Poor fitting BOSS Seat

Hah, I just got in from installing mine and was going to start a thread with the same complaint. There was a 11/16" gap between the tank and the seat. I pretty disappointed. There was no way that such a major purchase should look so bad, even if they are just about ride and weight would it really kill them to try their best in all areas including fit/looks? Either way I got out the router and the dremel tool and routed 3/4" of foam out. Now it fits pretty well, however I noticed in the process of taking the foam out that the fabric around the zipper is fraying away everywhere and getting caught in the zipper. Also they put there velcro on so far to the outside that it can be seen sticking out when you look at the sled from the side. Finally, the #^%$^$ $40 LED tail light. I bought this option because I was assuming that for that price the wiring would just plug into the factory tail light plug and avoid hacking and slashing my wiring and being able to unplug the seat to remove it. WRONG. Since the fit is obviously an issue for all their customers, why wouldn't they just reset their CNC machine to a more accurate sizing to give their customers a better fit product (plus it would weigh even less with the extra foam removed if they want to claim that they only care about weight, haha), or do to their lack of competition, do they even care? Anyway, I am pretty disappointed with what you get out of BOSS for $500 (a.k.a. pretty much a full week of work), but I wanted a seat that was easier to stand up from and more rider forward and unfortunately that is my only option. Hopefully it at least lasts...

what are the differences between the viper fuel tank and the SRX? i feel like a chump now, cause i told viperking i would buy his viper tank, but the whole point in doing so, was to get a better fit!! grrr.....

The only difference between the two are the two screws on top of the srx tank that the seat loops too. Other than that I am sure they are identical in size and shape.

I just put a new one on and it fits the same with a 1" gap. I thought about heating up the contoured area where it hits the tank with a heat gun then shoving it on and try to get it molded correctly, but like others said.... I didn't have the balls to do it. My luck I'd catch it on fire or something! I don't think it looks that bad anyway, and what a difference with the new seat and 3" riser!

For what it's worth . . .

The key to cutting foam is to use a heated knife. Once the knife is hot enough, it cuts like butter. Plus it helps the edge of the cut adhere to itself so that it doesn't fray. Just trim to fit, and you guys should be a lot happier. This is all there is to it.

or the other option is the mister twister electric filet knife... i will trim it to fit come spring. i am not gonna mess with it now! :letitsnow

The reason I ordered one for my son is that both I and my wife love our Boss seats. However I did bolt down the seat in 4 locations as well as using the velcro. I will not give up my seat, it is just that good. Could it fit better, yes. I do wish it had some other color also, but that is not going to happen. I will remove my son's and store in shipping box, save for another day or another sled. Al

I don't find the velcro to be a big issue. It keeps the seat in place. and is pretty much impossible to move unless you pull up, which I can't see being an issue while riding.

They should make the tank filler cap loop out of Nyon mesh so it won't tear.
I want the ride height of the Boss, and am talking to a local uphosterer who is going to use the stock seat, and build it up 4" and sculpt the top narrower to look like a Boss, and also blend the seat into the tank.

He tentatively quoted me $175. I just hate to chop up a perfect seat so I'm looking for another seat to hack up....

The viper tank does not have the 2 large head screws on the top of it where the srx and non powervalve sled seats attach in the front to the tank, the only thing left on the tank is the flange where the seat butts to the tank. The shape is identical otherwise

i rode 150 miles yesterday, and 75 the day before. i had 0 issues with the fact the seat is held in place on the tunnel with velcro. simple, yet very effective! i love the new riding position, but i think a 4" riser would be a better fit, rather than the 2" i put on.

All I can say is those seats must be comfy. For the price, fit and look "Boss" is not the word I would use to describe them. Butt ugly is what I see. I'm glad you guys like them and hope they do what you want butt boss would only be on one of my sleds if I were blind.

Mounted my seat a couple of days ago. Had to trim some foam and now it fits pretty good. I have to say, IMO the Boss seat looks killer on the Viper. I hope it rides as good as it looks...

It rides great! I can live with the not-really-perfect fitting, the seat is totally wonderful to ride!

The second best mod for my MM700, after the PP-skis.

For only $399 i got myself a "new" sled! :-D

Pictures of my daughters viper with a boss seat, I used a nitro tail light and sunk it into the foam. Seat just doesn't fit very good to the tank. I need to rmove the cover and cut some foam next time it is off, it makes the loop on the tank fit too tight. Seat rides great though.
I have a mono shock skid to install this year and a 1in cobra with 168 carbides, just in case I would like to ride it to remember why I have a four stroke.

mdbauer62, I had a seat riser made that fits over the original seat without altering it. So if I want to go back to stock, it's not a problem. You can check it out in an older thread: http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=64300&page=1&pp=10&highlight=summer+project+expert

I have not seen or heard of any filler neck loops which have torn or even damaged at all. I have 3 Boss seats not one issue at all. I know some people don't like the cost, I don't either but I would definatley buy again. Al

Stephg - Nice Job on your sled. Good to see a Yamaha last that long and look that good!! It's why I ride Yammi's! I like the idea of the the seat pad over the top of the stock seat. Does it want to slide side-to-side at all, or is it stable on the seat? How do you hold it down? I built a 4" riser to see if I like the raised seating position, but I really want to add more foam to my seat for more comfort. The riser is almost done, I will post pics when complete. The next challenge is to figure a way to fill the gap at the front of the seat...
