the bad news keeps coming! CRANK!

hey all

tore the crankcase apart on my srx today. every bearing besides the ones on either side of the oil pump gear, are VERY loose and very noisy when turned. im assuming this means theyre SHOT! now my 1000$ fix has turned into $2000 or more. i think ill pass on fixing this engine!

What other problems are you having? You can get a rebuilt crank out of Quebec for around 650 plus shipping.
 
yeah if I ever get into that situation with a motor..I to would not re build it and spend $2000.Cheaper to just pu another sled and part out the old one to pay for it...parts are just to costly today...
 
ya stagg i wont be needing the parts, thanks a million tho.

blue i think im gonna keep my sled but buy another one as well. if the sled isnt in as nice shape as mine, i will swap the motor into mine. then i will have lots of parts! would like to come across a 2002 so i couod have the peace of mind that must come with the DCS!! im sure its annoying to some people, but i think i would like it!
 
It's a crying shame to see an otherwise solid SRX parted out but it is awfully hard to justify spending the money to rebuild an engine when a whole sled is available for about the same coin.
 
oh its not getting parted out, im just not spending over two grand to rebuild this engine when i can get a whole sled in quebec for two grand with 2500 miles. theres a motor to put in mine, and a whole sled for parts!

my srx is way too nice to part out, its sad
 
I would be leery on a low mileage SRX for so little money..something must be going on with the motor or something.Watch you don't get taken,,because it is the motor you really are looking for....some guys don't take care of their stuff and could pu someone else's head ache....be CAREFULL.Try to find one locally before out of Province.
 
If it were me....

I would spend the money to fix the engine I had as then you will know exactly what you have and won't be buying someone elses sled of unknown mechanical condition.
You could very easily end up with two SRXs that need a motor!

the link he sent was just for the motor. as is the $950 for the one with 2500 miles,its just the motor. i know i should just rebuild mine, but as of now im looking at $2200 plus. thats alot of dough to spend on a motor! its just hard to justify spending the same amount on a rebuild instead of getting a whole other sled along with a motor. but i know what your saying, one lawn ornament is enough! and as for getting stuff locally, there are only 5 srx's here, all of which are in perfect running order and wont be going for sale. thats why i had to buy my srx out of province. ill be driving through new brunswickthis summer,and will definatly pay the jerk who sold it to me a visit since he wont answer my calls or emails!
 
when I bought my SRX from out of town..I got one at least with a good motor,the rest of the sled was beat up more then I thought,so my money went into fixing everything up.That is what happens when we are in a rush to buy and I wanted an 02.Could of pu many 98's and 2000/2001's..but when I heard of the 02 I snatched it up blindly I hate to say.And found my sled came from the USA also...guy made some money on me I think..paid $3700 for it back in Jan. of 07.
 
Talk to Jeff at Midwest Crankshaft about repairing your crankshaft. He just inspected and repaired two SRX 700 cranks for me. One needed one main bearing, one connecting rod, one connecting rod bearing and the center crank pin welded for $285 including shipping. The second one needed to have the center crankl pin weld cut out, realign the counter weights across the center crank pin (this crank was previously "fixed" by a so called "top notch expert"), install a new connecting rod bearing and reweld the center crank pin. This work cost me $185 including the shipping. Jeff is very reasonable with his labor rates and has a large inventory of Yamaha crankshaft parts. He has been performing warranty work for Yamaha for many years.

It would be very worthwhile to call him. I'll look up his phone number and post it. He may even have some used cranks for your sled. It can't hurt to call him.

I recently picked up the entire bottom end for a 2000 SRX engine: crank case halve, sator, flywheel, recoil starter, oil pump, motor mounts, crankshfat and many more smaller parts for $400. There are good used parts to be purchased. I just sent this crankshaft to Jeff to have it inspected. I'll be building a third engine as a spare with these parts.
