 4 stroke. I have a 09 Nytro RTX right now and it did take a while to get used to the transition but I can honestly say now that I love this sled. It is a blast. Now, my viper is not average and it rides very well....but when I go back to it for an occasional ride I just don't care for it anymore. I have a few friends in the same boat. None of us will ever go back.

Yea Im one of them, in no way am I huge(220lbs 6ft) but I SHOULD be 190-200lbs for my build. But I love food to much. LOL

Matt the 01 SXR700 weighs 489lbs. I checked that one too.

i don't think those dry weights are very accurate, especially if supplied by yamaha.

OK??????? Have you weighed any of these sleds wet or dry before?????What numbers are you coming up with????? I hate when people counterdict things and supply no other info.

I have removed over 60lbs off my 2002 SRX and it is weighing in just over 490lbs bone dry...so I know for a fact the SRX weight is off.
I would bet the Viper at 529 is close...I have never weighed any of the 4 srokes

duh, i don't have too. the magazines do it every year. yamaha is always the farthest from published weights. spend $15 and gain some knowledge. LOL.

anybody that gets the same mags knows what i am talking about.

Again all I see in your post above is letters, no numbers regarding weight what so ever. If you actually gained so much knowledge from these mags then where are some real life numbers on these sleds????? All you have provided is talk and no knowledge of what these sleds actually weigh out to in the mags so put that $15 to good use and supply some knowledge, not talk.

Usally....yamahas weights are off yes,,Ive seen wright ups before with Yamaha's claimed weight then a scaled weight, heck they even had a yammie hanging from a scale 10 feet up in the air!!! lol

i just don't remember where someplace on the WWW.

Yamaha and cat were always the worst offenders of publishing unreal weights.

I recall seeing many issues that had weights, but I couldn't ever find those mags if I tried. I probably do not have them anymore.

Someone should be able to find them online, especially if you have a subscription. I think you have access to all old stuff with a subscription.

The bottom line is that the 4 stoke yamaha's don't feel as heavy as they are, and this EPS supposedly makes them feel lighter than they already feel.

I wonder if and or when the new 09+ r1 firing order/ crossplane crank will be incorporated into the apex/ or other sled?

I know the new R1 motor is lighter than the previous version with 4 valves, and the apex still uses the old design from the original R1 with 5 valves. I bet if the new motor is a 4 valve one based off the previous couple generations of 4 valve r1 mills, that it would lose the couple pounds that EPS would add.

edit...

If this new apex has the crossplane crank of the 09+ r1, that will be a HUGE upgrade to the apex. I know when the 09 r1 came out, any rider of a traditional 4 cylinder literbike noticed how SMOOTH the new crossplane crank r1 was compared to the traditional I4 bike motor. With all this talk of how smooth this new apex is, I am hoping the apex gets that style of new motor.
