Or when you're going so fast you almost wipe out trying to tell someone there are two more sleds behind you - and they are RIGHT behind you!
I wonder if hand signals have ever saved a life or if someone ever died from using them?

I've thought of that a few times while riding, how sweet would that be. Bryan

The idea of a airhorn can came up in my last ride. but with some of the new sleds getting air suspension, maybe we can have the real thing soon

I wave to people that use hand signals whenever the conditions allow me to. If everyone drove like there was a sled coming all the time and stayed in control of their sled and on their side of the trail, nobody would need to use had signals. I think turning signals are great at intersections if there's confusion in who's going where ... but expecting me to tell everyone there's people behind me when I'm riding for whatever purpose is absolutely rediculous!! IMHO.
well what about the guy or girl who is a 1/8th mile behind in your party that doesnt know you came up on say another party of 6. if you didnt let the other group know how many are in your group the scraggler is in for a big surprise when he rounds a coner and all of sudden he or she is staring at 6 sleds coming at them.....

My 2 pet Peeves...aside from the givens: drinking, blowin thru blind corners and over hills.
1. As mentioned before, riding slow (10-25..depending) then NEVER looking behind you to see if there's anyone there...Last year we rode behind a group of classic sleds, (early 70's and older) which was cool for about a mile, but at 5 mhp (literally), I could hardly keep from loadn' up. They refused to move over for us, well they never knew we were behind them. I tried everything...reving the motor, but the damn stock pipe wasn't gonna let that work, so I tried waving at them in the corners hoping to catch the attention...nothing! So I rode with my elbow on the bars resting my head for...not 5....not 10...but 15 min...until they decide to STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIL!!! Now at this point I'm boiling....cuz it's not until they turned off their sleds they realized we were there...doooh!!! As we were FINALLY able to pass, I politely said to one of the guys (I'm not into"Trail Rage")...you really should look back every couple minutes to see if anyone is behind, that may want to pass....Replies: sorry man...can't hear s in this helmet. I said you can trun your head can't you?... We rode off.
2. When someone passes me and they can't do it without roosting me or give proper warning...Last year...I was already clippin along at 55 or so and 3 guys have to pass me at about 70 with no warning, cuz they're that cool, and everyone of them threw huge ice chunks at wife and I...one in the throat!!!! That felt awesome. Then only to find out they were going to the gas station a mile ahead....that behavior requires physical attention, but I blew it off as we passed them some 30 seconds later...
if you do anything that resembles this...you might be and probably are idiots.

Check your hyfax ...
AllVipedup hit the nail on the head ... People who stop in the middle of the trail drive me crazy, or a group of people stopped across the trail! Then when you manuver through them (if you can) they look at you as if your treaspassing on their trails ... like they're the only ones out there!
Also love the guy how roostes ya only to stop a 1/4 mile ahead!

If these 6 or 7 people drive like the trails are for everyone, the rider a 1/8 mile behind should have no problems, right?
I heard a story of two guys racing thru the woods in the Gogebic area a couple years ago, one met the groomer mid way. Not only did his brother in law have to go back with some pretty bad news, but I guess the guy (or his remians) were pretty messed up as he took the step right off the side of the groomer and went under the tracks.
My prayers went with him and his family of course, but also with the driver with the groomer who got to see all of it and the emergency workers that had to clean it up. Nobody needs to see that.
We all gotta ride like there's other people out there, even the people in the groomers. We also need to start treating the trails like they're borrowed and not just rentals.
(God bless all us on the trails this year, let's try our best to keep them safe.)
There, I'll get off my soap box now.

Then whats the big deal in throwing out a hand signal, instead of waiving like a complete DICK. When somebody waives to me when I'm giving them a hand signal it drives me nuts. Man up and follow the rules of snowmobiling. Bryan

No, I'm not kidding you. I will if conditions are bad - snowing or blowing snow, but if the weather conditions are good I see no reason for it.
To be honest with you, I use to use the "x number of sleds behind me" signals a few years back but once my ski caught a stick or something in the trail when I got to the edge and jerked the handlebar out of my hand. Nothing happened because the section of the trail was tight and I slow down, but it made me think abit about taking a hand off the bars when people are coming at me from the other way.
Everytime I ride I try to think of a way to let people know who's first and last, like a decal on the windshield or something, but I just can't think of a way that would work and be easy to change when the group order changes.
Sorry, but that's how I feel on the subject. Unless there is a law that tells me I need to do it I won't. Maybe I will stop waving at people though. Just don't get mad when people don't do it I'm pretty sure they have a reason for it.

Please explain to me what you get from having people tell you there are X number of sleds behind the one you just saw. Because I guess I really don't get it.
Sorry,
Mike
Sorry,

well in new york it is in the safety manual to hand signal to let on comig sleds know that ther are sleds following in your group.also heres is something that i practice,if i riding in a large group and come a upon a smaller group i give the the right away, the smaller group wil be able to pass quicker through the trail as oppossed to the larger group. the average person that is injuerd or killed on a sled is from 25-35 yrs. old, now at this age i would consider people to have some common sense but there are alot of new people getting into the sport that dont have or dont know the information like proper hand signals and my advice to anyone new to the sport is take a safety course. you have to take a course before you can get a hunting license, well i dont need someone hunting me down with 500 lb snowmobile because they are a joe rocket and they no everything about snowmobiling.JMO if you want to race take it to the track,on the trails there is a time and place for speed but know the area and if you dont know dont go !!!!
Now thats what im talkin about. That is a case i run into all the time. People think they own the trail and you cant pass. And when you try they try to push you off the trail when you go by. What is wrong with people like that ? They go 30- 35 mph and are ignorant! Ive had it happen to me everytime i ride the gr8 trails of northern Michigan.Yamahasrx700 said:You might be an IDIOT if you ride slower than me and when I want to pass you, you refuse to get over and stay in the middle of the trail.
