s10mike said:a viper pipe will NOT fit on a redhead. I once was told the same thing and in my haste bought all the pieces to switch it over only to find that nothing is the same. wont fit. although that would be nice cause that shiny viper pipe sure looks nice. not sayin that it cant be done, but not with out some cutting and welding.
I am sure he did being he runs it in a dial in class for speed runs. Alot of custom stuff going on there.

From a boondocking perspective the redhead in my mountain max is always up to the task. That 3rd cylinder adds torque that the 2 cylinder guys I ride with dont have. Seeing as we're normally in the bottom of the clutch ratio or spinning the track while climbing a hill I always feel like there's plenty more on tap. I very rarely have to hold it to the bars, mostly when cresting a hill and needing that last little kick. I'll have to see if things stay the same after I stretch it to a 151" this summer, but the new track is lighter than the Yokohama anchor, so I should be gaining flotation with no noticeable increase in the rotating mass.

Back in Spring 2001 we had one of the Yamaha 2002 Viper Demos for a day and we ran it head to head with our 1999 600 and 700 SXs...weather conditions were warm with soft trails. Sleds were run 1000 feet, all on same stretch within minutes of each other...pictures and radar don't lie. Sorry about quality...had to take pictures of old style prints.

When the pics were taken[spring 2001]the 99s were both setup the same:
-drilled silencer
-air box mods
-carbon tech reeds in stock cages
-reed spacers
-one layer removed from head gasket
-thunder shift adjustable weights
-Yamaha 47 helix with green spring @ 60
-1" predator track...Viper had stock shorter lug theoretically faster track
-adjustable transfer rods
These 99s were a lot of fun and relatively easy to wake up.
I started by tuning the 600 until it beat the 700...then I would apply all the improvements to the 700.
In my area, I had great success in the "stock" class snow drags with these two sleds...Ha Ha...until the tech guys figured out some of my changes...then I added pipes and more improvements and cleaned up in the Improved stock classes.

My 97 vmax 700sx has been great so far with 5000 miles on it, only major problem I've had was the stator going bad just last week. I have a question....I've heard that the 97 700 triples had a problem with the mag side crank bearings going bad, has anyone ever heard of this?? Whats the highest mileage 97 redhead you have seen that has never been rebuilt?

I installed and still run Bender tripples on both the SXs along with trail porting.

So whats a good track to run on the sx700's? I still have the original track with a ton of missing lugs and it sucks!!

Depends how and what style of riding you do. The Predator is great track and I really like the new Ripsaw II.

could of used your SX's today BOB.Took my 600 out in all the snow we have and nearly got stuck a dozen times.Got down to the River but wow almost didn't make her back up,damn loose snow.I needed a long track with more ponies..then hit the Bush..man I was into 3 feet and nearly stalled the 600 in the stuff..had it fully pinned and making a turn nearly sunk it down deep..but eventually got out of there fast..crazy fresh snow is difficult to ride in,my gas mileage was the sh*tz today..lolsideshowBob said:I installed and still run Bender tripples on both the SXs along with trail porting.

I looked at the new Ripsaw II,wander how it will hold up..is it a single ply, can't remember.I find the original ripsaws to be garbage and tear lugs to easily/So don't know if the II will be any better.I love my Kimpex 1 "..tougher then steel. Two seasons and still looks like day one with it..amazing track.journeyman said:Depends how and what style of riding you do.
