Hello Folks, New here, but I have been a long time sledder and reader of this site. I have a 1990 Exciter that I have (what i think) are reichard 40mm tm flat slides. They are the motocross, cable style not rack type. The reason i suspect that they are part of a reichard kit is the sled had almost every reichard speed part available on it when i bought the sled. Here's my problem, I bought the sled and it had a hole in the mag side piston. I rebuilt the motor from the crank up, including new crankseals. The jetting it came with was 320 mains, 25 pilot, 389 Q6 needle jet and 6fj40 needle #3 pos. and 4.0 slide. I did change the pilot to a 45 then ran it. Ran super rich on the bottom end and had the idle adjustment screw almost all the way in to get an idle speed of 1500ish, but managed a full throttle burn down on a cold night. I then replaced the piston and rejetted. Went to 340 mains, 25 pilot, #3needle pos. I had perfect plug readings at wot, but still rich on idle and developed a lean spot about 1/4 throttle. Then it sat last year because we had no snow. I then went down to a 15 pilot wich finally gave me some adjustment on the idle screw. I also added a .020 shim to the needles in the #3 pos. This eliminated my 1/4 throttle lean spot. First time out this year i got about 20mi then opened it up.I got about a quarter mile and she bogged for a second like it was getting sticky then popped a hole in the mag side. I give up. Does anyone have the specs for the reichard exciter flat slides?? I should add I am running a Rpc stealth single and 93 octane fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Btw, OPS, im the guy who bought those exciter cases from you in richfield.
 
So I guess I could have made a shorter post. Does anyone have the Reichard 40mm flat slide carb specs?? or Maybe a known good starting point for jetting these things??

Thanks for the reply. Well, The answer to your question is going to be kind of long. I tore down the motor yesterday a I have a perfect tear drop with a hole in the piston on the exhaust port side. It also pinched the top ring at the same spot.
I am running a 1990 style air box, however before i ran it this year I cut the square indent out on the right rear corner of it. i am going to patch it back up.
I took the mag side carb apart yesterday also. There was some green crap/ corrosion around the main jet and bowl plug. It wasnt plugged tho. I was a bit surprised to see that because i had the carbs apart about a year ago and ran them dry before storage. Also my tank was almost dead empty and I filled it with a mix of 4 gallons of fresh 93 to one gallon of 112. Love that smell!!
Another thing I forgot about was I advanced the timing a bit to see if I could cure the idle problem I am having with the flat slides. It to will go back to stock.
So in a nut shell, I think I know why it burned down, so my low speed jetting is in question because It never seemed to run quite right on idle. If I put every thing back to where i had it last year I know I will be fine, But it seems rich at idle. Its super snappy if the rpm's are up around 2000 or better.
I was running around 77-7800 ish and 95 mph on the dreamometer before I made timing/ jetting, air box and gearing changes. When i burned it down last week I was only running 7000 / 80ish mph and I think its because I need to change the primary spring to work with my 18t top gear.
I almost forgot, I took .030 off the head and am running winderosa head gaskets.

Yep, Thats exactly what I did yesterday. The carb boots look good, I think they are from psi?? because they are the rubber oil injection type. I was thinking the same thing on the jetting. We'll giver a shot. thanks.
P.S. Whats your opinion on the rest of my jetting?? do you think I'm atleast in the ball park??

I'll try to get some pics of my Rpc single and my sleds as soon as I can. There is nothing special about the pipe really. Ive seen other pics in another thread somewhere on here. It has an expansion chamber and a removable can. I try to get you a pic tho.

I don't remember PSI selling oil injection setup, more Bender or RPC. Not sure on jets. Are your TM's two piece body?
 
The flanges must be bender then because I have the Rpc style injection plates also on another motor.
The tm's I have are one piece, but it looks like you can take a piece off on the air box side on the slide. just a couple of screws. make sense?? thats the best I can describe it.
 
Ya, doc. I could see that happening, however I have just the opposite problem. I jetted down to a 15 pilot because I had the Idle adjustment all the way in with bigger pilots. Now I have room to adjust.
I think Im gonna have to get it together and run it with the bigger mains. Then make adjustments from there. I think its very possible I could have hurt the motor last time I had it out 2 seasons ago but didnt notice it. Now with a brand new top end we'll see what happens.

New life after the burn down

I got my new pistons yesterday and cut the intake skirts 2.5mm. I decided to go with a set of ported cylinders I had lying around because they were in better shape than the set I burned up. Now I have everything cleaned up and ready to go back together. Im just waiting on my custom base gaskets Im having made. The red head is actually for another motor. I threw it on the cylinders just to see what it would look like.

I decicied to yank the motor yesterday. I was going to double check my timing and noticed the the crank seal was leaking behind the stator. Im a bit surpised because I rebuilt that motor two years ago and only put 625mi on it. No biggie though, because when I took off the top end I noticed a few little aluminum bb's hang'n around in the bottom end from blasting a hole in the piston.
It looks like its going to be stupid cold the next few days which means no work for me. Im going to take my parts to my friends machine shop, bead bast my cases and assemble my motor. I have two other motors Iv been meaning to rebuild for other projects so I might at least get those bottom ends together also.
Now Im going to apologize to you doc. I bet your scratching your head going what the H is this guy doing?? LOL. I guess Im starting from scratch with an almost entirely new set up. Wish me luck!! lol
 
I was gonna mention that to you, but I thought, well he knows. Lost 2 pistons on mine before I resealed the cases.
 
No work for me today so I got the bottom end cleaned up and new seals installed. My gasket kit should be here tomorrow and hopefully I'll get it all together. Im not in any real hurry as it's -1f right now and no snow. :(
 
Be patient, no hurry right now. This winter blows. They got snow 25 miles above us last night. Hope it makes it by the weekend. The dustings are just a tease.

Your top end will just drop in place. She'll be solid once you're finished.
