Was out on the first ride today went 100 miles problem free. Them we stopped
And when I went to start my sled again there was a squeaking noise then when I gave I gas the clutches felt like they were slipping.
Took the side cover off and the primary spins free the motor doesn't turn over. Motor does run. Any ideas what could be the problem?

Either the clutch retaining bolt came loose and the clutch is spinning on the crank or you broke a crank. Probably loose clutch.
DON"T run it!! until it's fixed.

I noticed it after about 300 then limped it back to the truck which lucky for me was only 300 feet away giving it enough just to move forward. then muscled it onto the trailer. That sucked! So Is the retaining bolt the one on the outside of the clutch? We tried tightening that one but it kept spinning even my friend holding the primary. Also I forgot to add that both springs from my exhaust broke off prior to this happening that is why we were only 300 feet from the truck. Could one have gone into the primary while moving?

if the clutch bolt is just spinning. you've got something major going on. can you remove the bolt? when you were trying to tighten the bolt while your friend was holding the clutch was it turning the engine over?

no the engine wasn't turning over, but if you spun the clutch buy hand sometimes the engine would turn over. Haven't tried to remove the bolt yet.

well if everything was still intact either the bolt would tighten or the engine would have been turning over. So either the bolt broke or the crankshaft. lets hope it's the bolt.

I'm going to cross my fingers and hope it's the bolt. Would there be some nasty noises if the crank was broken?

By the way it's a 95 600 and it has a comet primary is that stock? I can't find any on ebay to compare

Your going to have to dig into it and see what you got. a few things in your scenario seem outside of normal logic. If the bolt is broke and the clutch is spinning freely then the press fit is broke free and the clutch would easily slide of the snout of the crankshaft. The crank being broke in a way that A: its not making any noise B: can still be turned occasionally by the clutch (and driven) and C the end of the crank isnt falling out of the engine seems unlikely. Not impossible but unlikely.

Well I didn't really look into it much yet once we got the sleds back in the garage. Planning on getting to it after the holiday. I will keep you posted on whats going on. Thank You for all your help. I will start by trying to remove the bolt. Have a grate Holiday!

My friend just called me and told me the bolt does tighten and can come out. Once the bolt is tight it keeps spinning.

That could be your problem.
No Comet is not stock.
The bolt used to install it may have been to long and it bottomed in the crank before getting the clutch tight enough.
Remove the bolt and get the clutch off.
Evidence will then be seen. Everything else is speculation until then.

Could be stripped or may have never been the right bolt to begin with.
Take the clutch off and see what is going on.

Where in IL are you at??
I'm in Burlington WI (ten miles NE of Lake Geneva) and have the right stuff for that sled.

I'm In buffalo grove. Took the bolt out, was fine not stripped or broke. The clutch popped right off. Noticed that it seemed like the bolt backed off a little or something. What do you have for it? Haven't tested it yet waiting for shims for the secondary it has a little play on the shaft.

I've got mostly Vmax-4 stuff but still have quite a few 5/600 parts. Would have to check to be sure but I think I have enough to put together a nice OEM clutch.
Also have a complete longtrack kit for them. (tunnel extention/skid) and Hydraulic Brake conversion kits.
RX1 is a great sled. Not a ditch banger or fence jumper for sure but loves to run the big trails and lakes/rivers. Miles just dissapear behind it.
Your clutch many not have been tightened good enough is all but now that it spun and it's off you should check the taper on both the crank and clutch. There are different taper bores for different sleds. It's possible that comet you have isn't the right one for your sled.

I have owned a dozen or so 94-96 vmax 5-600's, LE,XT...etc. They all had yamaha primarys. The last one I had was a 95 600 LE, had a similar issue to yours but wasnt any where near as severe. The rollers had seized up (one had actually ben half way sawn threw). Remove the belt and see if theres any wobble in the primary, If there is see if its just in the primary or if the crank wobbles with it. I THINK the comet should have a different retaining bolt than stock, possible the put the comet on with the stock bolt. How long have you ben riding sled?
