Allright so my Vmax has always been a little heavy on the smoke at idle, now I know Yamaha's tend to run a bit on the rich side with their oil but it's bad enough that it's causing plugs to foul when idling and when running at slow engine speeds/steady throttle. I tried to follow the manual for the oil cable adjustment. Manual states to pull back rubber sheathing and adjust cable gap to 27-29mm, now this is the part that has me baffled. Unless my sled has the wrong oil control cable installed in it there's absolutely no way to get that kind of adjustment out of it. I get to about 25mm before i run out of threads on the adjuster barrel. The cable as it sits has approx 1mm of gap between the locknut on the adjuster and the cable nut itself. I am baffled and a little confused. I looked through some of the threads that were already posted on this and it seems as though no one has had this issue. Of course the older Vmax's don't have the alignment marks the newer sleds do, that would just make things way too damn easy!

Oh and if any of you know the part number for the NGK replacement spark plug caps feel free to post it. Yamaha nearly got me until they told me the factory replacement caps were $27/ea.

If your talking about a 96 v max its not a cable gap your after. Its alignment marks . Hear is a post that should help. You want to align the marks on the pump. Not your exact sled but closest i could find. .http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showpost.php?p=374347&postcount=7 Look down at your oil pump and the marks should be there.
No marks at all, Yamaha manual specifies a cable gap for 94-96 Vmax's, both 500 and 600. Already went out and checked to make sure I didn't miss any alignment marks on it. I wish it were really that simple!

Keep the suggestions coming though!

Man tough one then. I had a 96vmax also and it had the alignment marks. Looked just like the one in the link. The cable adjust ones you cannot even see the pump. The vmax's should be right in the open on the mag side? Puzzeled? Is your manual an OEM manual or aftermarket?

Look in the tech section it shows pictures of the alignment mark on the lever and the one on the housing that must line up.

Allright, I now feel like an idiot. Cleaned all the surfaces and sanded them lightly with some emery cloth and the marks were instantly visible. Thanks for all the help guys!
