How much oil do you burn per tank of gas? I am going through a quart. Is this normal?

I believe the ideal ration for Yamaha two stroke engines is the consumption of 50 parts gas to 1 part oil. I like to run my engine closer to 45 to 1, the idea being slightly more oil is better than less. It sounds like you are running at a ratio of about 40 to 1 so you could adjust the oil cable to deliver slightly less oil. If you do make an adjustment, make small adjustments and watch the oil consumption carefully.

Agree w/ Jim....Especially on.......'the idea being slightly more oil is better than less'.....especially on the PTO SIDE. My cable had to go all the way out to 23.5mm to achieve a ratio of about 48 to 1. Took alot of time and exact measuring for me to come to that approximate measurement. Running thin full syn though.

To brad, from what I have ben lead to beleive when pump fails it delivers oil as if WOT all the time. I would suspect that is your problem,as well as could play into the bogging issues mentioned in other thread

its some thing clutching tho, the plugs look fine, and i have cleaned the carbs..

that bog i think is most definately clutching..

Thats why I said "playin into" if your already having a clutching issue, sounds as though its not back shifting, and engine is getting somewhere between 2 to 4 times as much oil as it should it is goin to compound problem. Does it seem to smoke more than usual or compared to other similar sleds

Yes, that is normal. You will easily notice when the oil pump goes bad as it delivers full WOT oil even at idle.

You oil pump has failed in WOT position. it's very common on the 97 600 (and 500) twins. When I got my 97600 twin venture, it used about a tank of oil to a tank of gas as well. The original oil pump on these sleds in 97 were of poor quality. There was a service bulletin on them, but no recall. Look on port yamaha's website and find the oil pump on the micro fiche. That will show the updated part number. They are about 90 new, but you can get a used one that is not the original 97 part number and it will work fine. The oil pump on my venture is the first oil pump I've ever seen or heard of that has failed in all my years of snowmobiling (and oil injected 2 stroke outboard days too).
A new updated oil pump will fix that, and wake it up as well.

the thing smokes like a bastard, it had power and such, but not as much as you would seem to think it would have

Was the oil pump fixed for the 1998 VMax?

A 2001 SX500R holds 12 gallons of gas, so if you go through 2 tanks, that's 24 gallons of gas burned. 1 gallon = 4 quarts, so that means you have burned 96 quarts of gas. If you burn 1 quart of oil per 1 tank of gas as you stated, that means you have burned 2 quarts of oil and 96 quarts of fuel. 96 / 2 = a 48:1 ratio, no problem there.
