Need expert advice on Complete Viper build

Will 100% be going from 121" to 136" on my stock 02 sx viper. i do a ton of off trail riding and love to get into the deep powder. I do NOT want STUDS! what is the tallest lug i can go with the stock drivers? 1.25 or 1.5? and if i dropped to the smaller drivers, how tall of a lug can i go then??

Im going to do a full rebuild on my viper this summer..
136 extension
new running boards
new handlebars
white headlight covers
extra gas tanks
rumble pack silencer
powdercoated complete front suspension
white skis

I cannot start the project now because of college, but if anyone has any ideas, suggestions, parts for sale, or anything, please feel free to chime in. im welcome to ideas
 
Off trail you really need a skid that transfers better than the Pro-Action although you can modify them to transfer. Here is what I did and why . . .

144 XTX skid - it was available for $350 brand new, transfers very well, rides very good, and the tip-up rails limit pushing when on trails

8-tooth extrovert drivers - You need to gear down anyway, so they provide 11% without changing gears and you can run the track loose

144 x 1.25 ripsaw (don't do this) - I already had the track - I would go with the Intense or Backcountry 1.5 or 1.75 which is another reason to use 8-tooth drivers.

If you are going to use this sled primarily off-trail, I would go with at least the 144 x 1.5 off-trail track, 8 tooth drivers, and a skid that transfers and has a low attack angle.

You should be able to do it for less than $1K.
 
really? if i can get a new skid that cheap, thats a way better idea.. what other skids do you know about that would work well and be easy to bolt under the viper tunnel?

good advice Ding. but if budget is a major issue, i would like to add the idea of relocating the stock skid and adding rail extensions, either way you will need a tunnel extension, and then do what Ding said, less the skid. with the relocate, you can alter the approach angle slightly. i think the proaction can be tuned for what your trying to accomplish, if you choose to relocate it. however, if money is no object, go with Ding's theory.
 
yea, see, the extension kit with track is over $700 bucks. adding all the extra's like wheels, and bs stuff like that would put it at like 850 900 i think. so ding's advise wouldn't be too bad.

still need to know what skids would fit my stock viper and bring it to a 136 or 141 or 144.
 
ding left out the part about the tunnel extension. you still need it, regardless of what method you use to lengthen your sled. my advice saves the cost of the skid, but adds the cost of rail extensions(around $70, vs skid, $300 plus), other than that, the expenses are still the same: track, drivers, remounting, etc. in other words, regardless of what you decide to do, if you go longer, tunnel extension will be needed, period.
 
yea i see your point, but i've decided to do a newer skid. i went out and looked at my old skid, and its really shot. I feel i would just be chasing parts to ither fix or replace once i took it out, so i'll just go with a new skid where i don't have to worry about all that stuff. now to find out what skids would be the easiest to fit in......
 
If u ride off traill don't bother with 136 go 141 or longer. Just did this on my srx and love it

If u plan on doing anything with the running boards unroll the edges and put apex running board grips on the edge.

are you going to be expecting a top end hp increase w/the rumble pack silencer? you will lose top end hp w/that can. they do have the best sound IMO tho and do shed some pounds for the mountain/powder riders. i noticed more bottom-mid snap on my rev w/that can, but top end wasn't as good as stock can.
 
Yea, i know im going to lose top end speed, but thats ok because im usally not trying to top out the sled. I did go with a 144 skid and 8 tooth drivers. I got a great deal, and i figure seeing as many people like their viper mountain, i'll turn mine into one. i figure that would be easiest and cheapest. Now on to buying more fun stuff! :) ;)!
 
now i got a question about skis???? i assume mountain ski's from a yamaha would be better than stock viper skis or should i wait and save up for aftermarket skis?? i know i can pick up skis off a phazer mtn. or something like that really cheap. is it worth it??

Get yourself a set of simmons skis they are an awsome all around ski and have been out for a long time so finding a set used on ebay or whatever shouldn't be a problem.
 
Kimpex Arrow Skis rock for trail riding. Not one bit of darting. Deff the most under rated AM skis out there.
 
I like SLP SLT's haven't tried the powder ones, but heard good things..........

I agree 100%. They are awesome trail skis.... no darting, no pushing through corners like dooleys, steer easy. I put 6" Shaper bars on mine and it rails corners-- and they look sharp too. But I don't think they are a good off trail choice.

yea i need a good off trail set of skis. but you guys don't think that mountain skis from like a apex, nitro, or phazer would be a cheap and good idea???

Personally I think it's a great idea. Yamaha mountain skis are among the best in the business today for off trail use. If you can find a way to make it work I say go for it.
