I am celebrating my 100th post on TY by buying myself a srx 700!! Picked it up yesterday and parked it next to my 96 800. When I lifted the hood I noticed the engine was missing a cylinder(only 3). Is that little motor have enough power to move the sled.?
 
This is actually a srx 700 I posted it in wrong category.Anyway, anything I should know or look out for on this sled. I did notice the part number on the chain case side head is different than the other two? Why.? I'm going to leave this baby stock and use it as my trail sled. The first thing I am doing is cleaning the carbs. I have not dealt with power valves yet, do these require maintenance.? There is a little oil spraying out of one on to the exhaust.
 
yes they do need maintenance. Cleaned every year and adjusted. Could have a bad O ring leaking down onto the exhaust. I got mine a year ago and don't know what I would do with out it. Great on trails and not bad on gas. At least mine is not. No motor mods just clutching and a bender can. love the sound. Oh yeah forgot about the lights. Looks like a blue UFO at night.lol

A better question is why is why does your '96 800 have only 2 pipes and your SRX have 3? They're both awesome sleds with their own distinct personalities.

Counter-rotation of the earth has resulted from lining up both sleds in a race :)

Congrats on your 100th post and owning two of Yamaha's best 2 stroke sleds!

All 3 heads should have the same part number. 98-99 heads are one part number, and 00-02 heads are another. Cylinders are the same way. You may have a mix of parts on the engine from past damage/rebuild, you may want to check the cylinder # also to see if it corresponds to the same year as the head. I've seen this before, a 2001 SRX was blown in one hole and rebuilt with 2 correct cyls/heads, but the reconditioned cyl & replacement head were for 98/99.

Any chance your one different head is the one spraying oil? May want to make double sure the engine is sound otherwise and running ok with good compression/leakdown. Also the one carb could be flooding the cylinder and causing wetness at the exhaust, carbs may need to be cleaned and adjusted.
 
Ya keep it stock! It has plenty of ponies to outrun the bigdogs on a nicely groomed trail...you will love the way it handles if you have ohlins front shocks!!!
 
Congrats on your purchase, these are great sleds.

As for cleaning the valves, if you want you can do it every year but if you use good oil (Yamalube), I go by mileage, I clean and inspect every 3000-4000 miles. I once went 6000 miles between cleaning and still couldn't believe it, minimal build up. I've used nothing but Yamalube since this sled was new. And this year I should be breaking the 15000 mile barrier on the original, untouched motor.

The left two heads sat 8dn00 0G1. The chaincase head says 8dn00 0G2. I know for a fact it is not the original motor. I did a compression check and it was 125 on all three. I will be cleaning the carbs for sure first thing. It's backfiring. Got a good deal on it hopefully!

Is there a way to tell what year the engine is? The original owner had a new engine installed. The chassis is a 98. Also, what is the stock jetting for carbs?(is it the same for all years?)

I cant think of anything at a glance you can tell what year the cases are. I know cranks are inter-changeable. The 00+ cases have a different mounting location for the pick up coil due to the hotter ignition system. Is it still a single bulb head light? 98 has the PV motor mounted behind the carbs, 99+ its on the left hand side by the cowling.
 
Pv are mounted to airbox. The chassis is a 98 600. The engine is a 700 dropped in about 5 years later by the original motor. He told me it was a 2003 but they werent made then. Trying to determine what year the motor is if that is possible. Would ignition system from 600 work with the 700?
 
You're going to need to do some serious investigating here to find out exactly what you got. I'd look at the number stamped into the side of the case under the recoil, the numbers on the cyls, and the number on the cdi. post everything here and guys can help you decipher what you got. I know guys sometimes use the 600 cdi's on 700's for drag racing but i'm not sure how well it would work if you're going to trail ride it. Once you post what you have the guru's can give you better advice.
 
What about carb jetting? . Does jetting vary by year? I know stock jetting varies year to year on vmax4's.
