Hey All,
I'm as new to snowmobiling as the cast of jersey shore is to real life. So I thought this might be the place to start.
My friend has bought an Apex a couple years ago and has left his 05 Viper in storage. He said he'd sell it to me if I was interested, but I've never threw my leg over a sled before. So big question: are vipers still cool? Does it still turnheads? How does it compare to the sleds of today, no matter the manufacturer?
Thanks.

Is it an 05 Viper Mtn? I think that is the only style they made in 05 but don't quote me on that. If so that was one of the last years of that sled, and it has the updated Pro Mountain suspension. Same that is found on the Apex, Nytro, etc. Although there was a few changes made to it in 09 or 10. But they are very good sleds. Compare to the sleds of today, new sleds, you will easily be left behind in my opinion but still a very nice sled. There is a reason we still have 2 of them in the garage.
You will be left behind until the 4 stroker breaks and they have to spend thousands of dollars to get it fixed.

At least a viper you can just open the Hood and fix things. If you get stuck or just need to move it you fan pick up a viper. Probably need a crane to lift the apex... I still like hearing my stroke exhaust in front of me.t

Unless you're part of the new generation that thinks only new is cool. Then I can't help you. I don't spend money to get looked at. I spend money to put a smile on my own face....

Its not what you ride its how you ride it. For me there's no better feeling than smoking someone through the trails who's on new expensive equipment on an "old" outdated machine.

Your trails must not have bumps ?? Vipers are still "cool". Although I feel I make my sled look cool, not the other way around.

Amen brother!
Back to the OP's question, yes they are still cool! Of course, when you come to this page, we are going to say that. Example given, my buddies were just over on Sunday and were looking at my sled in the garage. They told me it looked bad**s. Which is nice, but I care more about reliability, and thats why I bought it. Like killerklown said, it puts a smile on my face every time I pull the rope. Post some pics of it.

I;m convinced vipers aren't cool... They're F****** Awesome! This viper rides just as good as an apex, and spanks them in 800 ft: Fact.

Unless you have triple pipes and clutching on a viper they won't spank an apex in 800ft. Stock vipers loose power at 80mph. My Srx leaves my friends modded viper in the dust at 80mph and higher. My apex is as quick as my Srx. Top end on apex vs Srx seems to end with the apex in the lead 7 times out of 10. I love my two stroke yamaha's but there is something to be said for the four strokes when you know how to set up a sled!!!

so your saying 98 srx with a 137hp whips up on a triple piped viper with a general(most all triple pipes add 25-30hp to this engine) 150hp engine ??
possibly sounds like the viper isnt set up too well with clutching and overall then, a lighter sled with more hp is hard to beat in just clutching in a srx. A piped viper will walk a srx from start to finish if its got as good of a prep in it as the srx has, just simple mathmatics, lighter sled with more hp!
single pipe viper with some basic clutching and chassis set up can put up 112mph on radar.... not too shabby.

I said unless you have triple pipes on a viper. My friends is modded w/o triple pipes. I never stated any performance mods on either sleds mrviper! I do enjoy how you have no comment about viper vs apex!

Viper is a great sled. Stock or modded. Yes they still have some cool factor and some are ga,ga over them. Others will have no interest so buy it to please yourself (it will do that job) but don't expect everyone to want to come over and drool over it (won't happen). And don't expect to win every race. Stock or modded that won't happen either.
If it's your first sled you will definatly be happy!!

I was new to sledding 3 years ago and bought a Viper. I got bit and now I have three! Ever since I've never been able to find the anti-venom!! They're awesome machines that are addictive as hell......!!!
I have had people with much newer sleds try my machine and instantly have second thoughts about their own. Home wreckers these sleds are....."Evil Temptress in Red" (or Blue!).
You won't go wrong with a Viper. If you want a snappy fun sled that is bullet proof....leave it stock. If you want to take the little blue pill for some extra fun.....put some triple pipes on!
And on this site you will have virtually unlimited support.
Best of luck with whatever you pick!

Have ridden a Viper for 10 years now and still love it. I did mod it a bit though.

ok, I see but thats not how your post reads. Just pointing out the obvious in your post is all.
As far as apex vs a viper, stock... sure it can beat it after a bit out from the start but your comparing a sled with 150hp to a sled with 120hp. So lets make it even and put triple pipes on the viper and the apex loses! Triple piped viper will wax it! They will both have 150hp and the viper is WAY lighter, so the viper wins... been there done this already.
Takes some mods to get the 4 strokes to beat the old high perfomance iron(srx700 and piped vipers,vmax4's). Not dissing the 4 strokes, they are nice and really run when modded but it takes some mods to dust off a srx or a triple piped viper not a stock apex!

You're right, it's more like 500 ft, typo, and that's with a bender SINGLE pipe and much help with clutching from members on this sight.supervr4230 said:Unless you have triple pipes and clutching on a viper they won't spank an apex in 800ft. I'm not going to argue the about which modded sleds can be quicker and faster. Sumsimpleracer hope you can get your hands on the viper! There is plenty of info to help you inspect and maintain or mod your machine on this website!

Funny how simple questions have to turn into a drag race to get them answered.
