Glad I had the machine shop do mine... That bearing is expensive down here in the states, can't imagine what it's like up there!! Seriously the shop charged me $15 while I had the crank in to have them true it. so total for labor was $97.

I give ya credit for trying to do it yourself but sometimes
it is not worth the headache. Been there done that. Plus
that is your crank and pounding will not help any. However
the closer the pto bearing is to the clutch the stronger? IMO

I can pu 2 bearings from the USA for about $100 plus shipping(shipping,taxes,brokerage extra),but that is not the problem.Getting them off is.So if you add up $112 for puller,$137 for bearings total,shop fee min $100..I am at $351.00..probably more.Now I bought all new pistons,rings,clips,.pins,seals,mech seal,base gasket etc.. also.The bearings and labour will almost surpass the other parts. yikes again.
Did I mention $ getting low in bank.I am not working either for the past year also.Have to think this one over seriously.....
PS: time to dig the grave for the 600 or what.She has been loyal to me.

WELL,I went back into the garage and was determined to try it one more time.Set the compressor pressure up to 150 psi from the 120 psi.Sprayed Blaster around the race,heated up the lower ring quickly a few times and just kept the trigger pinner on the impact gun,a little more heat and POP she went..Couldn't believe me eyes..lol.The second bearing is good and spins nicely after cleaning and oiling it up.Opened up the seals on the outside bearing and there still is grease in there.Cleaned it out good to.Just wandering if I can just use the synthetic muti purpose grease or Blue Max High Temp Synthetic Complex grease I have here? Probably the high temp grease...Now I can carry on with the damn re-build.I am now scared a little how I will get that bearing back on.Have to clean the shaft and the inner race looks dirty to.

pics of that outer bearing.There is no mov ement or play when I move the inner race up and down.When the bearing poped,sound like the same sound when you remove a stubborn primary from the shaft,sound makes you jump...lol

I just was reading through my repair manual (since I just had mine apart also) and it said to use low temp grease when regreasing these, but someone else might have more experience and therefore have a better answer. I don't think the inside one has the seal on both sides either just on the outside, so it gets oil from the crankcase. OH and that bearing looks a whole lot better than mine did...

Sleddineinar -> What machine shop do you usually have do your work for you? I am a few hours directly south of you, but would like to keep them in mind.

So you are saying use low temp grease in that bearing.I intend on putting bearing in the oven at 200 F and crank in freezer all night.Then maybe it'll just slide back on the shaft with a slight tap.

In my experience if you do that you won't even need to tap it on...lol The way we did my 600 is just sit the crank in the weather (about 35F at the time) and lightly walk the flame from a propane torch over the inside race evenly, it shouldn't need too much heat then you should be able to slide it on with your hands and then take a piece of tube that contacts the inside race well and smack it a couple times to seat the bearing good. Worked well for me. I let the crank sit outside for about 20-30min.

does that bearing have to contact the collar the seal fits over?That would be your stop,but originall y when I removed it,I measures the front of it to the tip of the shaft and got 1.5 ".This position is about an 1/8" from the collar behind it.If I drive it all the way to the collar,the rest of the bearings will be out when I lay the crank back in.

I did that with chaincase bearings I didn't even have to tap it, they fell right into place.

I am about 90% sure it needs to be resting on the collar, and I went out to see if I still had my old 600 triple crank to verify and I didn't so I can say 100% that it is supposed to be that way so someone else on here is going to have to verify that with me.

yes sx600,it must have to butt up to the collar.I layed the crank in and positioned it with bearing guides in the middle of all the recess's.Measured the distance from collar to where the ring will sit into the case and it is pretty well dead on.That outside bearing with the c-ring is basically the only thing that lines up the crank perfectly.Hey I didn't know before I took everything out that that bearing was in front of the seal.Now if one wants to,you can pull of the primary and remove the outer seal of that bearing and pack it every season..cool.Have all my cyl,cases cleaned and washed up.Got the oil seal and mechanical seal installed on pump.Will try just for the hell of it tonight to see if that bearing will slide on with ease as all of you are saying.Wish me luck....

I've used an old electric skillet that we no longer used to heat shtuff up.

I was a little nervous about re -installing that bearing,but you guys were right.Crank in the freezer allday,bearing at 200 F in oven.Expected some tapping but bearing slide on to the collar with ease,a slight tap to make sure and a done deal...wicked!!!
Also got some 1500 F high heat black for the the exhaust.You spray it on and must heat cure it in an oven for an hour.Nice looking paint but stunk up the house..wife wasn't to impressed...lol

Now I see how moisture accumulates on a crank and bearings.After it was taken out of the freezer,it was defrosting and left a lot of moisture on the crank.I can see how if someone starts a motor and doesn't let it get hot,the moisture will stay and get amongst the bearings.I wiped it all down and just soaked the crank and bearings with 2 stroke oil.Tomorrow I will start to assemble the crank and cases.Then will try on my own to get them pistons connected by myself this time.
Still have to clean the major mess in the engine compartment,maybe that is the plan first since weather is still decent.Next week temps drop and they are calling for flurries middle of the week...
