After tearing the motor apart, and thinking for a while. I'm pretty sure that's what I'm going to do. I have a lot of time in going over my 98, and I know what I'm dealing with. I cold seized a piston in it last year. Otherwise, it's strong. It is jetted on the edge, so I think I will swap to the larger jets from the 99, and use it's skid and track, and the hood. I just got 3 new SPI pistons, so I will put them in my 98 and save the good used pistons. I know they're not OEM, but I know now to always let her properly warm up before ripping on it.
When I signed up for this site, I knew VERY little about sleds. I have learned so much from searching, and reading. Along with all the help from you guys and many others. This was my first engine removal and tear down, and I learned even more. With TY, good tools, and the SRX repair manual, anything is possible. I bought mine on eBay, printed it out, and have it in a 3 ring binder. Comes in handy all the time.
Hopefully this storm system coming after New Years pans out and with any luck I'll be riding the first week of 2014!

Question.....
Can bad/cracked reed petals cause a lean condition and burndown? Never checked the reeds on my 98 until today, and they are not good. Chips and cracks in multiple spots.

not really, they will make it run rich and throttle response not as good because they dont seal up to the cage. put a new set of yamaha reeds back in they last a long time.
