Well I got the motor all out tonight, didn't take to long either. Will begin to tear her down tomorrow. The motor has over 12,000 km's on it..so be interesting how she looks inside.Replacing pistons, rings, seals, gaskets and cleaning it all up.This is the first time this motor has been out,so chasis is really dirty and needs a good scrub.
Since I got the SRX done and running, this one should be simple now.Since I know the steps of teardown and re-build a little better. It is a bonus the SRX is running, gives me confidence. It is a lot of work and I would think anyone who has some kind of mechanical experience can tackle it,but not for everyone.

Let me know how you get that engine bay cleaned, I just pulled my motor and it looks pretty nasty also in the bottom. Thinking simple green or engine degreaser and a pressure washer..

that's basically it and a lot of rags to boot.I see where the mice made their nest also... :o| Got most of the motor apart. There is blowby on the pistons .But no cracks or chips present either.Connecting rods seem fine also.I am glad to see their is a lot oil in the cases and on everything.Fogging with ATF was a good thing.Even the carb bowls where full of it.I took the reed cages out to check the reeds, they are Carbon Tech reeds and there is absolutely no light showing thru when I look at them against a light bulb.Them reeds are great with 8000 plus km's on them.
Just got to take off pump, engine brackets and then I will split cases and start the re-build.This 600 going to love it..loll

Hey Scott. The cross hatching on the cylinders looks good to.Remember I ran Blue Marble Oil in there for a number of seasons..all looks well.Have to go out for supplies this am.So will start to split the cases this early pm.

got the motor ripped apart tonight, but it was harder then the SRX.! guide pin was holding the 2 case halves damn good, took a little time to separate the damn cases... :o| Anywho..how the hell do I remove that PTO side bearing on the end in order to get the seal off.? It won't slide off, tried taping with a flat bar and hammer lightly, but no go... :o| :dunno: Is there a trick to this one.Sprayed some Blaster on it for over the night, will see tomorrow.NEED HELP with this one, don't want to damage that bearing.

My repair manual suggested a pitman arm puller for that bearing. But I brought the crank to a machine shop and had them true it and replace the bearing and the seal. My bearing was bad... that's why I tore down the motor.

the cylmer manual says to use a bearing separter/puller set.Man that will cost me a few $..Checked out the price for one up to 3" bearing capacity is $100..yikes!!!

well I'll get the puller and a deep and wide enough socket to bang the sucker bang on.It states that the bearing must be heated to 70 degrees F by boiling in oil before installing it.Man this is going to be an experience and a half if I can get that bearing off and back on....Why the hell did Yamaha make it like this, the SRX crank one year difference is not constructed this way.what gives??????

Went to Farm & Fleet and picked up a bristle brush that attaches to a drill. I already had an extension from the "muffler boring" mod. Simple Green was my degreaser of choice and it worked very well. HOT water from the house helped ALOT also.

might tackle that today since weather will be good yet...towards end of week wet weather sneaking in and probably will be turning to snow as the temps drop at night.Already there has been snow North of us..it's coming!!!

Try this to get the bearing back on without hitting it ,put the crank in the freezer then get the bearing good and hot ,it should go back on quite easy with little effort .

well I bought that puller/separator and hooked it on.I broke 2 of the bolts on the extension pieces.Pissed me off.I finally got a 3 jaw puiller on the bearing with all the torque I can give her off my compressor, she ain't budging.Just left it like that.I can't use the crankshaft no since I had to cut away all around the seal with a dremel tool inorder to get enough space for the pullers.Looks like this project is at a FULL STOP!!!Probably will need a new bearing also..to expensive already. Can't spend any more on the 600.I am now considering parting out everything to re-coup some money. Will heavily think about it and let you guys know. :o| I haven't blown up over it.Now if the SRX breaks down this winter,I'll have to ride old faithfull 76 Pantera..wow!!!!

That really sucks Doug, You could buy a new bearing and get the shop to remove the old one for you then you will be good to go no?

Just tried a little heat on the bearing with a heat gun,no go.That bearing don't wanna come off I guess. That's my luck. And the 2 bearings on each side of the seal are both closed bearings. Why wouldn't they have 1 side open for oil to flow thru?
