Manitoba FLOOD WATCH 2011

WELL..where they ever off this time.The flood will be a non issue for us guys in the RED River Valley..me anyways.They have down played the crest by over 2 feet.Water has yet to come into my back yard area.There is some water in my back field..Can't even try out my boat.. :o|

BUT get this..On May 1 we are supposed to get a snow storm.A weather statement has been made.UP to 10 -15 cm's of snow..WOW.Think I will get the 600 out..run the snow and water skip at the same time..can't believe this weather.It has been beautiful past few days..like 18 to 20 C temps.Now back down to 0-2 C and SNOW!!! and blowing snow yet...intertesting.My lawn is just starting to turn greentrees are budding and now a blizzard..who new ;)!
 
water didn't go up much,the crest will be here a little late now..but with the rain the the snow coming,some areas are on the watch.Supposed to be gusts of up to 80 k/ph and warnings are being given for those where the water is up against dikes that waves could create water to breach dikes and in the Lake areas the ice could move and pile up against shore and cottages.There are still people losing their houses to this wide spread flood.In our area not so much.Where Turk lives in the Brandon area,that is where it is all happening.

Just wait Blue! little over a foot of snow fell last night and still snowing and blowing like a bastard out right now

races start at 1:00 Pm LOL!

I don't think that will happen here,you are 6 hrs North of me.One thing for sure..with the little rain we have haD..MY FLOOD WALL IS HOLDING IT IN GOOD.I guess the foam insulation I used keeps the water in.Was meant to be the other way around..hey it works.

i didnt know they used those for flood control.... i did however know they use them overseas for blast protection. the trailor i stayed at in baghdad was surrounded by these stacked 2 high. did the trick!
 
yeah the flood is more concentrated now West of where I am.It is the largest flood in 300 years now.They have used a lot of them Hesco barriers around Brandon,Manitoba where Turk resides.The water is to much and now as of today the Government will be cutting a dike open to relieve pressure.This will flood some 150 homes and destroy fertile specialized and garden land for garden and farm business's..but will save another 800 homes if the dike where to breach by itself.It will be a controlled release.I think if they don't do it right,the water will just eat away at the dike structure and then more then 150 homes will be sacrificed.
Where I live,back in 1997..we were the ones sacrificed to save the city...the story continues...

should be interesting because they have never done a controlled release before..it could get out of control.A lot of residents already are hiring Lawyers in a Class Action Suit to sue the Government here because of this sacrifice..but Government will be right in their call because of what they will save.It is cheaper to compensate 150 to 250 homes then 800 plus homes..the battle continues.I know when my dad was still living and after his house was rebuilt and other flood proofing matters taken care of for him..the Government wanted him to sign off on a release form that everything has been done satisfactory to him.Well my parents had to put out $20,000 deductible.That is why after my dad has past away,my mom still has a Law Suit along with others against the Government.It has been like 14 years and she has received nothing yet..so good luck to these other people trying to sue...

I had to put out $10,000 deductible myself and will never get it back..what a joke!!!

wow.thats wild. well by the sounds of it you are in the clear(ish)? of course you could always take your boat over by those 150-250 homes and try it out there. are they giving enough warning to pack up belongings and such? or is it just"get out now"?
 
well people were not really given any real warning.It was supposed to happen a cpuple days agao this release..but they are waiting to the very last second..watching the flows(cfs) numbers.This has given people some extra time.One guy who lives close to where the release will be said the water will be 8 feet higher then his house... :o| .Others said they don't believe they can do a slow release..that it will bust open eventually..time will tell.This release is suppose to happen any moment now..I am listening to the radio station that carries all this update..they better wish it goes good...
 
believe it or not..they postponed it again until Sat. morning..giving home owners more time to sand bag and prepare.What they did was rip a roadway open and packed the whole area down with large rocks to absorb the impact.The water would find its way thru the rock pile and not create any erosion this way.Once it is opened up,man and equipment will be stationed there 24 hrs around the clock to maintain it.I guess with all the talk about law suits and such,Gov. has tried to prolong the event as long as they can and will try to release slowly so no one gets flooded.Farmers around there are scrambling to remove all there grain to higher areas.One farmer was not to impressed..he has to move 10 semi truck loads of grain and the yard is soft for the trucks to drive thru..but he has no choice he said...others have to move livestock..what a chore to say the least.
 
on another note..this water all flows North to Lake Manitoba..which already is starting to spill onto land now.A lot of cottages will be going under and everything thrashed.Already reported that the campgrounds and parks there will be closed for the rest of the year.Other major parks are under water also and remain closed,the clean up will be ugly they say.There is talk that the Lake will end up being about 3 feet higher then normal..thus forget about beach and cottage activity this year,the water will really not drop its level after this for a while..

news update:The controlled breach as started a few minutes ago..time will tell.They are opening up a 90 meter by 2.5 meter hole to begin with..we are now waiting to hear what is going to happen next.As the time passes,they will open it up more.Rigth now it is calculated to be a 500 cubic feet per second spill and increaded gradually to 3000 sq/ft per second.That is still a lot of water flow.

He might just be only able to donate his time as of the news i watched tonight there was no reports of any flooded houses after the dike was relieved.

Mr Hanny lost a couple of hen houses and a bunch of farm land is flooded!
