Gotta Love that DCS!
A couple of points that illustrate how good Yamaha's SRX DCS system is:
I was on a long trail ride that included fairly long rough portages between lakes. There was very little snow for cooling, temp was 0C/32F, and we could only move at 10 -20 mph, obviously my SRX engine would be running pretty hot on the slow trails,[I don't have a temp guage, just the stock over temp light]. The Nitro XTX rider with us had to use his ice scratchers to keep from overheating. When we came out of the bush onto the next lake we all would be hard on the throttles[wide open]right away the DCS light would flash on my SRX, it must have been sensing the detonation caused by overly hot cylinder heads. As soon as I ran in the snow on the lake ,for a minute or so, I could then run wide open, at will, for long distances with no DCS flash...the system was preventing potential damage from my attempted abuse of a hot engine[even though I never had the over temp light] This was all on good, no ethanol, fresh, premium fuel.
After refueling[my tank was near empty] at a remote "No Name" fuel supplier that only had regular fuel[who knows what octane] I would get the DCS after about 20 secs of wide open throttle. This continued until the next fueling stop where I again tanked up with "E" free premium and never saw the DCS flash again!
This is exactly why I picked up the 2002 SRX...for its DCS protection!
