Is the 97 VMAX 700 Triple a Good Sled??

Great quote & similar to SRX vs Viper discussion. I'm not lake racing for coin, pride, or hardware so I'd be just as happy with Vmax, SX, or SXR that'll haul a$$ with the best of them. I just want a clean 700 triple made by Yamaha in the 98'-02' range at a price that won't break the bank . ;)!
 
I 'd like to ask that same question-what's this about pipes and the crank? I have had slp pipes on mine for 5 or 6 years now and it"s never been apart! I followed the recommendations for clutching and jetting that slp supplied with the pipes and what a wakeup experience for this machine> I have beaten every power-valved srx that I've come up against' no matter the year srx
 
got bender triples on my 99 vmax and never had a single motor issue.....still runnin strong at 9K miles......great sled

Not saying you are wrong but the 2000-2002 SRX should beat you. Those are much faster than the 98-99 SRX's. Look back at any of the world series ice drags and you will see the SRX dominated those years. I have personally seen piped redheads run against 2000 SRX's (Ulmer's) and the outcome wasn't good.

I agree that stock vs stock....SRX wins vs the 97' Vmax 700's. Anything that's a 700 Yamaha triple, 3-1 or triple piped are all good in my eyes. Right now there's a few cheap priced SRX's within striking distance from me but man, they're pretty beat & high mileage sleds. Honestly I'd pay a bit more for a good condition or well maintained high mileage sled. The 97' Vmax 700's seem in most cases, quite a bit less coin so I could probably find what I want in that model year to fit my cash flow but.....if an SRX came up in equal condition/price, I might have to just flip a coin. It's a win/win whatever triple 700 model you choose just as long as Yamaha made it. ;)! :yam:

No P/Vs to $crew with,clean,worry about on the V-max. Arguably...a much better trail sled/ditch banger than the SRX.

The SRX is more performance orientated for the 'lake type' rider. They have loooooooong legs to get out and gallop.

What I was pointing out was the 2000 and newer SRX's will still outrun most piped redheads. The only two sets of pipes on the redhead that give it a healthy boost of topend are the end dump Power Inc. pipes and the Hauck/CPR pipes. Most of the other ones give it a bunch more in the midrange but are not all that much faster on top. Realistically a piped SX/R is around 135-137HP while the 2000 and newer SRX is over 140 HP. The SRX is a powervalve motor too which really aids in the top end advantage.

Great info. Is there any difference in reliability between the stock single vs triple piped 700's with all updates, regardless of the year?

Well...as it happens I own all three sleds discussed. My sled 2000 srx 700 suspension upgaded, studed, bone stock motor/clutching. Girlfreinds sled (my back up) 2000 sxr 700 bone stock except for studs. 1997 vmax 700 sx. Picked up the 97 vmax as it was tooo good of a deal to pass it up ($1000). My buddy is riding a 2001 sxr 700 pretty well modded,tripple Piped,can,clutch reeds,air box mod. He can run with me up till 6-700ft till the srx starts to stretch its legs into the gallop! None of the sled mentioned in this thread are bad sleds, boils down to personal preference. How fast do you want to go and how much do you want to spend to get there.

No reliability issues to speak of.......Fuel milage goes straight into the cr@pper w/ pipes. As in,cut in half,probably more. And with fuel prices on the rise..... :dunno:

On a redhead motor? I haven't heard much about that but a Viper w/ pipes.......that's a different story. Fuel mileage is awful with pipes on those.....about half.

Amazing how Viper's milage goes out the window w/triple pipes. I'm guessing that if OEM triples were put on, the milage would be better than the aftermarket pipes?
 
thx for all the input... ended up getting the vmax xc with bender pipes and bender cluthes....runs great. thought it was a good deal...traded my 95 gmc for it
