My first impressions after riding 2011 apex and nytro xtx

I'll post this here since I don't wanna make another threadthat turns into a bi&@h fest.

We had the yamaha demo days today up at the island lake inn in Duluth mn. I rode the apex se, apex xtx, the nytro rtx and the nytro xtx.

IMO. They are all crap on the trail. They just seem to tippy. I'm used to sleds that are planted to the ground. Especially the the skis but these sleds seemed all over the place. Yes I was riding pretty aggressive but that's what I can compare to. Ski doo is leaps and bounds ahead of yamaha in trail riding and chassis

This might start an argument but I hope not
As for performance. We took the sleds across the road to a wide open lake then on a 25 mile trail ride. There were tons of 600 and 800 gades there all riding the yamaha for the demo day. Once they were done they got on their sleds ran on the lake with a apex xtx and a nytro xtx and ran to 80-85. The gade 600 got the jolesjot on everyone thenthe apex and nytro pulled ahead quickly being reeled in by the 800. At about an 1/8 mile the 800 was pulling fast on everyone. Followed by the 600 then apex then nytro. They did multiple rolling runs like this.

As for a conclusion the nytro was a tiny tiny bit quicker thanthe etec 600. But like I said they only ran to 80 and the apex only held "close" NOT EVER pulling on the apex from a roll or a dig. The etec 800 is impressive and shockingly quiet. But I don't see EVER how a apex could win a race against an etec. It pulled in every type of run and kept going. The conditions on the lake were groomed with about a 12" base. No sled had picks or mods. The miles on the apex was 1300 on the xtx and 720 on the nytro

Not dogging yamaha as I'm actually considering buying one. But they need to reduce the weight somehow and need to work on rider position and chassis. IMO the nytro is a horrible trail sled. But seems like it would be a fun ditch banger or jumper but after riding etecs they all feel like tanks. With yamaha you feel gravity while the doos ride like they defy it

I have a chance at the end of Febuary to demo the 2011 Apex's,Nytro's..etc also.I just might go and see for myself how they feel.I know I didn't like the way they feel when I sat on them in the showroom.I Yamaha keeps screwing around and not drop weight and raise power..I am afraid a lot of guys will go to the Etec..

Do the demo for sure! It was fun none the less. And interesting to see how yamahas $14,000 sled rides. The apex xtx and the power steering is awesome on the trail. Feels just like a grand touring ;)


I would actually consider buying the nytro. They didn't have a fx nytro so I rode the rtx which was fun and quick , but the xtx nytro would be better IMO for my type of riding. They are all nice but it didn't give me the wow factor like " I don't even need to look at another sled. Thus is the one " feeling.
 
I Really like the new Apex seating and I love the seating position of the nytro for trail riding. I suppose the tippiness in the corners will depend on the type of trails and how fast you are going for the conditions. Also, Keep in mind that these are demo sleds and suspensions are not set for each individual, i thik the idea is to feel how the motor works and a general idea of the ride, once you get the sled and dial in the suspension features to your self, it then becaomes a totally different Animal.
 
I think it REALLY depends on what type of riding you do. if you are a high mileage groomed trail rider I think the apex is tough to beat. I like the idea of the new doos, but with a friend that works for them he thinks they are not built as well as they used to be. and my biggest problem is that they are a 2 stroke with a pricetag of the 4. they will still have the inherent crank and rebuild issues. but like I said, I am a groomed trail rider and want a sled for 10k+ miles. but I will say, if they were cheaper the xp would be a nice sled. dealer my friend works at has an 09 leftover for $7999. if I had the cash it sure would be tempting!!
 
Not fair to compare a 4 stroke with a 2 stroke. Two completly diferent thing in my opinion.

I will buy a 4 stroke no questions asked but the wallet and winters being crappy and short keep me from doing it.....But I will start looking for an 07-08 in the next few years....

Ski-doo can't even keep belts from exploding ever few hundred miles, let alone the motor. You buy a doo & it will be at the dealer, not in your garage.
 
For myself the experience was significantly different than the original poster, but that does not make his experience any less real for him.

Everyone needs to ride the sleds and judge for themselves. Everybody has different riding attitude, style, and expectations.

I strongly urge others to try the sleds for themselves, don't go by my impression or anyone else's for that matter. You may very well have a much different impression then the one you might be reading.

I too always wonder about setup whenever I hear of impressions that drastically differ across the brands. They all make good machines today, and being machines they all have potential for failures

Test and find the one that is right for you.
 
Doo has everything so lightened up that you can now buy aftermarket braces to strengthen the front end up to where it should have been in the first place.There is such a thing as too light.I would suggest that most of the bad handling that you experienced could be adjusted out of it.Not too many sleds right out of the crate will fit everyones riding style.

There was a good post on HCS about a week ago.The usual about how heavy the 4-strokes are and a guy posts and says "My wife weighs 110 lbs. and has no problem handling her Nytro".LMFAO.
 
i went from a couple Mountain Max 700's to a Apex Mountain and put 10" simmons skis on it and it is the easiest and funnest sleds to ride. I ride with doo's and cats and we switch sleds when we ride, all my buddies have new M8's and Crossfire 8's and E-teks and they love my sled, when i jump on theirs they seem gutless and hard to control, remember everyone has their own opinion, but i really dont miss dumping in oil, Cheers
 
I've ridden pretty much all the demo yamahas through 2010 models (except the efi 1050 vectors/ venture) , and yeah, they are different than the competition.

Now last year I tested the just released ltd production 2011 etec 800 racer replica, and I was very impressed with it. It definitely felt faster than any apex, and had more grunt than the nytros. I still really like the yamaha's, but that 800 etec R whatever it was was crazy fast, smooth and handled well.

on which yamaha I should look into in the future...
I rode a phazer and a Nytro on the weekend..both were far superior then
my Viper..doesn't mean I don't love my Viper, I just know 4stroke power
is here to stay and it works!!!
But...after my ride...both me and a buddy confirmed we love the positionng of the Phazer and performance of the Nytro...
How does the Nytro XTX and Apex XTX compare side to side? Which would you prefer between the two? or even between the standard Nytro vs Apex?

Have you even driven an e-tech? I have 4 buds with them. They are the twitchiest; worst vibrating ; poor throttle response sleds ever. Yamaha has raised power huge from 2010 to 2010...if you rode 1 of these also you would know that.
How can u make these comments on sleds you have never even ridden????
 
When I hear someone say their yamaha rides bad and or handles poorly when new, I now just assume they are telling the truth. Not sure WTF yamaha is doing but they have not been selling ready to go sleds for a long time. Once they are set up, revalved, etc... they are great and they dont need a Cank dispencer on the back.

While I have yet to ride the apex xtx, I have ridden the nytros in RTX, std, and the XTX, and 121" apex, attak, and apex LTX 136". All of these sleds were over the last several years of iterations, and retuned/ reconfigurations. Of those sleds, I would take a nytro over any of the apexes. That's my style of riding though.

Yes, the 800 etec XRS or whatever I rode last feb as an 2011 sled had a bit of a vibe at idle, but after that it was spot on. I do agree that yamahas need tweaking to get them to ride and handle right though.

I owned a nytro xtx & now have an apex xtx. The only think the nytro does better is severe ditchbanging.
