exciter SX

I was wondering the same thing....because the stock yamaha is a cast piston, the weisco's are forged and are much stronger...why shouldn't us exciter guys use them, whats the downfall????
 
If I recall correctly, the Yamaha pistons have stronger skirts and hold tighter tolerances. You'll have to confirm that with another member, my mind is coated in Teflon some times.....
 
the only thing I've herd that actually makes sense ...is the weisco's are forged ...so they have tighter tolerances and therfore you need to warm up the engine properly , or you might cold seize it, due to the fact that the cylinder must warm up and expand as much as the piston which warms up quicker. That in mind the piston will expand quicker with less tolerance making it very tight until the cylinders warm up to match....can someone confirm this , or am I off the page here..... any comments to add would help all of us on this topic of pistons ...Forged pistons have tighter tolerances because they expand less....so they are tight when cold.....Thats what I understand, but could be wrong....

weisc's make a piston for the 570 exciter engine....they have no sx piston avail....I called them and they said not to worry , they are the same dimensions as stock. I'm still not sure what the diffrence is on an exciter piston and the sx piston. If weisco says there the same , I believe them, there are not a cheap company. If anyone can tell what the diffrence is .,..I'm listening....I let my sled warm up and have zero issues. there is so many reasons why peaple have engine failure ...I do agree that they expand quicker, but that snot a bad thing if you warm it up properly. They also handle detonation better than stockers. The stockers will pinch the ring with detonation in no time. Weisco's also , but can take the detonation longer. I m told anyways.....Anyone else add to this......
 
BIG DEFFERENCE IN A STANDARD EXCITER AND A EXCITER SX CLY. KEEP IN MIND THE EXCITER SX HAD ALOT MORE COMPRESSION THAN A STANDARD EXCITER. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
I know, I'm talking pistons.......yamaha claims a diffrent part number for exciters and excitersx whats the diff....weisco has only one piston for both, but said the sx piston is dimensionally identical....and as I stated above but had backwards...a forged piston expands less than a cast piston. so the overal clearance is tighter becasue it wont expand as much....better overall, but because its so tigh, u need to warm up and expand the cylinder befor driving her hard , or risk cold seizure...... so In my eyes the wiesco piston is better period......just my 2 cents....
 
The oem rings are far better than wisecos hands down. the wiseco rings need to be changed very frequently and are hard on the cylinders.
 
Primary Spring

i have a primary spring thats black with a white piece of paint on it for my SX is it better then stock or no???

I like all the help and opinion s on this topic, but can anyone give concrete reasons for your choice of yamaha pistons...just trying to guage the weisc's issues...if they are real or just a bad rep from people rebuilding engines that don't know what their doing.... I'm a beleiver in factory parts...thats for sure, but weisco' s are not a cheap aftermarket company out to save u dollars....they are a piston manufacturer that makes quality pistons, more so for racing engines. So when someone says ah their junk dont use them.....That doesnt tell me much. Basically your saying forged pistons are no good vs the cast stocker . Well sorry guys , but a forged piston is tougher, more stable due to tighter tolerances, and stronger overall....so why are they not a good choice....??? At least phazorguy gave me a reason wheather its true or not....is to be determined...never herd that before...could be true.... I change rings out every couple of seasons anyways so thats not a concern for me...
 
pistons

I talked to the dealer here in southern Canada (A) and they said alot of guys switched back to stock pistons in yamahas.
 
FROM WHAT I SAW OVER THE YEARS, THEY WORKED GREAT IN THE OLD IRON BORE FREE AIRS YEARS AGO. TERRIBLLE IN THE YAMMIE LIQUIDS. TODAY MOST USE THEM FOR BIG BORE PISTONS OR SLEEVE APP. OEM ALL THE WAY IF YA CAN. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
oem it is next time I guess. I put in the weisco pro lites this season...and so far so good, compression at 145 and 147...no noise , broke in after just one short 1/2 hour ride. Not sure what problems I might have , but I guess time will tell...thanks guys....
