you must of had so much blow back into the air box...
no idea.My air box is all sealed on the bottom. Not much oil in there at the end of a season,so any blowby is minimal.

my SRX took 30 pulls today to start. This is with carbs full because I closed the shut off to the tank last time it was running.Choke adjusted right on and did the choke mod..anyways sure felt good to ride it a tad around the property.Ran it along a grassy stretch..she pulled like mad with them studs back on..it felt great..doesn't look like rideable snow for a long time..
Perhaps I'm missing something. I assume you added a fuel shut off between the tank and pump and you say you shut it off while it was running the last time. This would suggest you were draining the bowls before you shut it off.
The only way fuel can drain back to the pump/tank from the float bowls is if your floats aren't floating AND your vents are plugged. Otherwise, the only way for fuel to leave the bowl is through the main/pilot or through the vent via evaporation.
If the sled sits for more than a couple weeks during the season (allowing the light ends of the fuel in the bowls to evaporate) it may take an added pull or three but shouldn't take more provided all is adjusted poroperly.
If you're tugging 30 times with the bowls full of fresh fuel something isn't right.
UPDATE
My ebay replacement reed cages came today. Put them in, pulled the plugs out and gave the rope a few tugs(didnt have to pull the plugs, but it made it a lot easier!)....we got fuel coming out of the lines...check. Put the carbs on, hook them up and give the rope a few tugs to fill the carbs. Put the plugs in, give it full choke...4 pulls and shes alive! Sooooo relieved! Shut it off immediately because the sled is in the basement. Finish installing the air box. Make a few other checks, adjust the track. 5 gallons of fresh fuel, top off the oil tank, top off the coolant. Wrestle it outside. Half a pull and she is lit again!
Guys, I am no expert on these sleds by any means...I actually just got into them last year, I have learned a ton so far and have a LOT more to learn yet. When I started searching on here for explanations for this problem there were a lot of guys saying things like fuel pump or its just the nature of the beast, etc...but none of it added up. If your carb bowls are full then it should fire with just a few pulls or something is wrong. Fuel shut offs aren't going to do anything either, there is now way for the fuel to siphon out of the bowl back into the supply lines.
From what I've read it sounds like reeds are good for 2000 or so miles (of course there are a lot of variables in this). Will a sled run with worn out reeds....yes. Look at the pictures of my reeds...there were 3 badly chipped pedals on mine and the sled still ran damn good....I had it well over 100mph on these reeds. Basically what I am saying is if you are pulling and pulling on your sled and it won't fire, something is wrong...don't accept the "nature of the beast" theory....your sled didn't come from the factory that way, don't overlook anything...take the time and find the problem.

still nature of the Beast.Everything is up to snuff and adjusted, reeds changed last season.plug caps, pump, plugs.floats adjusted, choke adjusted, choke mod..etc.
But yet I do the same maintenance to my SXR 600 and it will start 1 to 2 pulls usually..
I only shut off the fuel and empty carbs as I am fogging in the Spring. When it is cold out,it will take more pulls..in the garage at 40 degrees or so the SRX will start much quicker..doesn't bother me as I am used to it now..

good job and nice post! ride safe!

Have you checked your throttle slide opening? Maybe you have too much air getting through the carbs at start up?
Also, when you adjust your floats, did you do so with the carbs upside down or at a 45....it does make a difference. I believe there is a spring in the needle, if you adjust with carbs vertical you will deflect that spring and get a false reading. If you turn the carb on a 45 it takes enough weight off the spring to get an accurate reading. Adjusting with the carb vertical would make the float shut prematurely.
Just because a sled runs good doesn't mean everything is right with it. Start up is the most finicky part of an engine.
Don't take this the wrong way, just throwing it out there... Are you strong enough to pull the sled over fast enough when its cold? I know my girlfriend could never get one started unless it was already warmed up. You could pick up a cheap magnetic block heater and prop it up against the block. If you own a diesel truck, you know how much difference a warm block makes....its a night and day difference.

it is the nature of the beasts, your not the first guy to post hard starting srx posts. you have to understand, without the sled in front of ya, its a guessing came. you found the problem. 3:16 (yammie tony)
BTW...went out this morning to see how she would do after sitting in the cold. 25 degrees and she farted on the 3rd, fired on the 4th. This is with new rings/pistons that haven't seated yet.
Glad to hear you found the problem. These sleds should be running in 3 to 5 pulls cold, depending on the cold part. Blue is a freak who rides in -30' F so it might take him a couple more lol.
One night it dipped down to -32 Celsius. Windchill was about -45 Celsius. My 2000 SRX with 8,500 miles took 6 pulls that morning. I left it outside. That is the most pulls yet.
Anything after 6 pulls and something is wrong with my sled. Period.

I don't ride in -30F any more and SRX_700..I am happy for you..by the way we got 4 inch's of snow last night, another 4 coming tomorrow on top of the 2 to 3 we had ..so it is riding time this weekend..ditch banging here I go..

i was talking about the guy with the broken reed petals, imagine how much A/f mix would be coming back out the carb throats with half a reed!

my other question is, where did the other piece of the reed end up?!?! lucky these engines don't run metal reed petals ones like some boats, what a mess they make!

I don't ride in those temps. Just park it over night when it can dip below -30 Celsius. Usually 3 - 5 pulls when the temps drop that much. Like I said, after 6 pulls means there could be issues.
