I picked up a sled a few months ago for prety much nothing, but the motor was removed, clutch disassembled, needed stator changed...etc...
My original plan was to just part it out, and keep the clutch for another project, but the more I looked at it, I wanted to see if I could get her going once more...
Anyway I tinkered around for a week or so, and got it fired up! The girlfriend sat on it and liked the size and riding position better than her current sled, of course.... But she wanted to drive it first, and I wanted to know if it would keep running before I sold hers.
We're like a block from the trails in town, and I have no yard or trailer, so I thought lets take a short ride, see how it runs and drives, etc. We bundled up our 6 year old, packed up a tow rope, fired up the SRX to follow, and headed out.
I said we would go out about a mile and come back, it was pretty cold anyway, We made it a mile out, stopped and talked about keeping this sled, and headed home. Well we made it about 1/4 mile from the house and she got pulled over by a cop and warden.
NOT REGISTERED YET!!!
We explained the situation, all our sleds are always legal, but we needed to test drive before we spent the $70 or whaterver ro register...
TOO BAD!
$200+ ticket!
He even offered to make the ticket out to the previous owner, since it was last registered to him in 2009!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever happened to common sense, and treating every situation accordingly? I guess they have to play it by the book because their bosses have no faith in them?

Anyways I'm keeping the sled, registered it just like I was planning.

Look at it this way. It could be worse. In my town I would have received the ticket for not being registered and another ticket for operating within "city limits". Sorry, it's the best I could do for an optomistic perspective.
 
haha, i got pulled over once, rode my sled across the street to get gas in it. didn't put a helmet on. he pulled me over, said i was...

A. Speeding
B. No helmet
C. Headlight Covers
D. Noise from my exhaust was too loud
E. Regestration was in the wrong place
F. Trail permit was in the wrong place.

Got away wit no ticket but a police escort back to my place at a resonable speed :)
 
I just got one for not having a "safety certification card" with me. I told the officer we had been registering the sled in WI since '97 and I had never gotten anything with a new sticker that said I'd need safety certification. Apparently if you are 25 you still need one. $175 ticket, he said he was going to write on the ticket that it should be dropped to $50 if I complete the online course by the court date. I went straight home and did it, scored a 90% without even looking at the crap they want you to read. It's $15, so if you don't know about this people, check it out!!
 
WI used to make their tags with "heat activated adhesive". yes, that’s right. You had to borrow the wife’s blow dryer and put them on that way. I was at a buddy’s house and he had to put them on but decided to wait because we didn’t have wives (or rock and roll ponytails) so no blow dryer. went 4 miles down the trail and got stopped by a "private investigator". Wrote him a ticket for some ridiculous amount. I cant remember.

Now the DNR got smart and put normal adhesive on them.

Zero tolerance means never to have to think for yourself anymore.

...remember, it's for the chilern.
 
If they used common sense, they wouldn't get as much of your hard earned money, and isn't thet the whole point of their existance. That's what my experienceswith them have been all about anyway.
 
I was pulling the sled home on Sunday evening driving down I35w in past downtown Minneapolis. Doin' 70 in a 55. A cop pulled alongside me and flashed his lights and motioned for me to pull over. I pulled over and he pulled up and rolled his window down and yelled at me to drive slower and then sped off. I lucked out that time!!

If I'm not mistaken, in Michigan any vehicle pulling a trailer must abide by the posted truck speed limit of 55mph.

I've gone past many a state trooper going 75ish in a 70 zone while hauling a trailer so I don't know if I'm lucky or the cop just didn't want to bother.

Not saying that that is or isn't a law but I have never heard of that one before. Sounds like someone might of been pulling your leg.
 
Yup, Know the deal. WDNR, Wisconsin Department Of No Return. They don't give a F. Buddy of mine that had a bunch of vintage sleds (76,77,78, SRX, 78 RXL, 78 RXL mod kit, Centurian, TXL, TXL RXL mod, TXL RXL Centurian mod and more (not a rich guy either). Took his 76 out on the lake in front of his little cabin one day just to give it some run time as it hadn't been out in 3 years. Saw a couple of sleds sitting out in the middle, stopped to say hi and see if everything was OK with them (looked like they were having trouble). They were. One sled was a DNR guy and the other was getting a ticket. My buddy did too. $200 for non registration on a sled that was close to 30 years old and hadn't been ridden it 3 years. DNR guy oogled and awwed over the sled then wrote him up................

And they wonder why knowone likes them and they get no respect.

I've talked to a few here and there on the trails. Never had a good experiance. Even though I've tried.

I know what they run for sleds in this neck of the woods and they arn't fast enough to catch what I ride. I won't stop for them.

No respect for those that pay their saleries??? No respect for them........................................................................................!!!!!!

My opinion on the WDNR.

MN DNR is not much better! There is guy by our cabin in NE MN, I have heard that he was transfered there from western MN because of death threats. I can tell you I can see why there would be, he has been a total prick since being there! Once we were out fishing and pulled up to check or licenses and the first thing he did was to NOT so subtly flip his jacket to reveal his holstered gun, what an ***!! Since he has been there, he has stopped me several times. I've never had a ticket from him, but he just doesn't know how to have pleasant conversation, and I've tried...

ny isnt much better i crossed from our feild to the barn an got a ticket for no helmet an no regi no insurance 750 dollars for crossin the road becuase i had the rumble pack on my 700 an he hated how loud it was

I think that technically is the law in many states, but for the most part nobody cares to enforce it.

That may be the reason that Uhaul trailers have the 55 speed limit in reverse on the fenders. Either that or their lawyers made them put that there. LOL
 
opsled, I've out run a 488 indy trail police sled down south here at one time on my 87 indy trail on a lake because I didn't want to deal with them. yes, he had a blue flashing light, but his sled was not fast enough, and I didn't pay enough attention to "notice" him.

I have to say I have the same feelings as you do about the DNR patrols.

I thought the registration was only for trails and that dinking on the lake did not constitute a need for a trail registration? All 4 of our sleds are registered, buit I need to look at the law.

As a matetr of fact, years ago, after the hood on the old trail was destroyed and I was tuning the motor for the different pipe on it, I was on a WI lake with no trail, and the cop only told me I needed a running light to be legal. I understand that fully. I duct taped the bulb to the airbox and he said it was OK then. I don't know, maybe I found one of the only decent sled cops?

Here is a quick and handy guide to towing laws in all states and provinces. MOST are just the regular posted limit. Some have a specific speed for trailers, and some are weight dependent. (keep in mind this is just what is specified in the state regulations, there are most likely roads or sections that are posted differently based on condtions.)

The reason for the U haul speed limit is that technically most trailer tires are only speed rated up to 55 or 60 mph anyway. That and general safety of someone who probably has never towed a trailer in their life.

I got a no registration ticket last season in the U.P. It was rediculously expensive, and im think i could have registered my sled 4 times for the price of the ticket. Moral of the story now is i have registration.

wi tags used to have heat activated adheasives on them. you needed a heat gun or a blow dryer to get them to adequately stick. you could get away with it by not heating them, but they would come off from time to time. You wouldnt know that unless you read the small print on the back. They went more conventional a couple years ago i think.
