Older sleds that can still compete in races

I was reading a post over on HCS where a guy was asking which sled would U

buy if you wanted to get into racing cheap and still be able to compete.

The four sleds that were mentioned: 97 Mach Z, 03 F7, Thundercat, and the

SRX 700. Sorry Polaris. So it got me thinking, there is a really nice up and

coming drag strip in Lyndon which is only a few miles away. Maybe instead of

sitting around waiting for snow to trail ride I should sell my sled and buy a

different SRX to set up to drag race only. If I troll craigslist I can find an 00 or

01 SRX for around $1500. Would these sleds still compete in the stock 700

class or do you think I would get smoked by the newer generation sleds?
 
for sanctioned professional racing the the srx is NOT going to cut the mustard, too heavy and the weight break the f7 gets over it makes it not competitive.

if your talking backyard racing you can still do good on a old yamaha triple and the f7 doesnt have as much edge on it. The f7 gets the weight break and the stealth cheater bolt ons that make it beat the srx, but backyard races where the stuff isnt set up as good and weight rules, etc. enforced you can still do pretty good with a srx. Although a piped viper is even better yet, lighter and more power right off the bat IF you can run aftermarket pipes ,etc in what class you want to play in.
 
I also thought about a piped viper but I assumed this would put me into the 700 imp

class. I am not sure if they are set up with scales, I do know there is some big iron

starting to show up in the mod classed. Landon Benoit is doing the tech. I think I am

going to attend the next race and write down some track times and get a feel for how

fast you need to be. The track is in a cornfield but the owner has a HUGE construction

company and uses his equipment for prep. The track looks to be very flat and pure ice,

it is 660'. Maybe I should pickup a viper and have it lake race ported with pipes and

enter the 700 imp stock class? That sounds more fun.

DONT SAY SORRY TO POLARIS. WHO EVER POSTED THOSE SLEDS IS RIGHT, BUT ALSO WRONG TO LEAVE A XCR 800 OUT. VERY VERY STRONG. LIKE DON POSTED, I RUN A VMAX 4 SO YOU TELL ME ABOUT BACKYARD EVENTS. WE HAVE A 95 800 KNOCKING ON 5.8,s, anything from there era will run. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
Thanks for the info guys, they have another race scheduled for mid Feb I am going to

go and see who is winning the classes and how fast you need to be to compete. I am

assuming if I get times and mph a lot of guys on here can tell me how well the classes

are running.
 
Winning on an F-7 is nothing special. Watching them race is nothing special.

Seen one,,,,,, seen em all. Fast?? yea,, whatever, boring shi++ to see.

I'd rather lose on an underdog then play follow the leader by owning/racing one.

Fatten one up to SRX/Vmax-4 standards and they are not that special. Bring one to the river where long legs and the ability to make a corner means more than getting out the door first and they have nothing to brag about.

If an F7 is Set up properly they fly in a long pull! 2000 ft runs up here had an f7 holding down the record for the last couple years. Now with the track shortened to 1320 they seem to be even more dominant. Been giving thought to taking a run at the class with an SRX but have my hands full right now with 2 classes.
 
The Question That Still Unanswered After The F-7 Came Out In 03. Why The Wide Rage In Performance Between These Sleds. There Either Slow, Good Or Fly. Gee, And Their All Stock. !!!! 3:16 (yammie Tony)
 
I always questioned that myself Tony? After having a chance to tune on one now that my son purchased an 03. It's like any other sled. Set up set up set up! It took us a couple weekends of testing to get his competitive. One big thing is ecu's. The guys with the good ones are definitely going to be faster! Arctic cats race dept has control of who gets what. I can tell you first hand that the really fast f7's have ecu mapping done!
 
EXACTLY DAN, AND THE REAL FAST ONES WITH THAT ECU MAPPING WOULD PROBLEY BLOWUP ON A SATURDAY TRAIL RIDE. THESE SLEDS NEVER EVER SHOULD OF BEEN ALLOWED IN ANY FORM OF '' STOCK '' SNOWMOBILE RACING. BETWEEN THEIR WEIGHT, AND THE HP GAINS, THERE SHOULD OF BEEN A SUPER TWIN CLASS JUST FOR THEM. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I've seen hazards Polaris run it actually went to fast at one race where they protested against him but Polaris tect was there programming it in his trailer between races, but he still was running stock classes from 500 thru 1000 and won them all this was onsted mi 2009
 
At most races in Minnesota, they separate twins from triples from 600-800. I run my 2000 SRX 700 in the stock triple class and a 2000 XCR 800 in stock triple 800 and a 1998 TCAT 1000 in the stock 1000 class. This last weekend at the Dennis Kirk Championship Speed Runs in Rush City, MN, I took third behind two other SRX 700s in stock triple 700. It all depends on how the classes in your area are set-up. I figured out the clutching on gearing on the 1000, but this is only my 3rd race on the SRX and is just so hard to figure out. With a speed track, ice picks, and gutted skid with graphite slides, I ran a 105 plus and they werent even clean runs. I lost to a 111 and 114 mph.

You were hanging off your sled most of the way down though. haha It was great to meet you and hope to see you back soon!
 
Up here our classes are stock, improved stock and open by displacement only. Twins and tripples are stuck together!
