So im new to this site and new to sledding. I just got my first sled, and that is a 1997 yamaha mm600 twin. Anyways i was out riding today and was at it for 4 or so hours and when i came back home for the day the sled started acting up. when i rolled in to park it the sled wouldnt stop driving, it wouldnt go into neutral and it eventually stalled when i put brake on to stop. so i tried starting it and it was still engaged in drive. the only way i could get it to be in neutral was if i pulled on the belt to spread the plates to loosen the belt up then it would start and idle. then id drive and it wouldnt go back into neutral. so its apparent theres a drive/clutch problem. when i got looking the primary clutch/clutch mounted to the crank came apart. there are 3 or 4 pieces that broke apart. they are alluminum and have 2 pieces of wear material on each side. i want to say there guides to keep the outer pulley half inline but not sure. the outer pulley half also is missing a chunk of aluminum.

So my questions are:

1) Do i need a whole new clutch with that much damage?
2) are there better aftermarket clutches to get?
3)how much is a clutch going to run me?
4) when i was riding my clutch was engaging at 2500rm, is that right?
5) it would only rev up to 6000 and do about 90km/h, does that seem right for a mm600 twin?
6) if i get a new clutch will it need to be tuned?

Sorry for all the questions but i hope someone can help me out. any help will be appreciated thanks. just want to get back to riding.

Sounds like your spider is cracked. If your sheaves are still in good shape you can get a new spider but it might be easier just to buy a used clutch. A used clutch would run you $200 - $250

Thanks for the reply. the spider blew apart pretty well. and the outer/sliding sheave has a chunk missing so ill change it or else it will keep breaking probably.

are there better clutches to get for this sled? are they worth it?

When you go to pull the clutch before you thread the puller in put about 5 or more pumps of grease from your grease gun in the hole. When you tighten the puller pressure builds up helping to pop it off easier.
Put alittle never seize on threads of puller, Tighten the puller, and give the end of the puller a good wrap with a hammer.

So i called the dealer today and they want $1300 for the whole clutch. so im going o the used route and am going to have a friend help put a tune up/rebuild kit in as im sure itll be alot cheaper that way.

What snowmobile clutches will work on the mm600 twin? Seeing im going used with a rebuild in it. the mm600 must be able to fit another clutch on it. im going to try and get a 600 original but if they dont have a mm600 clutch then atleast ill have more options. thanks

So what are some sleds that have those clutches on them? Dont different sleds have different crank sizes and diffrent sheave angles? Yes or no? Sorry for the noob questions, just new to this and just want to get riding again thx

From 1997 and up vmax, sx, sxr, srx, viper, mm, venture.
I think the only difference on some of them is the spring cover, But you can always use the cover off your clutch if it's still good. Also some clutches have set screws for the roller and weight pins and some don't, not sure why or if it matteres
And I think the proaction phazers had a different clutch altogether, not 100% sure though

How are the rollers, weights and spring on your clutch?

As stated before technically any clutch from i think from 1992 and up will fit except the v max 4. Even the new four strokes use the same basic primary (that one is i think). I would stick to any proaction sled 97-06. Even the phazer is the same. The only difference is the covers, weights, rollers and spring. So you never stated is your cover, weights, rollers and spring in good shape?? If so you can find clutches for sale all over the classifieds here and put your stuff on it. If you need a new cover yours is a short cover with a ypy spring. It uses 8cr weights, not sure on rivets, and 15.6mm rollers stock. The only difference between a short cover and a tall cover is about a inch and you cant interchange them. Not sure how to tell but i remember somthing about the way the colors were on the spring. Lengthwise long cover, on same spring coil short?? Do a search here now that its up and working and you can read a ton of info about this. Turk who was the clutch god (RIP) went over this a hundred times in different post. I think your overthinking this one a tad. Get a used clutch put your parts on it and ride!!!! The snows comming!!!!

Okay thanks!! That will give me a better range to look at.

my rollers dont really roll that well except for 1, spring looks good with a little wear, cover is undamaged from what i can see. weights are on the end of the spider? If so there worn.

Whats the deal with cam arms they get changed over then to?
And im just looking for a cost effivent way to get back in the snow as its here already!! thanks again!

So i picked up a used clutch tonight and im going to get it in, in the morning. im going to run it as is atm and see how it goes for engagement + top rpm. what #'s should i target for engagement and max rev? Thx
