97 SX700 oil pump question

Well here we have tonight's findings, I'm pleased but somewhat mystified that a few mm on the cable could make such a difference...23mm on the cable.

I traveled 30Km (19 miles) and burnt 5L (1.3gal) and 125ml (4.25oz) giving me a ratio of 40:1 which is what i mix my dirtbike and wich is fine by me.

Plug on the magneto side is a touch greyish for my liking so i may increase oil in very small increment. Plugs get darker the closer you get to clutch side.

I will only rest when I have burnt a full tank of fuel and seen how much oil. Also will check the plugs at mid and high range.

I must say that this is a fantastic site and I wish to thank everyone who took time to chime in and offer advice. You guys put the bike site I'm a moderator of to shame!! LOL

I'll post when i get more miles on with final results...thanks again!

oh here is a very handy ratio calculator as a token of my appreciation hehe

Good to hear, keep working at it and dial it in till you get that 1 to 1 down.

oh and thats the same calculator i use. keep us posted ;)!

How do I fatten (more oil) to that magneto side cylinder? Does it now become a jetting issue or an air/fuel mixture issue?

you cant, oil pump feeds fuel pump where oil and gas is mixed then sent to each carb.

you can't tune oil pump buy plug color, doesn't work that way.

Well after being out for two amazing nights and logging a couple hundred miles, i've done some calulations and determined that i'm running closer to 50:1. I had this sled for a year and this is the best it's ever been (even beat an 800Polaris Edge!) Throttle response is crisp, plugs look great and I'm happy!

I'm just a bit embarassed that i didn't know such a small adjustment could make such a huge difference.hahaha

The temperatures were mild and trail conditions loose and i've calculated fuel mileage to 12mpg...moderate to brisk pace. That sound about normal?

sounds like your on the right track yes, 12 to 13 mpg is what you should see out of a stock well tuned red head, keep up the good work watch plug color(jetting) keep track of oil usage and stick with that 50:1 and your good to go.

thanks for keeping us posted nice to hear it.

i cant see your sled but when i ruined the rings in one of my turbo b series hondes it smoked on start up and burned through oil/gas like a mother****er def worth looking into
