2000 sxr 700. buddy added dry gas and 87..am i in trouble?

my buddy has been using my sxr while riding with me.. the other day he told me he added dry gas to the tank and then topped off the rest of tank with 87... sled ran fine all day and night yesterday.. This was before he told me what he added...of course its 10% ethanol.. should I be worried? could he have hurt motor? any signs to look for for potential motor damage? worried now..... we had some nice runs on the lake last night and it was around zero outside..sled ran great....
 
I would get rid of the gas. The dry gas will now pull all the water/ethanol from the fuel and sit at the bottom of the tank. Check compression.
 
The beauty of the Yamaha 600 + 700 tripple "Red Heads" is that, in stock form, they are forgiving as heck to bad gas and abuse as cooling is good, stock jetting is fairly rich, and compression ratios are relatively low.

I wouldn't worry too much about the fuel thats been run through it already but if you are concerned just syphon out the gas thats in the tank and fill up with known high quality stuff.
 
thanks, feel better. im gonna try to drain as much out as i can.. its on empty now anyways... but will try to get rest out.. now here is as dumb question as can be... i have always ran e10 89 gas over the years, no problem... one station up here now has 90 or 91(i forget) that is ethanol free but is over $5.00 per gallon.. can i fill tank with half of the non eth and half of the e10-89? will mixing gas like that hurt anything???
 
All our gas in Michigan has ethanol and I don't have any problems with my SX during the riding season. I just have to make sure and clean the carbs every year before riding. If I were you I would just fill it up with good gas and run it through it will be fine.

Get some star*tron at tractor supply or parts store for reassurance.

I have 91 e free pump at the station 2 miles from my house. Cost is usually the same as ethanol premium. Heres why I DONT run the E-free. I actually baby sat the pump for a while, I worked at a gas station back in the day and am familar with the pump "odometer" so to speak. The pump was hardly ever used, Less than a 100 gallons a month. Leading me to beleive even though E free I suspect to be stale. I choose to run fresh premium with ethanol.

Lots of ethanol free in Michigan. I don't know what dry-gas is, but if it's alcohol like Heet, you should only ever use the isopropyl (Iso-Heet, red bottle) in a 2-stroke. And if you use gas with ethanol in it, why bother adding another 12oz of alcohol anyway? You've already got a gallon of it in a 10 gallon tank.

Actually, just the opposite. The added isopropyl (typical "dry-gas") will help suspend any water but as another post suggested, you've already got a gallon of ethanol in a ten gallon tank of E10 so dry gas is a waste.

IMO - If the tank is near empty, add some fresh fuel and ride.

When sledding I gas up at every stop even if its a gallon. I have added iso heet once last year when I thouht I got bad gas at a stop. Later by buddys poo blew up from said gas possibly? I added some at the start of this riding season too. just incase. Seemed pretty moist stored in enclosed trailer. So it,s a waste of money? my bad. Most all mi gas has e in it. It does say from the makers of sta-bil and 104. both good?

those engine s will run on iced tea the compression is so low in them stock. I would just add some 91-93 and call it a day so you can sleep

Keep in mind dry gas (iso heet) hit the shelves LONG before ethanol hit the pumps. Red stabil IMO is a waste of $, out dated and is useless when factoring the ethanol into it. Green stabil = good stuff!

If you can, try and run only the NON Eth gas but like was said above, make sure there is some turnover in the tank. Our local gas station has non eth that is used alot with snowmobiles and watercraft.

But if you have easy access to ethanol free - as many of us do - those are still the products to use. At our camp we have a generator (Yamaha of course) lawn mower, brush cutter, 2 chainsaws and an atv. Use nothing but ethanol free in all so still need the red stabil when we're away for a long time.

That's funny cuz here in the U.P., we're often thought of in the same light as Canada since there are so few people in such a large area. But by the website I linked earlier, which probably doesn't have all the ethanol free listed, there are 33 stations around the U.P. with ethanol free gas. And if you're close to the WI border, there are even more available.

If we need to gas up where there isn't ethanol free, we add only enough to get to the next station that does have it.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the ethanol issue...I thought it was that the ethanol allowed the water that would normally sit at the bottom of the tank to mix into the fuel as well as attract it. In doing so, it allowed the the burn to be ultra hot (low octanelean condition) and cause the associated issues (detonation/meltdown).

Water will always form in sled tanks, it's the nature of the beast. It used to be that motors would just tank out and run so terrible you'ld have to drain it out and fill with new.

With ethanol, I was under the impression that, it allowed the water to mix with the fuel and cause the fuel to go "bad" in a short period of time. Hence the "fuel shelf life of 60 days".

Not sayin your wrong, just checkin to see if I am?
