I got a chance to ride today and it's pretty nice. Higher rpm powerband than I'm used to tho as it doesn't get moving til about 5k ( from a stop , ) . Also it's gonna need some clutch work i think as there is some squealing / squeaking Coming from the clutch/ belt area. It has an slp silencer on it now but I'm gonna switch back to stock to see how it sounds.
When at a stop it takes a good 3/8 on the throttle before it goes, but the rest of the way it rips pretty good.. Would it be a belt? clutch issue?
Also Still wondering what the max lug I could put on this thing would be, without modding anything.. Im hoping for 1 1/4 ripsaw

LIFE MEMBER ONLY ONCE!!!
Take a look at the primary clutch to see if the spring is broken inside.Invest in a good clutch puller, not them cheap ones that break inside the clutch as another member on here is still struggling with to get out.Look up the tech section for your sled specs and compare to see what is in your clutches for weights, rivets ,springs and helix.Belt squeal is a common issue if your belt is to tight also, can be adjusted by removing the 3 bolts on backside of secondary clutch and then removing or adding .5 or 1.o mm washers to get belt to raise or lower in that clutch.Of course it would be nice to have your clutches aligned and off set set proper to.Be ready to invest in a few important tools.
There are also some mods one can do for the 700 SX,like 1 layer gasket mod, reed notch, drill out stock exhaust can..etc.It is in the tech section also.Check your bearings thruout, look for any broken parts in the skid that may need a fix.And you should clean your carbs out good to.There is a couple write ups with pics also in the tech section. And when you get stumped..you can go to the search button and type in what you are looking for.If that isn't good enough..then come back here and ask the guys..they are ready to help..GOOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks guys for the quick response and the link.. Sorry about not searching first, I know I should have
Ill get some pics and vids up tomorrow and hopefully you can see and or hear what Im talking about.. I had an SLP silencer on , but I put the stock can back in.. Its a little quieter but this sled just seems to be a screamer , which isnt necessarily a bad thing i guess, just different.. Its been 10 yrs since Ive even rode a sled , so I was reeeallly hoping I just didnt buy a lemon.. It also has a brand new motor , installed by a dealer, so Im hoping I can get some life out of it.. I also need to stiffen up the rear suspension a bit as well as the front preload.. But for now , it reeeeallly needs a track.. Its just destroyed and I get no hook up at all
So being so new to the game ( again ) Ill do my research on here and see what I can come up with.. I swapped the new belt with an older semi worn Yamaha belt to see if that changes anything or takes care of the problem.. The spring in the primary seemed ok so Ill have to dig a little deeper after Christmas.. Do I like it , Hell yea, would I trust it on a 20 mile ride alone, hell no.. THATS what i need to get out of this.. Reliabilty, Even tho it seems to run good , theres something that just doesnt seem right

You won't be dissapointed for sure in buyin a yammy. I would bet your squeel is a worn out primary spring. I would bet it only does it after you rode it for a minute or so but not when first started for the day. I had the same issue a while back. Also you can get an 1 1/4 track on with no problems but won't be able to stud it however with the right track i see no need for studs myself. Good luck i have never seen a lemon Yamaha just some that didn't get taken care of! look after it and u will ride it forever.

Thanks man, I really like it.. Even tho its older and nothing fancy, I still have fun, even by myself , and thats all the matters right??

Ive been riding since 9 this morning.. I took off the new belt that was on it ( some cheaper aftermarket , that had a little bit of glazing, but it didnt seem like it was grabbing the entire belt ) and but on a older Yamaha belt that was about 40-50% worn.. Drove for a good 2 hrs and didnt hear the noise once... Kind of a band aid fix, but it works for now I guess

Dont worry about that squeal, i just let mine break in. You just have to but the shims back in anyway after your belt wears down a bit. Just my 2cents on the belt squeal. I ride vipers but SRX guys around here will be able to help you a ton get that clutch dialed in for sure. Blue and the rest of them now their stuff.
Yea I've been reading alot of their thread in the tech section and the link in post 2. Lots of good helpful info there.
I'm trying to upload a few vids of me on a startup and a quick ride but they are taking forever. The ride vid is 200 Meg and has been downloading for an hour. -1 for country 1.5 Meg Internet

Ha Yea , I just work long hrs so I go whenever I get a chance.. Not only that , but All my friends have 144s and love breaking trails and powder, which is something the SX does NOT do well .. especially with a near bald track with missing lugs
Well yet another little annoyance .. First startup.. I let it warm up for about 5 minutes, then start riding taking it easy for the first mile or 2, but even in that time, it will backfire out of the exhaust.. Its not really even a backfire, just a little pop that clearly is louder than the exhaust, but not quite a big backfire pop.. It doesnt stall or anything , but it seems a little boggy until about 5k rpm, then it smooths out and seems fine
Any ideas?
Carbs, jets and the throttle tension are on the list so far, as well as a look at the clutch to see if I need anything for that as well .. I think it just needs a little overhaul and tune up.. I can tell it has potential, but some things need to be cleaned and / or adjusted

Well when it pops and stuff it should be the carbs...they need cleaned every yr.
The pilots alway clog.
between the bad gas these days and the dirty carbs make it hard for things to run right.
Everyone wants to just put gas in and go.....
I would say clean & adjust your carbs and report back....
Info is in my link....

Just curious.. Since the popping goes away when the sled is warm, ( afaik for now ) is that still a carb/jet issue?

I would say yes. I bet your pilots are clogged...they are a pita. I am trying something out this year to see if it works so the pilots don't clog...hope it works...
Anyhow popping is usually carb fuel issues

Well Ill get that taken care of next week, and am hoping for the best, cuz I really wanna get out and ride
Im assuming 91 is recommended for these sleds? not 87, or ethanol 87?
I always run the higher octane I can get, and yes its a carb issue (plug/dirty jets). I am pretty anal about my sleds, I will clean before I go for another ride. Carb cleaning, grease skid, bearings, clutch cleaning and chaincase oil is on my bible. Never go riding without that kidn of maintance....JMO
