I have just about come to the end of my rope trying to solve a rough running 1998 700 Venture. Here is some background. It starts and idles but does not idle clean and crisp like a triple should, as soon as throttle is applied it starts to run rough and even backfires. I have bypassed the TORS,checked the coils, even bought a new coil and swapped each one out separately, changed plugs and plug cap ends and replaced the stator, checked the reeds, replaced the fuel filter in the tank, gone through the carbs 3 times, pulled apart the fuel pump everything looks okay, inspected the wiring harness and connectors. Compression tests at 130 for each cylinder I probably checked out a couple of other things that just haven't come to my mind yet. Next I am going to replace the needle and seat on the PTO carb as this cylinder is the wet one and I think the cylinder that is the problem. I think it could be fuel related as I have even used those spark testers with the sled on a test stand and there appears to be spark on all cylinders. It is getting frustrating and any help or suggestions would be appreciated!!!

I had a very similar problem on my 600 twin. The coil was bad and replaced that and plugs but still same problem (when hot the coil stopped working properly). Ended up being my floats were out of adjustment. Tweaked them and it runs great now, before that all the same symptoms.

Check the clips on the needles in the carbs I had that happen to me last year a clip came off and the needle wasnt coming up when i gave it throttle it was only running on 2 1/2 cylinders.

I checked with alocal crank rebuilder and he said its the SRX that had those issues the SX and Venture had a different cranks.....he got me to do a rough check of the piston positions and it appears to be correct! I have checked and adjusted the floats and thoroughly cleaned the carbs....even pulled all float assemblies and put them in fuel to see if the were taking on fuel but all stayed afloat!

Carb Needles all coming up in sync as are the slides!

So were mine take the time to pull the allen bolts on top of carbs and look in to see the needles are in place and all is well.

had a similar problem with some flatsides i was trying out, cleaned carbs a lot and no difference, backfiring when revving.pulled needle and seat again and blew compressed air threw the fuel inlets.boom some crap flew out and all well.float bowls were always full when i pulled em but it solved it

I replaced the Stator with a Kimpex stator .....maybe should have bought an OEM Yamaha!

i have a 97 sx 700 that was doing pretty much the same . the stator was the problem. Someone also posted that they changed their stator to a kimpex and the problem carried on the same until they went out and changed it for an oem stator and the problem was solved. Not saying that is your problem ,but worth trying .

Just a thought. Check your TORS. My mother inlaws sled did the same thing. Had to adjust that TORS to get it running right. Also if you have electric start check your battery. I know it sounds weird but a weak battey will do some funny things. Hope this helps.

I have checked and cleaned the TORS and it is presently by-passed by dis-connection from the carbs and yes, re-connecting the wires running back to the harness to each other... the ones to the carbs do not have to be connected but are anyway. I do have electric start but never thought that the battery would have any effect on the ignition because it is for the electric start......isn't it???

yamaha's with electric start are funny like that. If some one wanted to chime in on this but my mother inlaws ran crappy until they put a new battey in. I think it has something with the wiring with the electric start it needs a good charged battery for it.

Also when we pick the sled up the guy before had the TORS buy passed and it ran like crap. We thought it was the carbs but after looking the sled over we found the TORS was unplugged and plugged into each other bye passing it. After my brother inlaw did some research on TY he found how to adjust the TORS and ran good but still had a hicup. Replaced the battery mind you it was good enough to start and run the sled but not good enough for the machine to run right...

There is still a tors switch at the flipper.......bypassing at the carb does away with that one but the other?I dont know....... but put some slack in the cable so there is a 1/4 inch play in the opening after the throttle flipper has started to rotate and you will know for shure. You could start unpluging the lights and grip warmers and try it as well for a stator check.
