Well, a rare find indeed. 1993 EX570STT. It's a mess. Looks like it was well maintained up until recently and then it got cobbled. I certainly have my work cut out for me. Going to put it on a diet. Add a deep lug track and plastic skis. The sway bar is going to get removed as well. I will try to detail the progress the best I can.

Now, I need everyone's opinion on something. Do I ditch the stickers and do a red and black theme like the last sled or keep the stickers and maybe do some blue accents?

Yeah! Time for some serious building, can't wait to see the result! Looks like a bargain to me, they have a similar for sale here right now 2200 dollar;)
 
I was hesitant to pay $450 :? I figured it was what I was looking for and they are extremely rare plus I already have most of the parts to fix it. ;)! Just going to be a lot of time and elbow grease.

Part of me thinks that leaving it with the original stickers might be better in the long run if I go to sell it. The other part of me wants to barf at the pink and purple. I totally agree it looks like poo colors and who wants that. :D:DP
 
Yeah it was on Craigslist. I was pretty surprised when I saw what it was. You are probably going to be glad you bought the XT. ;)! Some monkey cut a big hole in the belly pan and the front cooler is missing. Luckily I have extras. the clutches need rebuilding and although it seems to run good I may freshen up the motor too. The odometer is showing quite a few miles. This thing might take more time than I have. Lol I needed a sled for out west. This should work for a budget build. I wanted an exciter for the narrow ski stance and being fairly light for a liquid cooled sled. A 136 will get the job done.............once I put a 2" paddle under it.

The stickers are starting to grow on me, but still pink and purple? What were they thinking? Lol I think I could accent with blue and make it work, but I'm not making up my mind for awhile yet. Don't worry about the seat. I have extras and a new cover.
 
Step one: acquire a suitable track. I love craigslist. Lol ;)! And nice people.

2" Challenger track should get the job done nicely.
 
since i am no longer racing my 88 ex 570 i have been see ing all of these mountain ex's that i think my 88 will be turned in but i have very different ideas and remember mine have a full built aaen vmax 600 motor in it ..........i will start looking for parts for mine ...........and once a few builds infront of it are done this will be next on the list ............I know you guys will like it it is way outside the box thinking like i always do .............details to come
 
nice,i still think exciters are cool,hey monte you sure that track gonna clear if ya put that front cooler back in?i ran mine without it for years

That's good to know. Did you experience any cooling issues? This sled is going to see plenty of snow so I figured that might have to be an option to make it fit. I'll check this weekend when I'm disassembling ol girl. The plan is 8 tooth extrovert drivers, but I'm pretty sure that will not be enough clearance if I run the front cooler. I'm hoping I can recess the cooler back in the bulkhead a bit further, but if not I may just have to leave the cooler out. It was a little tore up in that area so it leaves me some room for fabrication. Lol :dunno: Regardless, that track is going in there. ;)! Lol

Can't wait! I think having the 600 motor would be the way to go. Thinking outside the box is how we learn, create and advance. So I'm sure we are all eager to see what you come up with. ;)!
 
no cooling issues,2 of my buddies did the same thing back in the day,one was psi ported with twin pipes,i rode with him all the time and never a problem.

I'm curious. What was your reason for removing it? What did you end up doing for hose? This may really end up being the route I have to take. Can't wait to do some measuring tonight. Wonder if I could keep the 9T drivers if I leave the cooler off? Hmm :dunno: This is going to be fun.
 
stud clearance,orig. track was only .50 lug with .875 studs.i used 1 plastic elbow 1 straight and pieces of orig hose.some people remove or gut the thermostat so check for that.
 
Well, the sled is really getting tore down. I need to take some pics. Had some great news doing a compression test. 150lbs each cylinder :WayCool: The pistons looked perfect and it felt healthy so I was kinda guessing it was recently rebuilt. That will save a little time and money not having to do that.

Question about the direct oil injection conversion. My other sled had the Bender kit and it does seem like a better idea. This one does not have one installed. However, why couldn't a person just hook the oil lines up to the little vacuum fitting on front side of the carbs? :dunno: Not as convenient when you need to synchronize the carbs, but it seems like it would accomplish the same thing. Anybody have thoughts on this.
 
Well, more endless research on the Yamaha autolube system. I still am not 100% positive, but I will give it a 99% that the oil injection system varies from 100:1 to 50:1 or more. So, I will be switching this to direct injection too. Mostly just for peace of mind. I think if you are a rider who blips the throttle all the time the mixture would always be good. However, this is not my riding style. I see some flaw with using the carb vaccuum fitting in that it will drain a certain amount of oil when not running. Bender kit it is. I have a spare, but need to install in these boots. Anyone, have a copy of the instructions or know what size drill bit to use. Thanks
 
Sorry if I seem like a :postwhore . I just want to get some of this information up here as I have been doing a lot of research and having difficulty tracking down the answers I have been looking for.

Closer examination I think no matter what I do I will need 7 tooth drivers to fit that track. I would rather do a drop and roll chaincase at that point, but $$$ just isn't going to allow that. Wahl Bros. Racing does offer 7 tooth 2.52 pitch extrovert drivers.

Would have preferred to stick with the 8 tooth, but I think that was going to turn into a bigger problem with lack of clearance. The 7 tooth will also allow me to replace the front cooler.

Found some interesting gearing information here.
Basically going from a 9T to a 7T driver you take 9/7=1.29.
Existing chaincase ratio of 33/17=1.94.
1.94 X 1.29 = 2.50 final ratio.
Lasse had stated in an earlier post that going down 1 tooth on the driver is like changing 2 teeth on the top sprocket so this holds true. Just making things easier.
This result would have me needing to change my top sprocket to a 19T which would result in a nice 2.24 gear ratio. Although I am debating as I will primarily be using this sled off trail. I may just try it with the 17/33 gearing first. I might really like it since that is a lot of track and these sleds aren't really big HP makers. Well, by today's standards anyway.

Well, since :worth: I better add a few. Some people really shouldn't touch their stuff. Lol But if they didn't I could never afford a sled so i guess I take the good with the bad. ;)!

Hmm perhaps I've gone too far. :roll: The sled must have taken a frontal hit at some point. The bumper was broke in two once I unbolted it. Again, I'm happy to have a couple of parts sleds to rob from. I have a front cooler a tunnel cooler, new bumper all covered. Along with a few other things. Oh, I could use a new airbox as well. Or just the lower half.

The old track is for sale and a really good set of skis. I will get some pics up soon.
