We have two of these, both 96's, 600 and XT model. Both are stock. One has been in the family since new. Bought the other last year from a friend that bought it new. Said carbs were rebuilt when bought.
The family XT gets about 7-9 mpg riding pretty hard. The friend XT gets about 3-4. Last night rode about 40 miles and the friend XT ran out of gas 5 miles from the destination. The family XT not only made it to the station but still had lots of gas left - needed 6 gallons.
Have had carbs apart and cleaned. Not much improvement other than got rid of hesitation on heavy acceleration. Also checked reeds, visually look good. Compression looks good/comparable on both.
Thinking about taking carbs on family XT and putting the whole setup on friend XT to see if the problem follows the carbs or the machine.
I know carbs, reeds, compression, clutch and electronics can all cause poor mileage. Hoping someone can give me a start to resolving.
