I am looking stay on top with the skipoos and kitty craps. I have an 02 Viper with 151" track and bender pipes. Clutching is Yamaha stuff and is running strong and fast as i think it can with this setup.

I am looking for ideas in terms of increasing power and decreasing weight to make the sled faster yet?

What are your opinions on best bang for buck?

Lightweight skid?
Head mod?
Billet head?
Coring out track?
Taking 1/2 clips off track?
light weight trailing arms?
light weight hub/rotor?
reed spacers?
 
All the above,, but its gonna be more bucks than bang............Id start with the skid..............
 
are the rails with holes in them worth it, or just all the chromoly replacement parts such as what MPI or Hartman sell?

I am thinking this route is cheaper than buying new. Plus these sleds pull hard and are reliable to start with.
 
If you are running a yamaha skid, you'd be better off getting a different skid from a different manufacturer, and save close to 20lb....... they area pretty available in stock form as the mountain guys like to update to specialty skids in the 151" and beyond.......

get a Mseries skid - gona save you a lot of weight.
port your track - like said above, a light track is a fast track.
and if your really worried about weight, you can build your own hood. i've seen people make mesh hoods that weigh like 5-10 lbs.
 
thanks guys, i am looking at porting the track. Last night i talked to a guy that had an 08 Doo with a stock ported track and 2011 Doothat came without the ported track. He said the non-ported track stayed on top of the powder much better.

I guess if you put enough holes in a boat it will sink! But I think if i don't go crazy with the porting i will drop weight and not sink too much.

Whats the install of an M-Series skid like? Is this something most mechanically inclined people could figure out?
 
Well do you want to keep it a 151 or go to a 162? I have a template to put the cat skid in a viper, i did the 153 skid, setback to a 162.

However, it has been said you can run a 141 skid setback to a 151 by just swapping 141 rails onto my 153 skid, however i can not confirm nor deny this claim.

I have done a 02short track to 153 cat skid install and a 04 mtn viper to the same cat skid install so I am fairly knowledgeable on the subject.

Thanks dirtjumper for the insight on skids. I am thinking if i pull the skid maybe i should consider a 162 track. I don't think it would be a problem on a piped viper, especially if i were to add a billet head for extra cooling. If i go to a cat skid, i would need to change my drivers would I? I may not be running as long of a paddle as possible either. I am not sure if I have a 2" or if it is slightly longer.
 
Most 162 tracks are 3" pitch. That is what I am running. For drivers, i am running 7 tooth 3" pitch drivers that are cnc machined from plastic. I am able to run a 2.25" track with these drivers, and it does not hit the front exhanger. Some people say you can not do this, so i am unsure how they say this as I have ran the setup for ~500 miles i would guess. Look in my signature at my mods. I did lots of these to complement others.
 
awesome, i just checked the camoplast site and saw they are mostly all 3" as opposed to the 2.52" that i beleive i am currently running.

Is you sled for sale dirtjumper?
 
I bought my 2004 MNTViper with all the mods done. The previous owner had snow checked a MNT Nitro and needed the $$$$$. It use to have NITROUS but I had the guy remove it before I took the sled, Peak Heads- 3 sets of doems to match the porting for different elevations, Lowel Horning porting, CPR pipes that I sent out and got ceramic coated, 2" x156 ported track. I installed a set of Ohlins in the rear. I too looked at a new rear suspension, but I havent found the time to ride much so I stayed stock right now.

Mesh hood, new tunnel, new rear suspension, light weight front end parts will all help, plus the other posting..go on a diet...that was funny.

I know I would need to now as I was a fit 215 lb guy to being a out-of shape 248. Wouldnt matter anyhow, most of my buddies all ride turboed APEX's or Nitros. Doesnt hurt that a good buddy is the Yamaha dealer-but I LOVE my TRIPLE 2-STROKE
 
Yes my sled is for sale. I am not trying that hard however. It runs way too good, and have too much money tied up in it, so I am enjoying it while i still live in snow country. I am anticipating i am moving to the South West US in December, so it will have to go sooner or later.

I found an 07 M-series 153 skid and an 09 153 M Series skid. How much performance difference might i see between the 3. The dealer wants $500 for the 07 and $700 for the 09.

What sor of mounting bracket mods will I need to do?
 
I think the 05-07 skids are the same, the 08+ have the fox float shocks, so there is no torsion spring. AS far as i know, the mounting measurements are the same. The 08+ skids save even more weight than my skid.

The front bracket, use the stock front viper mountain mounting location. (it is different that the Short track viper location)

For the rear bracket, i made a set of custom mounts out of 1/2" aluminum plate. They were made using a lap joint, so the mounting surface for the skid was the same width as the tunnel.

Also on the front arm, you need to make, or have made two shoulder'd bushings, or use a stack of washers between the tunnel and the front torque arm upper mount. This is becase the cat skid is ~5/8" or 3/4" narrower than the Yamaha tunnel. You would have to measure the skid to make sure, as i forgot the exact width measurement.

I will try and link a couple threads for you to read over about this swap. One should have the file with all of this mounting measurements.
