fresh out of storage exhaust joint leak..

Yep, forgot about the steel wool in the tailpipe now it has a noticeable blue smoke leak at the first joint down from manifold..I only ran it for a couple minutes....was perfect last year..will this seal back up? if I buy a $28 gasket can I get the springs off with a auto brake spring tool?

any cheap shortcuts?

i hear of some people using copper gasket maker or something on them. i just grip the springs with some pliers and pull, works for me!

needle nose vise grips work great on exhaust springs if you dont have the hook tool.
 
I use a pair of MIG pliers but I like the sound of the needle nose vise grips! I've had many a blood blister from various types of pliers slipping on exhaust springs. I made a spring tool like the one in the catalog's but I never use it. :dunno:
 
I just bought 6 gaskets from mfgsupply for 6.99 each. This is the cheapest I could find by far. Good idea on the copper gasket sealant though.

these Yamaha online dealers get $28 + freight ... I'm trying the old one cleaned then gooped-up with the copper RTV.
 
i have never done this, just herd about it. do you goop it up and let it dry then install it? or do you goop it up and install it and let it dry?
 
I've not done one yet but imagin you clean it up, goop it up and put it together to set overnite.
 
I'd want enough to get a good seal and any excess probably could be cleaned off the outside real nice with mineral spirits.
 
Are you guys saying the factory donut gaskets don't seal well? I love my spring tool, it's the best tool I've ever purchased for around $5.
 
Sometimes the factory gaskets don't seal well. When had a stock exhaust, after cleaning the gasket, put a nice even layer on the gasket put it back together and let it set up overnight. I use a pair of needle nose pliers for the springs. Once in a pinch I used a screwdriver, but then the spring let go and poked right through the side of my finger...:whine:

ouch..I can see that..I was pulling a spring off with pliers and it slipped off the spring and my hand nailed something and cut me right open..pissed me off.I use the spring hook and the odd time needle nose visegrips which I can lock on to the clamp.
 
it says 24 hour set up at room temp, and in colder weather longer (not how long tho). so it should be okay. i just stuck a space heater under my hood when i did it an left it over night
