We have two of these, both 96's, 600 and XT model. Both are stock. One has been in the family since new. Bought the other last year from a friend that bought it new. Said carbs were rebuilt when bought.
The family XT gets about 7-9 mpg riding pretty hard. The friend XT gets about 3-4. Last night rode about 40 miles and the friend XT ran out of gas 5 miles from the destination. The family XT not only made it to the station but still had lots of gas left - needed 6 gallons.
Have had carbs apart and cleaned. Not much improvement other than got rid of hesitation on heavy acceleration. Also checked reeds, visually look good. Compression looks good/comparable on both.
Thinking about taking carbs on family XT and putting the whole setup on friend XT to see if the problem follows the carbs or the machine.
I know carbs, reeds, compression, clutch and electronics can all cause poor mileage. Hoping someone can give me a start to resolving.

Do they both run about the same? Is one or the other faster out of the hole? Turning similar rpms at similar spped? Take a look at choke on freinds sled, If its not fully off that will suck down more fuel. I had 96 vmax and primary was full of crud. Worked great on stand but when riding it seemed to over-rev and was slow to shift. Clutches getting hot? is the freinds studded and family isnt? Alot of people dont think about it but when you bolt 50lbs of studs into a track that adds to the rolling resistance.
50lbs of studs!
Wow! No wonder my friggin back hurts so much lifting the back of the sled onto the track dolly!

Check the float level the way the manual shows with the tubing style tool connected ro the ports on the bottom of the carb. If the floats are high the jetting goes out the window and they just suck up the extra fuel.
I have been running a set up from Maxx Performance for over 8,000 miles now. It runs so much stronger and I get about 10 MPG most days and as much as 13 if I ride it real easy.

carb
check the wash in both as these sleds will get 13mph when fueled and clutched properly.check clips on needles and choke setting in carbs to make sure one isint hanging up

Ski alingment can kill mileage as well. If the bad fuel sleds skis are toed in/out a bit that could explain part of it.

Thanks everyone. Good start for me. They run comparable at top end. Friend sled not as strong from low through mid but comes on hard at 3/4 throttle. Neither are studded and I think ski alignments are good.
I think we are pulling carbs on Thursday to compare and check floats and settings.
Thanks caravan an for the PDF with setup info. Will see how that goes and maybe pull primary and clean/inspect and go from there. Keep ideas coming and will report back with progress. Thanks all.

Would this set up work for a 95 600 not an xt?

Not sure about using it on a 95. You would have to have a 96 600 or GYT pipe single pipe since it is larger than the 94-95 pipe. Also the carbs are a little different in 96 (location if the fuel set screw). Not sure if the gearing is the same non XT to XT either?
Might work???? Someone else here may have a better answer for you.... anyone???
