A bit over 300 miles in one day was the most I ever put on. Then I gave up on the high miles for quality miles.... 100 miles off trail & I am a whooped dog.... & never been so happy!

500 seems like it should be possible as long as you have perfect trails to work with. I personally dont feel any desire to put on any more than say 200 miles in a day.

The town of Grand Marais Michigan puts on what they call the 500 miler every year. Thats 500 miles in 24 hours however you want to do it & lots have done it. Someday I will try..... Just for braggin rights (When I get my 06 Yamaha Shogun)

I "intend" to have my "Finisher" patch when I move from Grand Marais to Muni for the TY ride on Friday the 14th. God willing and my partner's Doo holds together.
I've only had one previous 500 mile day but several 400 - 450 mile days, all in the UP with great trails. Typically, we pick a spot on the map then go crazy trying to get there and back. Last year was Presque Isle, WI to Copper Harbor. Year before it was Ishpeming to Paradise.
Don't know why, guess we're just silly like that.

We do 300+ miles a day in Northern Ontario a couple times a year, but that is a piece of cake compared to the same mileage in the Michigan. I have only done 300 once in the U.P. and that was a killer.

Fastest way to do it Steve is to get on Grand Sable lake & make laps..... Boring as hell but a mile is a mile & that is how 99% of the early finishers do it.

You're right, Ontario miles are shorter than UP miles. I've done the Snow Challenge loop out of Wawa in one day and Cochrane to Hearst and back in a day. In the UP much more than 250 mi is killer!

230 miles in one day in International Falls, MN. It is mostly lake riding up there though so you can cover quite a bit of ground.

Lake City to Mackinac roundtrip, 2/8/03, 350+ miles, 16hrs. The worst part was the ungroomed trail from Alanston to Mackinac because of dog sled races. Never so glad to return to the camp for many DBLs. (Delicious Busch Lights) The East Jordan groomer was a pleasant sight. We typically run 180-220 a day LP, 250ish in the UP.
Longest Ride
From Wakefield to the Soo and then south and took the long way home.
5 days 1100 miles.

Wow, that just doesn't seem like much of a challenge or much fun. I think if I was going to go that route I'd hook up an electric drill to the speedo cable then go to a tavern and see how long I could ride a bar stool without falling off.Bushman said:Fastest way to do it Steve is to get on Grand Sable lake & make laps..... Personally, I just enjoy the challenge of doing it properly. Going to places I've never been on trails I don't know. Figuring out where the next gas will be, trying not to get lost on the way and praying that they're open by the time I get there. Certainly a different kind of excitement than blasting across a lake at 138 mph but exciting none the less.
Our Ishpeming-Paradise-Ishpeming ride got a bit challenging on the return when the bottom dropped out of the temps and a blizzard kicked up around Pine Stump. Our timetable got all messed up due to low visibility and we rolled into Grand Marias 15 mins. before the gas station closed.
The temperature was -25F and we spent entirely too much time at the Lake Shore Brewry, eating chili and trying to get warm. We made it to the 24 hr. gas station next to the Pair-a-Dice motel in Christmas for our final fuel stop at midnight. We stood around inside drinking coffee and both thought strongly about simply giving in to the storm and getting a room but neither one of us hard heads would mention it at the time so we pressed on.
Riding the RR grade East toward Marquette was a bit easier as we didn't have to watch for turns. Good thing because visibility at that time was about to the end of the hood. The weather cleared just outside of Marquette and allowed for an easy ride to Ishpeming. It felt good to be able to actually see as well as ride at something over 20mph. We arrived at the motel parking lot at 2:15 AM with 450 miles on the odometer. I asked my partner if he wanted to go for the last 50 and got a dirty look in reply.
Nope, cutting circles around a lake or riding a bar stool just doesn't do it for me. Not near enough story material.

185 Miles in about 5 hours. Only about 5 miles on a lake. The rest was perfect 180 miles of trails Groomed trails south and west of Tug Hill. Unbeleivable what the trails are like Monday through Wednesday in NY. It makes you want to leave the sleds in the garage on Weekends. (Maybe Not) LOL.

Two seperate rides of 304 miles and 309 miles but never made it past that real first ride. would love to plan another long ride.....CP
That is quite a ride for NY, and on a vmax4(Can't pass to many gas stations. LOL) Our group has one vmax4 and we laugh every year because he has a garden hose attacjed to the underside of his hood.
We will be riding Cranberry Lake, Harrisburg, Stillwater, Tupper Lake on Friday February 18-20. We still need way more snow then we have now to make it a good year.

The longest ride in one day I've made was last year in the UP.
Kinross to Brimley to Raco to Paradise to the falls to just east of Grand Maris down to Newberry to Hulbert to Trout Lake to Rudyaard and back to Kinross.
About 360 miles in conditions that went from lightning fast to mogules. I hurt for a week.

Longest day I can remember riding was in the UP when we rode from Gwinn to Big Bay, to have lunch and back to Gwinn. Total was around 280 miles. What an awesome trip. It had just snowed around 19" over the previous 12 hours...nothin but fresh tracks and 3-6 ft. drifts, that yoou would disappear in....freaking a-maz-ing!!! I'd live that day over a dozen times.
round 300
round trip from lanse to copper harbor and back, left early quit late, got lost cpl times too.... it was a long day....
