Blown cylinder (photos) srx 700

oh sorry guys the reason i didnt get the drilling part is i missed two posts on the first page, so yea, this might cost me a boat load of money :S and if i dont find the problem of course it will happen again ! no good lol

Dont let these guys get you down,,,,,you have spare cyl and pistons need a head .You might of very well bought the sled like this,i cant fiqure out why your recoil blew up.never heard of it on a yami unless the bolts worked loose,And that would say that the old owner was in there.

,

I had a similar back ground as far as have wrenched on cars, trucks, farm tractors and a couple dozers but was still a little intimadated with the first yamaha tripple I tore apart. The crank is the "big deal" I am a very capable wrencher and still had my crank looked at by 2 other people before i put it back in. For what a reman crank will cost you you can usually buy a running motor for a few bucks more. This is due to the center bearings. They are pressed on. Crank has to be pulled apart, bearings installed, and crank put back together. Outter bearings can be changed on your bench at home.

no problem, yea i maybe should have put some lock tite on the bolt on the recoil, it must of worked loose, so yea il have to get the crank checked out by a shop or someone around here,

thanks

Check your oil pump cable...my 1998 melted the mag side piston this year. The metal housing coming over the front of the air box seperated allowing the pump to stick wide open. You can also check the cable at your throttle lever for slack.

Il check the oil pump cable but it was allways using oil so not to worried about that, just thinking but could the reeds have anything to do with the leaning out ? il take the carbs apart and probibly the main jet is clogged, then i would have a reason for the cylinder leaning out, which would be nice !

They are NGK R BR9EYA

whats ecs ?

The ONLY plug the srx should run! Or the iridium ecs. That may have been part of the problem. This has been discussed many times here before. It prevents detonation and has a stronger ground strap.

Geez ! just cant win, those are the plugs i got with the sled and didnt think twice about it, il have to get some ecs ones then !

so i have a good jug a head and a piston, now Ill order a set of rings or each piston, and crank bearings and seals ? and gaskets ? its it a pain to get the crank out and change the outer bearings since i cant change the center ones ? do i need a press ? and do i have to worry about the needle bearings or the connecting rods ?

and have to hone out the cylinders before putting new rings ?

thanks !

Tear down isnt to bad. I highly recomend OEM, Especially gaskets. Aftermarket tend to be thicker= lower compression. If you are planning on reuseing the one good piston you have you will be better off getting used OEM versus 1 oem and 2 "other" brand. Dont be alarmed if parts of crank/rods are blueish like they got hot, some of this is from engine being assembled. If you have a reputable machine shop to check out crank or send it out. You could post pics of crank and we can comment but theres alot to be said for the feel of bearings as well as sound. As far as the br9ecs...shop around, some places want $11 per plug best price I have found was at Advanced auto parts $2.55 per plug. From what I have read on here a VIP membership gives you access to all the manuals covering torque specs and sequences and such.

Yea oem gaskets and stuff forsure, I will have three stock pistons and i will purchase three sets of oem rings and the bearings and seals, i went to Canadiantire ( like a partsourse/Napa) and he said the sled is spec form Br10es, but yea they were 19.99 for two, the crank i will see what it looks like when i have it apart and probibly post on here, or call around and see if a shop would charge much to check it out breifly, I
have an aftermarked repair manual ( Clyde) it says 97-02 yamaha three cylinder models, its been pretty good

thanks again

Year of sled? If it was posted i missed it. Pics look like a 98, based on PV cables alone. BR10ES IS WRONG! I seem to remember originally they called for one plug and then updated recomened plug to BR9ECS. Something else to check into is your plug caps. I went into 3 different stores and they ALL TRIED SELLING ME LB01EZ.......WRONG! The correct is LB05???. The 05 is the resistor built in to cap. In theory an 01 resistor seems like it would fire to hot and melt a plug. I can see in your pics its an LB by shape, but what resistor? should say on side of cap. search "plug caps" Theres a thread with a post by "a couple bucks" with the explanation of ngk cap codes.

The sled is a 98, and i found some Br9ecs for 9 $ a piece, speaking of caps, i have two original and ones thats a Ngk cap i think, i know its a different one and its also on the center cylinder ! argg

Yeah....its a NGK. May have ben part of the problem, espescially if its not an 5 resistor. should say on the side what it is.Hard to tell in pics but it might say 5k. Nothing wrong with ngk, just make sure they are the right ones for your sled. You can order the caps on line if you cant find them locally. Port yamaha (advertiser on this site) has them for $2.60 each, cheap enough to replace all 3. I just picked up a 98 600 srx CHEAP! sled has 8000miles on it,2500 on a rebuilt engine, still has factory caps and the guy couldnt figure out why it kept fouling pto cylinder. $12 worth of caps and no more fouling!

nice score ! the cap says lb05ep 5 k ohms, so thats okay right ? but il buy new ones, i tryed to get a reading with my meter, and nothing, i cant find any continuity, wierd

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/docs/resistor_covers.pdf

Heres the link I was talking about, yes thats the right cap for your sled. Cheap enough and easy enough to change all 3 and you know they are good to go! They talk about "terminal post" some caps have a real small hole requiring you to buy the plugs with the threaded deal, I would avoid those ones. I run the solid top plugs.
