So I have been working on my sled recently, and I have had great help from TY here. MRViper 700 has been very helpful. I will be sending some parts to be decked and shaved. Since I do not have a lathe, but he briefly mentioned porting the "intake"? in the case. Where your reeds sit. I looked around, and this seems like a do-able thing for a reasonably skilled artist, woodworker, construction worker. I will even have a blown case to practice on. So my questions are this. How technical/ difficult is a case port? What is the best tool? I am looking at a pencil grinder (I believe this is he correct term/tool),but is the straight in variety best or 90 deg for what I am wanting to working on? Also is there a template available? I saw a thread in here about race logics having a cylinder porting template, do you need/ do they have a case template? Anyone? Thanks

IMO:
Case porting on your Red Head would be the last mod needed and would only show any noticeable improvement when all other major mods have been done such as:
-mod cylinder porting
-high RPM pipes
-high flow reed cages
-modified airbox
-Big Bore
-38mm flat slide carbs or bigger
-ect...
You already have the reed cage restriction issue looked after on your cylinders[reed spacers cure this issue as well]
Also, from experience....if you were going to do case mods, I would suggest you sent the cases to an expert for any mods.

Thanks Bob. Big bore hmmmmm.
SLP used to have a high altitude 800BB for your sled that made 160+ hp....Don't know if they still offer it.
I have the reed spacers. What are high flor reed cages? Aftermarket, or just a different yamaha model. AKA use the reeds from a sxr on a MM?
SRX reed cages with carbon tech carbon fibre reeds work very well on the SX,MM,+SXR red head 700s.
Nice, so they have a larger "throat", or that amounts to the ability to move more air thru them?
Is it possible to get 160+ hp out of a stock bore motor w/pipes and porting?? Will need bigger carbs??
Question of sequence
Bob, I had a question of sequence. I do not really have a budget/ scope of work yet, but I am wondering if you can do these one or two at a time and what would the order be? Or must they be done all at once. Can I purchase the SRX reeds and install them now, or must it be with say the 38mm carbs, and big bore? I do not know, I am asking here. From my nubee point of view the reed would be OK on their own, because they would allow the motor to breathe better. Of course you would check jetting to make sure not to lean out. I have SLP tripple pipes, but you mentioned high RPM pipes what is the difference? Thanks

Ask me this question again in the VMAX,SXR,SX forum as this is all non power valve "Red Head" questions.
Will do, moved to Vmax postings

Hi guys, going to put my two in.I used to port, and Polish race heads for autos . Really as far as. Two strokes go, unless you're going for an al out race buzz to the sky motor, you would be better off just cleaning up all the casting flaws.Smooth them out with a dremmel, and some cartridge rolls, and you would be surprised how much it helps. It took me a good couple of years to be real comfortable with it,but that will give improvement 's.Gasket matching is also a good idea, the straighter the flow, well you get the idea.
