I picked this snowmobile up a few weeks ago and was finally able to dig into it. The story I got was it would only run ~60mph and not go any faster. The previous owner took it to a dealer and was told the crank needed removed, trued, and welded. I have read up on the crank issues associated with these years. When I bought it, the previous owner had started removal of the engine so I was not able to see it run. I finished removing the motor and removed the crank lastnight. Unfortunately, the crank already been welded so I have to guess that is not the problem. I am dropping it off with my machinist tonight. I do believe it has a few bad bearings. Specifically the 2 on either side for the waterpump/oil pump drive gear. They spin smooth but slow. All of the others seem ok. The top end looks great. Any ideas on what may be the issue? It is a '99 SRX 600 with just under 6k miles.

Thanks in advance.

How were the power valves? Check the servo to be sure it's working and check the wiring harness for damage.
The rest will have to wait until you have it back up and running, compression, spark, etc.

I have not looked too closely at the valves. They did apear to be realitively clean. I was told the servo was checked and working but will verify for myself when it's back together. I have heard of the harness damage problem. Where do this usually occur? Thanks!

Harness damage from the plug at the bumper under the moter and up by were the oil pump is.Search and you will finds tons of info on this.

As for the low speed i agree its your power valve systom ....or your stater will not put out the power needed to run the servo moter ...maybie by a short if your lucky. When the cranks were bad in these sleds they would show a runout at the clutch you would hardly no the differance except for a little vibraction at idle.Thats it.

I have found alot on the srx600 that the cdi box seems to have a glitch in them that the sled will run decent low speed but the powervalve servo opening function of the box gets very sloppy and it gets to be erratic and it wont fully open the valves it quivers the pulley back and forth.

I have also run into this with the 98-99 700's but only a couple times and its been more to the srx600 for some reason.

definitely something to check after you get it back together.

Thanks for the info guys. I will check these when it goes back together. Crank and cases are dropped off and I picked up a set of OEM gaskets/seals off ebay and those should be on their way. In the mean time I will check out the harness and start cleaning parts.

UPDATE - Too busy over the holidays to mess with anything. Plus lack of snow has not put me in the mood to mess with it (40 degrees as I type this). The crank checked out ok by my very anal machinist. Picking it up tonight and planning on assembling the short block this weekend. I do not have a manual so I need the torque specs for the crankcase bolts, cylinder nuts, head bolts, waterpump cover bolts, intake bolts, exhaust manifold bolts, exhaust valve cover bolts, stator bolts, flywheel nut, and recoil bolts. Also i want to check out the stator before install so I need the ohm specs.

Thanks again in advance for the input on my project.

you can get all them specs from a manual. If you sign up for a VIP for $15,you will be able to download a manual from here..A small price for all that info.

I didn't know that. VIP payment has been sent! Thanks!

Also check out the tech pages!

I checked there but didn't see any torque specs. I was going to buy a cd manual off eBay but glad I sent my $$ towards this site instead.

So I got a little side tracked this weekend with the family and ice fishing. I was able to put the bottom end together. I also decided to go ahead and order rings for it. She has just under 6k miles and is starting to show some blowby on the pistons. I needed to order some OEM parts anyway so the wait for the rings isn't going to hold me up.

Also, here is a pic the day I brought her home. Not bad for $500 :2strokes:

Ok, I'm back on the project. Ordered some OEM parts, realized I forgot some stuff, so had to order more :) . Started putting the top end together.

Here is a pic of my helper. She wants to ride this beast :)

Got #1 cylinder done and moved to #2. Had trouble getting the upper ring into the groove. Looked a little closer and the edge of the piston crown on the exhaust side is melted #$%&* I'm not sure how I missed this. The old ring was not stuck. I wasn't able to do a comp. test as it came to me in a couple boxes.

What are the chances this was causing the "won't go over 60 mph" issue?

Ordered a new OEM piston, pin, clips, and bearing (almost $200 without the rings). I already had a new set of rings. Finishing putting the engine together. My exhaust, intake, and exhaust valve gasket order got messed up so those won't be here until tomorrow :( . I still have to go through the clutches and clean/install the exhaust valves. Plus some other minor stuff. Here are a few pics of my progress.

I think that piston could have contributed to the 60 limit. I think you did well on that price also. Good luck on the rest of it.

Thanks, more parts should be here today. My goal is to have it done so I can drive it on the trailer for storage vs dragging it by hand :)
