Skidooslayer687 said:Now I did some research on it, found the 2001 and 2002 cdi boxes are the same, earlier model years were different part numbers. I guess the next question is are those the only 2 years that are compatible? A viper cdi with the dcs would not be compatible would it?
And another question would be if I do end up buying a new cdi, is there any aftermarket performance ones available or is it best to stick with the stock yammy part?
Thanks again guys, hopefully I can put an end to this nightmare of a problem soon enough!![]()
The 2001 + 2002 SRX CDIs will plug into either year and run the sled. The 2002 CDI has DCS the 2001 does not. The boxes are different.. If you plug a 2001 CDI into a 2002 SRX you will deactivate your DCS. The timing curves are the same.
Also a 2002/03 Viper CDI will plug into either a 2001 or 2002 SRX and run the sled...again no DCS but the timing curve is way to hot for day to day ridiing![read ENGINE DESTRUCTION!!!}It would work to test for start up and idle though. A 2004 + up DCS Viper's CDI will not spark a 2001 or 2002 SRX..trust me I have tried this!

IMO:
You have to systematically eliminate probable causes[I know you have checked a lot of these already but heres a list of Issues that could cause the problem]:
1 - bad spark plug
2 - bad coil or coil wire
3 - faulty spark plug cap[DO NOT USE AFTER MARKET HERE MOST ARE JUNK!]
4 - poor/low/or no compression[could be a light score that is causing a ring to stick]
5 - plugged carb circuit[make sure you check the filters under the float needle + seat]
6 - plugged or stuck float plunger
7 - fuel pump issue[remember each carb has a separate feed from pump]
8 - incorrect float level on that cylinder[too low or too high]
9 - wiring harness rub through
10 - stator or pickup[ these can fool you sometimes they test OK yet they are toast]
11 - CDI
Just some ideas:

Okay thanks for the list Bob! I know its not a bad plug, changed all 3 when it did this before, problem re-occured after, Also the plug caps are brand new yammy ones, carbs are clean, and i mean clean lol ive been through them 4 times. I tested compression, even across all 3, no significant drops. Fuel pump is new, problem still occurs. Ive checked the wiring harness, will go over it again though when I get some time to work on it again. Stator tested okay, posted results earlier on this thread... I think ive got it narrowed down to either the cdi or a really funny acting stator. All your guys help and ideas are very much appreciated btw! ![Smile :) :)](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/smile.png)
And thanks for the info on the boxes! Much appreciated.... So a question on the boxes, how is it that the 01 box and the 02 box have the same part number but the dcs feature is disabled on the 01??

I would suggest if Yamaha is only showing one part number for the 2001 + 2002 SRX boxes that they must be out of 2001 CDIs!
The numbers on the face of CDIs are as follows:
2001 SRX CDI: 8DN-20 F8T37572
2002 SRX CDI: 8DN-30 F8T38871
2002/03 VIPER CDI: 8EK-00 F8T37574
2004 + up DCS Viper: 8FE-00 F8T40171

So I finally got some more time to work on my sled, been extremely busy with work... anyways... Pulled the cdi box off, noticed on the backside where they put the black epoxy/silicone that right above the white plug. The other side is perfectly smooth. Looks like a bunch of pebbles of plastic but they are moulded right in with the silicon. Not sure if this is anything of course but just asking. It litterally looks like someone dropped a handful of plastic pieces about the size of small gravel pieces in before they siliconed it shut. Is this normal??
Also was wondering if there is anyplace where you can send your cdi to get tested? I know the quickest way is just to swap it out with another to test but my problem only occurs when its really cold out and Id much rather work on it now as opposed to -30 lol.
Thanks again!

wow, missed this thread before lots of reading but the good thing is you have done most of the checking/troubleshooting already. The 2001 and the 2002 cdi is a differnt box, the fiche is wrong and sideshow bob has posted the correct numbers for this. This debate actually came up a few years back also.
moving on to your problem, i see that betheviper already told you the cdi fires each coil and only 1, not all 3 as previous before 2000 ign systems. I also believe your problem lies in the cdi box and although they are rare to fail, there is no guarantee as to a electrical part, they are also some of the hardest problems to diagnose because it can be intermittant like yours.
I would search for a 02 srx cdi box, gotta be someone somewhere on the net parting out one, here in the classifieds, hardcore, ebay, etc. use the numbers sideshowbob posted to be sure to get the right one.

sounds like u have a needle and seat problem .......it probably flood the cylinder during the night ...try switching the needle and seat from a carb to another ...will be worst in cold day ...will almost doesnt happend if the sled sleep inside...had the same problem till i switch for newer carb

Thanks for the response Don, Yes I believe it to be much to intermittent to be a wiring harness issue, To me the problem is to specific to be something like the harness. And yes the 2002 boxes are definately hard to find lol, I can find lots of 2001 boxes which will work evidently but I dont want to disable the dcs system. Best thing Ive come up with so far is around $490 from a website that specializes in marine equipment for a 2002 box. Dealer wants around $700... lol a proverbial needle in a haystack. But I will keep looking and I will post results/updates if I find anything else.
ModSrx, not a carb problem, been through them countless times not, definately not a needle/seat problem, all 3 seal very well but thanks for the idea!
I just want to thank everyone for all the help/ideas and part numbers. Will definately help in the search for an 02 box!![Smile :) :)](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/smile.png)

I saw '02 CDIs at Yamaha Sports plaza for $436.00, but they are on backorder-- it would be nice to be able to try a used one before dishing out that much cabbage! Definitely keep in mind the stator.... my buddys Viper would die when it was hot for no reason, brought it to a dealer and stator tested fine. We didn't trust it, so he told them to put in a new one anyways, and it never happened again-- runs mint. I think the temperature and conditions when they're testing them is a lot different than when they're malfunctioning.
i think i see one on ebay at a good price ...........

try to see if its dry or wet went u start the engine ......or just check if u got spark at startup went its cold .....if it work after its warm up i'm pretty sure something is leaking gas in the cylinder ....if it does the problem after the sled is warm up then is not in carb ....

I basically have it narrowed down to either stator or cdi, Im leaning heavily towards the cdi but im not ruling out the stator. And it would definately be nice if I could pick a used one up or if I had a buddy with an 02 that could try mine.
Modsrx, its not in the carb, there is no spark there when it runs on 2 cylinders, cant be a fuel or carb problem as they dont have anything to do with the spark. Reeds are good as well.

the reason I wouldnt put too much hunt into a stator is because with adding temp they get weaker, not the other way around, and the stator cant pick out 1 cylinder to cut spark too, its simply a power supply for the whole machine.

That was my thinking to Don, No issues with electrical power at all, everything works very well, hand warmers, lights, no flickering or anything. Thats whats making me lean towards the cdi... gonna try and get a used one just hard finding the dam thing lol

So ive been looking, best thing ive found so far is this:
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-8DN-85540-30-00.html?gclid=CLrzt8v5pqUCFUS5KgodQkT9Iw
I just put the part number in google, thats what I found, just wondering if anyone has heard of these guys before or has had dealings with them? Just seems weird how a boating site would have a snowmobile cdi lol.

Yes, i've ordered parts from boats.net before. ordered my stator and a rear heat exchanger for my 02 viper from them. Have a few more parts on order now. Good prices and had no issues with them whatsoever.
before you order a new one I would check with at least a couple of members here!!!
viperlover
and
viperking
both of them part a LOT of sleds..... I'm sure if you PM them, one of them is bound to have the CDI your looking for!!!
I have viperlover's phone number...... if you want it PM me he is a really cool guy, very very willing to help out any member of TY!!!!
