2001 sxr no spark problem

A buddy pulled his sled out of storage and now has no spark. I've checked all switches, pulled mag off and cleaned rust off it. I was testing the pickup coil and it's weird when I first touch the wires it reads then goes blank. Tested while pulling and it's giving some voltage out of pickup coil. Don't have any specs for testing stator or procedure for doing it. I'm out of ideas here. I have another sxr to try swapping parts with. I also checked wires under engine and found green/black wire worn through but I think that wire is just for lights on dash.
 
try disconnecting the load control relay. its over there on the clutch side mounted to a bracket at the steering hoop just above where your foot goes. should be the relay with the white plug and 4 wires. see what happens.
 
So on the one with no spark I turned the meter up to 2M and now it reads something. The one that runs was at 20 K and read it. What do you guys think? Should I have him order stator and p/u coil?
 
I guess i'll just order a new stator then. It makes sense. 2 identical sleds right next to each other, one runs and the other doesn't. Tested the pick up coils. One reads 190 at 20K and the other reads like 1.350 at 2M. It won't read anything at 20K. Obviously you can tell which one is the non running one. Does this make sense?

How many miles on the one that's failing? Have you been underneath the fly wheel to see if something let loose to see if something was smashed under there?
 
It's all tore down now. It was rusty but nothing bad. Just on the outside of the flywheel. Just don't like the meter readings. Miles not sure. I know he hasn't used it in the last few years. He started it before he put it away. He's going to try find a used one for now. Then I think he's going to sell both them and go 4 stroke. Thank God.

you wouldnt change the scale between the 2 sleds on the meter, if it reads good output on the good one, it should be the same on the dead sled for the pick up coil.

the pick up coil is common to go bad, rest of stator will be good 9 out of 10 times but you cant buy just the pick up coil from yamaha.

stay clear of the aftermarket/rewound stators, they dont work...... only geniune yamaha unless you want to do the job over a couple times.
 
He's checking Al's for used stuff. That's what thought also on the meter readings. For it to go during storage though. That's what blows us away.
 
I have my wifes 01 SXR here with no spark. Pulled it out of storage a couple weeks ago, fired it up in a few pulls, and it ran like normal, which has always been good. I go to fire it up today to clean the carbs, and maintenance, and I have no spark???? I see no abnormal looking wires, tried bypassing the key, and kill switches....nothing....
 
Ya, that was the first thing I looked for. The wiring looks fine. Looked for rub throughs too. Checked the tors, kill, and throttle switches, and theyre good too. Pulled the key switch, and jumped the 2 wires, and still no spark. Ohmed the pick up coil and it checks out good as well. All I need is the stator check procedure, and ohm values for that sled, and I can check the stator
 
That's exactly what happened to buddies sled. Changed stator and P.U. coil and started right up. Also there is a relay you can pull on left side of sled that will bypass all safety devices. It has 2 there. I believe it's the one with blue plug on it. Unplug that and try to start it.
