Noticed that my water pump on my '02 Viper is leaking. It is showing green foam on belly pan below the water pump and noticed after a 100 mile trip that the coolant level dropped 1/2 inch in coolant tank.
Anyway I know I need to fix this but was wondering what parts I need to order. Does Yamaha make a seal kit or do I need to order individule parts? If so what parts do you recommend I order so when I tear into this thing I am not down for weeks waiting for more parts. I have a local Yamaha dealer but they do not sell sleds or stock parts for them. It takes about a week for every order. Just want to gather up everything I will need and get it done.
 
look at the parts breakdown on Babitts website, there is an oil seal, & a mechanical seal behind impeller, also a rubber washer seal on the impeller bolt, I also recommend using loc-tite in the impeller shaft during re-assembly & let it dry overnight before adding coolant.
 
Everything is ordered.
Mechanic at dealer says that getting the old mechanical seal and oil seal out is a major pain in the butt. Anybody have any tricks to get these out?
 
Try a small chisel to fold the outside in and spin it. Oil seal is easy enough. To put the new mechanical seal in press it in using the impeller bolt and a socket or old clutch cap bushing. I just did mine and then it started taking more coolant... I had a rubthrough on the hose by the front motor mount.
 
Yup, I had more than a few kind words for the mechanical seal. Pry the edges down like Stephfg said and just work at it. Needle nose vise grips are handy for this. Just be careful and try not to damage the lip that the mechanical seal is seated against when prying the edges down.

Ejcamaro, I probably used many of the same words you did! Took me over 2 hours to get it out.

When pressing it in make sure whatever you use doesn't squish the impeller shaft. You might also want to use green loctite on the impeller splines and bolt. It's a bit of a crack filler that will help make sure the coolant stays on the right side of the impeller.

Now I am more informed but also scared to death to mess with this thing now. I only have a slight leak. Showing green foam below pump on the belly pan.
Wondering if I should wait till spring to tear into this.
 
Okay, so its been almost a year since my original post. I did not take on the water pump since the season was about over before the dealer got me all the parts.
After talking to the mechanic at the Yamaha dealer he said the mistake everyone makes is that they do not replace the shaft when replaceing all the seals. He said the seals will wear into the shaft and it will still leak after new seals are installed.
So I replaced everything in there. seals, shaft, impeller and cover o-ring gasket. I was careful with the ceramic seals and after it was all back together it is slowly leaking out of the weep hole.
My question is, Does these seals take some run time to seat? or if it leaks from the beginning will it keep leaking?
I am debating running the sled for awile before I dig back into this pump again.
 
something not right with the mechanical seal then.You will have to replace it again and make sure it was not damaged going back in.I replaced my oil seal and mech. seal on both my SXR 600 and SRX700 just a while back.I even re-used the rubber seal on the pump cover on the 600.I have no leaks to speak of.
She will just keep spitting out your fluid if you leave it,hate to tell you..but tear at it again and be careful.

Mechnical seal has been re done. And no leaks !!
Not that bad of a job to do. I found that the ceramic had a crack in the first new one I installed. Probably my fault, but live and learn.

does anyone know if my sled will still over heat if my impeller has a half peice of one of the fan thingies broke off? it broke off and my impeller got stuck, and over heated and my head went black, the motor is still working like new, but it wasnt circulating.
 
Don't use the damaged impeller. Buy either a new one or a used one for someone on this site.

Also. DO NOT reuse the rubber coated seal washer that goes under the impeller bolt. Some people have suggested reusing it. It is often the sourc of the leaks. The mechanical seal gets blamed often when the actual source of the leak is the rubber coated seal. Also, take a good look at the impeller shaft for corrosion and pitting. I have seen many impeller shafts so badly corroded the oil seal leaks. Do reuse any parts that are not in excellent condition or else you will do chasing leaks.

As other have suggested, use green loctitie on the splines for the impeller. It locks the impeller in place, prevents it from wobbling from a loose fit on the splines and gives another layer of protection under the rubber coated seal washer.

Hi Jim..I hope what you are saying about the rubber washer may be my issue.After my rebuild 2 seasons back on 2 sleds,the SRX is leaking at the pump.I have ordered new washer and mech seal..how will I know if it is just the washer.I am planning on changing the mech seal anyways..maybe..This time won't have the motor out to do it..could be a pain in the you know what....:o|
 
DAMN IT! after all that work and all that time waiting for my seals she's leaking! so this is what I done and hopefully someone can tell me where I messed up. I used ALL new seals but a second hand water pump shaft. I also used blue loctite trick on the impeller spline. I pushed the mechanical seal into place by putting the impeller in place and tapping on that until the mechanical seal went flush to the case. I screwed up somewhere! but where!??
 
I dont mean to hijack the thread but did anyone else think of just plugging up the weep hole (piss hole) on the bottom of the case? or would the coolant make it passed the oil seal and into the crankcase. just wondering
 
don't get me nervous now.I have to solve my pump leak on the SRX yet with the Engine in place..gonna be not a fun project....all my parts were changed a few seasons back,so can't figure why there is a leak.On my SXR it is still gone as it was done at the same time.drives me nuts to say the least.Oh well the prediction for snow this Winter is grim anyways,probably will just have sleds sitting..drought here continues..it is so dry now I can almost get my shoe stuck in the cracks in the back field and my Pond water is way down from all the watering I have been doing....
 
i used a 1 inch socket to seat the mechanical seal,not the impeller.green loctite on the splines and blue on the bolt.i changed the oil seal,mechanical seal,ceramic seal on back of impeller,and washer seal.i cleaned the bore and the splines with degreaser to remove any old oil,and let the loctite set up for 48 hrs.so far so good but if i did it over i would get a new shaft to.
