yes, you read that correctly. I am in the sad position of having no cash to fix it at the moment. I am panning on cleaning up everything, heavily spraying it with oil, and wrapping it all up in plastic to prevent any further damage. trying to get figured out how much I am looking at to get things done so I can plan and save. sucks, but its where I am at right now. still have a spare sled (wifes '00 sxr 600) that I can ride, so I am not out of sledding. just off the viper a little while.

That sucks. Best of luck and I'll be sure to follow your posts to see what you do.

yeah, thats what I was looking at. it does suck. what sucks worse is that if only it were a twin I could do it all myself lol! there is a 98 xc700 nearby with the need for a rebuild on one side. all oem polaris parts are crazy cheap. bearings are like $30 on the crank, $17 for the rod bearings. always liked the xc 700... ;)

you won't like it as much when the pto end of the crank snaps off, as they were know for that. just like their 800 twins did that. guy at work had his pto end of his crank snap off of his '00 xc 700.

with the cost of the just the bearings, its cheaper to buy a CRANKSHAFT ASSY
8DF-11400-01-00 $1,147.68. Well if you include the piston rings its about equal.

why do you feel you need to change all the crank bearings? surely they ain't ALL shot?

because they do ALL have over 9k miles, and if I do no change them while it is apart it just seems foolish, no? they ARE all rusty...

oh, and did he not hear of the support plate for the crank end? I know of a lot of polaris out there with TONS of trouble free miles. I am a yamaha guy through and through, but no wearing blinders either.

When I'm in that deep I always do the bearings and seals. I've never seen a motor with bearings as expensive as this one tho.

man, you might be better off picking one up out of a low mile sled that is being parted. I know it's probably not the best option, but if it's in good shape, you might as well swap in one and leave everything as is just to get it running again. I've seen them go for $300-$500 with low miles. Who knows, maybe you could get another 5-9000k miles out of it.

Hey, whole 1998 SRX for sale for $300.00 here in colorado. If you know somebody here that can get it and ship for you....or maybe pay seller enough to ship. Put the SRX crank or better yet complete motor and triple pipes in your Viper

See my post on page three, SRX for sale (its not mine)

there was an 01 RIGHT near me that was fine other than being rolled at low speed. had like 2500 miles and guy wanted $600. I couldnt respond fast enough, someone else got to it it first and it is now on CL being parted for about 5 times that in stuff! though that would have been sweet, swap the motor, pipes, etc and have a nice running sled again! no dice though. keeping my eyes open for a used motor though, thinking it would be a LOT cheaper and I would have a good top end (jugs and head at least) as a spare set. time will tell. have a PM out to Don as well looking for options and ideas. maybe the best time to port as well ;)

Good luck! I'll keep an eye out as well around here for ya.

yeah, the biggest issue is not having any extra cash at all right now. hope to put some away over the summer. unless I can come up with someone that has what I want and wants to trade for my project CB750 motorcycle lol! losing interest in it (or being realistic that I will probably never get there!) and KNOW I would use the viper :)

In the process of getting my Viper getting crank completely redone right now...My bearings look a lot like yours. The Barn it was stored in last summer is wet with a dirt floor. I didn't fog it last year, but did most previous years and kept it in my garage. The bearings are outrageously expensive, and I will have around $1000 in bearings by the time it's done, then have to pay someone who knows how to put it back together. Hard to believe one season of not putting it away right would allow that much rust to form.

certainly does suck. on a note of interest, aoakwood, bender sells a new oem viper crank for $1300 or so. might be worth it, same or similar price as the rebuild and its all new! might be where I go in the end

I have a question, long ago we used to match up OEM bearings with bearings at the local bearing shop. They would mic them and find ones the same.

Can this still be done? It was a boatload cheaper than Yamaha bearings when we used to do this for motorcycles.

All things being equal -- I'd spend the money on a new crank if you plan to ride that sled another 5,000++ miles. If not, just get a used crank in working order (lot's of sleds being parted out these days....), get her back together, and ride her like you just stole her...... ;)!

I always had the idea of keeping the sled forever, thought it would be neat to have an 20 year old sled that was 1 owner. had the thing since 1.4 miles and have always loved the thing. also thinking that a new crank would be the way to go. I guess it all depends on what comes along. if I find a real nice sled with a kinked tunnel for cheap I might buy it, take what I need and part the rest. time will tell. and I was wondering the same thing stingray...
