Your statement would be valid, if Ski-Doo and Arctic Cat didn't have emissions complinant 2-stroke sleds, as well as decent 4-stroke offerings.
Meanwhile, Ski-Doo will sell a lot of sleds.
Still waiting for Polaris to step up with a decent 4-stroke sled.

Yep, some 2-stroke engines from Arctic Cat, Polaris, and Ski-Doo blow up, just like our VMax 600 engine did last year.
And guess what? Some Yamaha 4-strokes have grenaded too; although they are more reliable than a 2-stroke from any brand.
What the heck does Cat's Diamond Drive have to do with Yamaha Passion or whether it is a 2 or 4-stroke? The put the DD on 2 and 4-stroke sled and it sucked on both.

i agree with laporte. the apex is a very fast sled. and ive seen them dominate many rival sleds as a guy in our riding group owns one. yes mabey a little heavy but not lacking power to move that fat a**
srxman72 said:Only reason we see four stroke motocross bikes is because they were allowed to be double the size of the 125 two strokes and 80% larger than 250 two strokes. The rules were previously cc vs cc no matter what kind of engine. At the time, nobody thought a heavy slow four stroke could compete with the two strokes so they gave them a huge displacement advantage(250 2T vs 550 4T originally in 1997) when Yamaha wanted to build the yz400f. No rule change, no four strokes.
agreed as well, but the double displacement 4 strokes have better fuel efficiency without the need to burn oil. do i like the fact that everything is going 4 stroke? no.... but our government is pushing the pollutant issue real hard. and for good reason. not sayin im a tree hugger rather have a 2 stroke any day. but this is what it boils down to in the end.
and also what i think is funny is i own a... get this.. 1998 jetta tdi 1.9l turbo diesel i bought it for fuel milage and nothing else it pulls 49mpg. but it pulls steep hills without the need to downshift often find myself up shifting for the grunt. and is still down right pretty fast. top speed wise. its just a different kinda power. i guess im relating this analogy 2 stroke vs 4 stroke

Most Yamaha snowmobile 4 stroke engines can be expected to go 30,000++ miles. Probably a lot more than that even. Shoot, Nick Keller has like 54,000 miles on his Vector GT engine. They just go and go and go. And that is with regular oil changes as the only regular maintenance -- no new rings or rebuilds.
The only time I've heard of a Yamaha 4 stroke sled engine go is (1) over heating or running oput of oil, or (2) with high boost turbo or s/c and insuffient octane fuel. They don't just grenade or burn down.
Just saying......

I don't think the vmax is fresh from the showroom floor. The guy i got my SRX from, bought a brand new ski-doo, went up to the U.P. Burned it down at 70 miles on the clock. He was pissed to say the least.

since you seemed to haved losted your passion for yamaha there seems to be seven pages of a good groupe off people in the middle of september that would glady take your srx off your hands...lolsnopax said:With my srx approaching 11 years old I've been eyeing up a new go fast toy. I don't think it will be a yamaha. They seem to have just lost their passion, or at the very least do not seem to inspire it. Sure they have some of the most technologically advanced sleds out there but they seem to lack soul. Is our just me? Compared to companies like arctic car and polaris yamaha seems very uninterested inn the snowmobile market. Maybe It is all a lack of marketing. Anyway thats my rant.
The lack of innovation from Yamaha in recent years is most likely due to the fact that the value of the U.S. dollar vs. the Yen is down 32%....the exchange rate went from 110 in 2008 to 76 in 2010. So when Yamaha gets the U.S. dollars back and exchanges them to pay its workers, it only has 0.68 Yen...until that exchange rate stabilizes or reverses, new capital projects like sled redesigns are very unlikely to be profitable and therefore very unlikely to happen..advantage goes to Cat and Polaris
