Hi, I have both an sxr700(2001) and a 98 srx 700. I just picked up the sxr and decided to go for a decent little day trip, 80 miles. Sxr just made it, and I mean just made it on one tank. The srx on the other hand still has 3 gallons in it or so. Is this typical of the redhead triples or should I be looking at something. Before I took off I went thru the carbs on the sxr and changed the mains to 142.5's straight across. I set floats to spec, cleaned those little screens, cleaned the entire carb, jets and such included, new plugs(gapped to spec), new belt. Sled was boggy most of the day, but temps were warm. So out of this I come up two questions. Should I lower the needles? Are SXR's just harder on gas than the SRX'es? Great sled though, I love the way it handles tha trails. I guess one more question. If I peel the headgasket will i need to rejet to compensate? The heck with it, while I'm at it. Should I pipe this baby and if I do what pipes would be the best, noise isnt an issue unless they are really obnoxious.

pipe it and you'll get around 40 miles to the tank then..but the fun factor is worth it...

I have a long-travelled 98 700sx (same redhead as your SXR) with CPR pipes and I still got over 100 miles to a tank this winter, even when it was warm, I got pretty good gas milage. The pipes and the skid are new this year, I love the way the pipes woke this sled up.
I've got a piped and ported mtn max with a 144 under it. MN trail riding it will pull about 120 miles to a tank. That's the number I use when planning gas stops for it when out for a trail day here in MN. On a play day or a mountain day out west it doesn't get that sort of mileage, but then I don't expect it to.

I was thinking I should see better than 80 miles for a tankful, it was easy trail riding, never hitting more than 60 miles an hour. What then is my option to cure this? Carbs are very clean, compression seems good @130psi right across. From what I can tell it is bone stock other than me switching out stock mains for 142.5's. My airbox seemed to be missing something though. It looked like there were slots that may have had dividers that slide down into them, maybe?

I ride a 2000 srx 700 and the old lady is riding a 2000 sxr 700. She is a point a to point b type rider where as I am a double back to pass here @ 100 dink off in the feild waiting for the rest of the crew to catch up and my srx uses considerably less fuel going 20%+ more distance. What does plugs look like? I would put that sxr on a stand and check out the rolling resistance on track (to loose/tight) check the boogies and bearings while your at it. Its amazing what just a little bit of drag will add up to at the end of the day.

If you have the 2 halves and then one divider or baffle that sits in between them then you have everything.
