Gotta Love that DCS!

A couple of points that illustrate how good Yamaha's SRX DCS system is:

I was on a long trail ride that included fairly long rough portages between lakes. There was very little snow for cooling, temp was 0C/32F, and we could only move at 10 -20 mph, obviously my SRX engine would be running pretty hot on the slow trails,[I don't have a temp guage, just the stock over temp light]. The Nitro XTX rider with us had to use his ice scratchers to keep from overheating. When we came out of the bush onto the next lake we all would be hard on the throttles[wide open]right away the DCS light would flash on my SRX, it must have been sensing the detonation caused by overly hot cylinder heads. As soon as I ran in the snow on the lake ,for a minute or so, I could then run wide open, at will, for long distances with no DCS flash...the system was preventing potential damage from my attempted abuse of a hot engine[even though I never had the over temp light] This was all on good, no ethanol, fresh, premium fuel.

After refueling[my tank was near empty] at a remote "No Name" fuel supplier that only had regular fuel[who knows what octane] I would get the DCS after about 20 secs of wide open throttle. This continued until the next fueling stop where I again tanked up with "E" free premium and never saw the DCS flash again!

This is exactly why I picked up the 2002 SRX...for its DCS protection!

Must be nice, I'm still stuck in the last millenium. I would really like to update for the better headlight, i ride at night a lot.
That old antique still sets the benchmark for performance though.

Amen..

ohhh what a lucky man he was..he was!!!...(Emerson/Lake/Palmer)
Carry on there sideshow..because if you would have blown that motor..you would have been a side show..lol

LOL!
You got that right!
My SRX has a tough job...the next smallest sled I ride with is a 2010 800R Renegade, a couple 900 [con] Fusions, 1050cc Nitro XTX , T CAT,,Warrior, Super Charged RX1...so its working hard all day on the lakes to ride with the pack! Thats why I need the DCS to be working!
It was always easy setting up a race sled that was only wide open for 10-12 sec at a time! Keeping a High Perf trail sled together that runs in all temps, on questionable fuels needs to be able to run 100mph ++, wide open across multi mile lakes is a real challenge!

thats why you need to say f*** it and be last in line...i would care less.

hmm that could of save my engine!... any one ever convert a 01 to have dcs? lol...
02 cdi and the 02 coolant rail with the sensor is probably all thats required...

how easily does the dcs flash? cuz yesterday once i hit 105 mph roughly, the light would come on, it was about -1/-3 decrees celcius, so like 30/27 ferenheight maybe...? could this be bad gas? or have anything to do with a can

One of the reasons I started this post was to point out something about the DCS that is fairly obvious but I had not thought of before.
The DCS picks up detonation, it does not care what causes it. On the ride I referred to in this post, my SRX picked up Detonation ,and set off the DCS, for two seperate reasons under different situations.

1] high engine and coolant temp due to slow ridiing with little to no cooling

2]poor quality fuel

This year, I had not seen my DCS light flash at all, until my last ride, even at -28c

Some things that could trigger the DCS:

-detonation from poor fuel
-detonation from anything that causes a lean condition, jetting, air leak, dirty carbs ect
-detonation from high engine temps
- mechanical issues that cause abnormal vibration, crank bearings, crank out of phaze ect

Another interesting point...I have never had the DCS light flash at any time other then WOT!?

Would you guys recomend moding my 01 to have dcs on it? if its possible... im starting to thing it would be a good idea for me...

if so... can ya point me in the right direction... on what I would need.. what can just "hook right up"and what would need some cutting?

going to repost this on my thread so i dont take over this thread....

It wasn't that long ago on this forum that guys were dissabling their DCS because of the nusance performance loss when it would trigger.
Installing it, on a 2001 SRX, would not be difficult, but it would depend what you would have to pay + were willing to pay for the required parts.

Most sleds pre DCS are out there running OK but you have to ensure your jetting, fuel, and setup is safe by checking piston wash and plugs on a regular basis.[just like everyone has always done]
The DCS system could possibly create all kinds of grief with after market heads + engine mods as it is set up to sense a specific harmonic freqency on a stock engine.[although its working well on mine... thats ported, Aaen piped, with Peak heads]

If you wanted to install DCS on a 2001 you would need the following parts from a 2002 SRX:
-2002 SRX coolant rail
-2002 SRX DCS sensor
-2002 SRX CDI
-2002 SRX DCS light[I have moved mine from the left side instrument panel to centre right between the tach + speedo]
-2002 SRX wiring harness or adapting yours

As you can see there's a lot of parts needed...you might be better off picking up a complete sled!!!

i know there is some bad gas in it, like half a tank, because my nytro ran like shit on that gas. and for some reason my centre spark plug comes loose, replaced it and the washer/ lock washer thing was split but it stayed tight for a day and a half... new plug became loose again, any ideas? and does this have anything to do w/ dcs?

In regards to your spark plug issue...remove the old plug, clean the mating surface[don't let any crud fall in the cylinder plug hole], install a brand new plug and this time actually torque it with a torque wrench to the factory recommended torque specs.....14 foot pounds....
BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO OVER TORQUE!!!

In regards to your DCS...you basically answered your problem...bad gas!

hmm that is alot more work.. and especially taking a chance with it for ported heads... well I guess ill just moniter the plug and wash reading more frequently... and go from there... seems like a big enough job.. but seems to be worthed if you plan on keeping the sled stock!
