a welding question

I took my carbs off today for some cleaning,my idle was running kinda fast.2 pilots were basically plugged up.I am going to switch to 45's from the 42.5 anyways.Now I noticed on my jackshaft were the bearing is on the clutch side that the plate that holds the bearing from the inside has cracked around he circumference of 1 side.If I loosen the 2 bolts that hold it together and get that plate back to flat again..can I tac weld it tofor the time being.?Don't feel like taing the the chaincase apart,gears,bearings and sliding the jackshaft back in order to remove it and replace it now.If I tac it up in a few places,it should rally hold to next spring I am thinking.What you guys think? Thanks.
 
You could tack weld it. I would be concerned about the heat getting to the bearing and seals. I've seen a few people cut out a section over top of the bearing and then make a piece to bolt accross just like on the chain case side. Saves you from removing the chain case
 
its def worth a try ... i had a bearing carrier in a tranny crack almost all the way around i removed the bearing and tig welded it and im still plowing with the truck to this day...

because u do to mutch ditch jump and fall is not because your motor is powerfull lolll :rofl:
 
its the torque mod..its the torque,,I was ditch jumping today actually.I will try and tack weld it on the shaft.I would have to cut out such a large portion of the support that I would lose the alignment position of the bolt holes.I can pull it away from the bearing enough.Just have to cover the fuel pump and lines good with some thick aluminum foil so no sparks nail my lines.Plus cover the whole engine area just in case.I do not want to..and I repeat..I do not want to start taking chaincase apart,gears,bearings,brake..etc.To much work for just that plate.If it were a jackshaft that was wrecked..then a different story.I have a spare sled to ride anyways.
 
don't want to spend the time pulling everything now.Will plug the fuel lines,cover all areas that a spark could make a hole in and that plate can be moved back away from the bearing.It is cracked about 1.5 inches around..a few good tacks should do it.
If you don't hear from me anymore..it is because I caught the sled on fire,blew up the tank...then ignited my fuel containers of gas on the garage,garage started to burn and then the house..Oh well..chance I am willing to take i guess to ride.
 
I would be worried about what caused it to crack in the first place.
  • Did it ever get really hot by burning a jackshaft bearing up?
  • Did your engine mounts fail at any point?
  • Did it ever get run without the bolts tightened?
  • Is or was your jackshaft ever bent?
In normal operation that part should not be stressed that much.

If the root cause still exists, then there is likely enough stress to break other parts once you strengthen this part.
 
metal fatigue I assume.I got it spot welded for now until next summer..Bearing is good,no play anywere at all.Damn SXR's just have to much torque I guess..lol
 
CARBS ARE CLEAN ,45 pilots installed,carbs on the bench.To tired to do any work tonight.2 days of intense riding..near death experiences,digging out sleds that got stuck...has taken it's toll on me.Just waiting for the large amounts of snow they are calling for..up to 33 cms..we'll see.....
 
sorry, was being a smart a@#. every post on here seems to say to clean the carbs. Sorry just frustrated with my Yammy today> lost the center cylinder

well its the start of the season thats why you see many post with carb cleaning
 
don't be sorry about cleaning carbs.Sorry to hear that for your sled.This season for a lot of guys is going to be a rough one with cylinders burning down..It's not just about cleaning carbs..but the crap in the gas is the issue.No one is going to clean carbs every time before they go out.I guess the 2 strokes will be phasing out soon if this keeps happening.

Come on doug we both no the reason the flange is cracked!!Yes metal fatigue from the bearing going dry and blowing itself apart takeing out the jackshaft with it??And some repeated hard lanches trying to find out why it was bogging!Ended up the belt was not being pulled tight because the centre to centre was off.If i do remember right,yes?

Best advice you could give some of these guys that are new to matenance on there sleds are to remove the outer seal on there jackshaft/speedo shafts with a sharp pick carefully on the outer edge and pack them with grease every year right on the sled and this will never happen!
