97 SX 700 Motor Noise Normal or not

This is my first tripple i have had and or even really listened to, i just got it last year and haven't even got a chance to ride it other than on the trailer.

Compression was all good and my attempt at spraying wd-40 on the crank seal yielding no noise change that i noticed.

It seems to only do it around 3500 rpm (guess as the hood was to far away to see actual). It not when i first blip the throttle and doesn't seem to do it higher rpm from what i can tell.

There is some clutch noise on there but seems like some motor noise too.

At the same rate, i pulled it over without plugs and many time (20-30) with them for it to start (i drained all the gas and just put some new gas in her) and it didn't sound weird pulling over, which i would think if it was a rod or bearing it would. I am use to the twins it may just be a different sound.
 
I had a 97 sx 700 with a bad rod bearing (center cylinder) and at first I thought it was the clutch to so I pulled the clutch and ran it I could not hear any knock at all then but in the end I had to put a crank in it. Do yourself a favor and pull the top end off and if there is any play at all up and down on the rods tear it the rest of the way down and get your credit card out.
 
Thats what i was fearing but figured i should check before I pull her down and see what i find. figured worst case its a gasket set and rings while i am in there. she only has like 4000 miles but the previous owner was a 18-20yr old kid so you never know what happened there.
 
2 coats of permatex copper gasket spray on the base and head gaskets and put together tacky no need to buy new ones it works great on that motor.
 
Think i will pull the clutch this weekend if we don't go up riding with the other sleds. Start her up and see what she sounds like, most of the noise is the clutch i think the phone makes it sounds a little worst then it is, sounds like my XT for the most part (the clutch that is). If she still sounds weird off comes her top :) better safe than sorry don't want to come back and tell you guys i need some cylinders and a crank after it goes boom :)

Just bought a -99 xtc 700 with exactly the same metallic "clunk" sound. I wonder if you have had the time to pull the clutch yet? Really hopes that its the clutch weights.

Haven't pulled the clutch yet need to get ahold of a puller. Seems like its the center cylinder leaning towards tear down but really wanna pull the clutch first in case its vibrating through.
 
pull clutch bolt out wrap threads with teflon pipe tape dont b shy with it . then turn machine on side fill the bolt hole with water then put in bolt the hydralic pressure will build up and the clutch will pop off if it dont work put more tape on bolt and try again
 
That would not work the clutch bolt bolts into the crank and has a sleeve near the threads in the clutch (for the puller). That does however work when they won't come out with a puller.

That would work if you used a short bolt with threads that match the outer threads... (same threads a clutch puller would use) then let the sled sit overnight and the water will freeze popping the clutch off. I have seen it work.
